103 TECHNICAL TECHNICAL BASIC TYPES OF LIGHTING A good lighting design ideally needs to combine the three basic types of lighting in order to light an area in accordance to function and style. Ambient lighting: it is also known as general lighting and it provides an area with overall illumination. It produces a comfortable level of brightness without glare which allows you to see and walk around safely. In some spaces such as laundry rooms, the ambient lighting also serves as the primary source of task lighting. It can be accomplished with pendants, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, recessed or track lights and with lanterns mounted on the outside of the home. Having a central source of ambient light in all rooms is fundamental to a good lighting design scheme. Task lighting: helps people perform specific tasks, such as reading, preparing and cooking food, and playing games. It can be provided by recessed and track lighting, pendant lighting and under cabinet lighting, as well as by portable floor and desk lamps. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows and should be bright enough to prevent eye strain. Accent lighting: adds drama to a room by creating visual interest. As part of a lighting design scheme, it is used to draw the eye to focus items such as house plants, paintings and sculptures. It can also be used to highlight the texture of a wall, window treatments or outdoor landscaping. To be effective, accent lighting requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting surrounding it. Accent lighting is usually provided by recessed and track lighting or wall-mounted fittings. COLOUR TEMPERATURE GUIDE Colour temperature is a term used to describe the colour characteristics of light, usually either warm (yellowish) or cool (bluish). It is measured in degrees of Kelvin (K). The colour temperature of a light bulb is assigned using the basis of correlated colour temperature (CCT). For example, if a metal object is heated, it then appears to glow. Depending on the Kelvin temperature that the metal object is being heated at, the glow will be various colours, such as orange, yellow or blue. The colour temperature of light bulbs is meant to replicate the Kelvin temperature of the metal object. Typically, commercial and residential lighting application Kelvin temperatures fall somewhere on a scale from 2000K (warm) to 6500K (cool). The following table provides a brief guide on the various colour temperatures and their suggested applications. No extra control cable is required. This dimming method works well with conventional wiring. Mains dimming is suggested when someone wants to dim LED fittings and the cable infrastructure is wired conventionally. 0-10V/1-10V This protocol can dim dedicated fittings very well and is usually used with LED luminaires. A voltage between 0V and 10V is applied to the LED driver (separate to the mains voltage) which then relates this to a specific light output level. 0V will either give no light output or the lowest level, 10V will give the highest output and the other voltages will give brightness levels in-between. is typically smoother and goes lower than with mains dimming. This type of dimming can be used with a 0-10V driver and A 0-10V rotary dimmer A 0-10V lighting control system module. 0-10V/1-10V requires a separate control cable to be run from the controller to the fittings driver. If someone is rewiring or starting from scratch and doesn t need colour change control, 0-10V may be the ideal dimming method. DALI This method is again widely used with LED luminaires and is preferred with professionally designed lighting control systems. This is a more complex system where each luminaire is given an address, so they can all be controlled independently or as a group. The use of a DALI control unit is required with some specialised software which is then used to control each luminaire. This method allows user to set brightness levels, switch units on or off and set different scenes. DALI is more commonly found in commercial environments and can offer superior dimming, flexibility and cost-effectiveness. It is very flexible in its deployment and use and can simplify wiring infrastructure. As with the 0-10V system it requires a control cable to the DALI driver. R2 This is a simple and innovative dimming function developed by RICOMAN and currently coming as standard in RICOMAN s R2 Fire Rated Downlight. The key features are the three pre set levels of dimming (100%-50%-10%) and the fact that it functions with any standard on/off switch, so no dimmer switch is required. If user flicks the on/off switch once, 100% light output is achieved. Then, flicking the switch off and back on within 2 seconds the light output decreases to 50%; to drop down to 10% simply flick the light switch off and on again within 2 seconds. The main advantages of this method are the simplicity, the energy savings and the lack of compatibility issues. 204 RICOMAN ISSUE RICOMAN ISSUE 1.2

104 TECHNICAL TECHNICAL IP RATING AND BATHROOM ZONES IP Rating indicates the resistance offered by the fixture to the penetration of solids and liquids. This is a twodigit number, the first digit indicating the degree of protection against the ingress of solids and the second the protection against liquids. For example, IP65 indicates total protection against dust and protection against low pressure jets of water. This area requires a minimum of IPX7 and only SELV (safety extra low voltage, max 12v AC) equipment may be used in this zone. Zone 1 This is the area directly above a bath and within a shower cubicle, practically the area directly above Zone 0 to a height of 2.25m above finished floor level or the top of the highest fixed water outlet, whichever is higher. This zone requires a minimum of IPX4. If there is a possibility of water sprays, an IPX5 is required. 17th edition IEC regulations allow for the use of certain 240V electrical equipment in zones 1 and 2 if controlled by the appropriate RCD. Zone 2 This is the area outside of the shower zone, more specifically the area 60cm external to zone 1 and to a height of 2.25m above finished floor level or the top of the highest fixed water outlet, whichever is higher. Same as above, this zone requires a minimum of IPX4. If there is a possibility of water sprays, an IPX5 is required. 17th edition IEC regulations allow for the use of certain 240V electrical equipment in zones 1 and 2 if controlled by the appropriate RCD. Zone 3 describes areas outside these zones, but it is no longer used. There is no minimum IP Rating external to zones 0, 1 and 2 which means that normal rules would apply. 6 Total protection from dust 6 Protection against jets of water of similar force to heavy seas 7 Protection against immersion between cm 8 Protection against submersion Before any lighting installations are carried out in bathrooms it is essential to understand the IP Rating and the significance of bathroom zones, as set out in the electrical safety regulations. These bathroom zones are designed to ensure that only lights provided with appropriate protection are used, especially within the higher risk areas so that the risk of electrocution is avoided. A bathroom is split up into three zones. The requirements of each area are mainly dependent upon the risk level of water getting close to or touching the electrical supply. This would cause damage to the installation but more importantly poses a risk of electric shock. However, when installing bathroom lights, RICOMAN recommends using at least IP44 or above, to ensure a higher resistance to steam. Steam could potentially cause lamp failure which could be costly especially if expensive LEDs have been used. All circuits in a bathroom should be protected by a 30ma RCD (Residual Circuit Device). Although this is now common practice and is a requirement of Part P of the Building Regulations it is worth double checking especially in older buildings. 206 RICOMAN ISSUE RICOMAN ISSUE 1.2

105 TECHNICAL TECHNICAL FIRE REGULATIONS, TP(A) AND TP(B) RATED MATERIALS The Building Regulations Approved Document B2 places restrictions on the use of certain thermoplastic materials when they are used as lighting diffusers and form part of a ceiling. These different classifications are dependent on the material s ability to prevent the spread of flame and they are broken down into TP(a) and TP(b). Definition of TP(a) rated diffuser material: A solid polycarbonate sheet at least 3 mm thick. Multi-layered polycarbonate rigid sheets, having a class 1 rating when tested in accordance with BS Any other rigid thermoplastic product, a sample of which, when tested in accordance with method 508A as defined in BS , extinguishes before the first mark and flaming and afterglow does not exceed five seconds after the source of flame has been removed. Definition of TP(b) rated diffuser material: A solid polycarbonate sheet which is less than 3 mm thick, or multi-layered sheet products that do not qualify as TP(a) by test. Other products which, when tested in accordance with method 508A in BS , has a rate of burning that does not exceed 50 mm per minute. Due to the nature of the material it is highly unlikely that acrylic or polystyrene diffusers will meet the TP(a) test requirements as set out in BS or BS These diffuser types are therefore most likely to be TP(b) rated, or have no rating at all. IK RATING The IK Rating of a fixture indicates the protection against mechanical impact. The application of an IK rating to a luminaire is a performance issue and the higher the number equates to a higher level of protection. 106 GLOSSARY GLOSSARY TECHNICAL GLOSSARY Average rated life: a value given to the light source, typically lamp manufacturers quote a figure in hours at which 50% of lamps are surviving. Beam angle: somewhat misleading angle of light spread, to which the intensity has fallen of to 50% of the peak value. Candela (CD): the SI unit of luminous intensity. The intensity of a light source in a specific direction. Casambi: provides a modern wireless lighting control solution based on Bluetooth Low Energy. Key aspects of the Casambi solution are great user experience, high performance and scalability from basic individual fixture controls to industrial scale solutions with cloud based remote control, monitoring and data logging. CE: European Community conformity mark. This denotes that the item conforms with the requirements of relevant EU Directives. CIBSE: the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers. The Society of Light and Lighting, a division of CIBSE, publishes many Lighting Guides, widely used as references for the choice of luminaire and recommended illuminance level most suitable for a specific area Colour appearance: the impression provided when looking at a light source e.g. warm or cool. Colour rendering: the appearance of surface colours when illuminated by light from a given source. Good colour rendering implies similarity of appearance to that under an acceptable light source, e.g. natural daylight. CRI (Colour Rendering Index): measurement of the degree to which the colours of surfaces illuminated by a given light source conform to the same surfaces under a reference source. CRI is expressed as a number where 100 means that there is no colour shift as under natural light. Typically high pressure sodium lamps would be approx. Ra=25, Metal Halide Lamps Ra=65, Triphosphor Fluorescent Lamps Ra=80+. : the process by which lamps are dimmed from a 100% to a minimum level that is not always zero. DMX: a standard for digital communication networks that are commonly used to control stage lighting and effects. DMX soon became the primary method for linking controllers (such as a lighting console) to dimmers and special effects devices such as fog machines and intelligent lights. DMX has also expanded to uses in non-theatrical interior and architectural lighting, and can now be used to control almost anything, reflecting its popularity in theaters and venues. Efficacy (Lm/W): a metric term used to compare light output to energy consumption. Efficacy is measured in lumens per watt. For example, a 100 Watt source producing 1800 lumens gives 18 lumens per watt. Efficacy is similar to efficiency, but it is expressed in dissimilar units. Efficiency: ratio of power supplied to wattage dissipated. EMC: electromagnetic compatibility. Many Electrical items produce unintentional interference, EMC ensures these levels are within guidelines and should therefore not cause unwanted interference with other equipment. Emergency lighting: lighting provided when the main lighting installation fails enabling safe exit from a building. Flicker: a visible oscillation in the luminous flux/light output. Glare: refers to the difficulty seeing in the presence of bright light such as direct or reflected sunlight or artificial light. Due to this, some luminaires include diffusers or reflectors to provide an anti-glare function. Illuminance: a photometric term that quantifies the light on a surface or plane. It is expressed in lumens per m2 (lux). This can be calculated or measured with a light meter. LED: Light Emitting Diode. Ultra is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when an electric current passes through it. The light is not particularly bright, but in most LEDs it is monochromatic, occurring at a single wavelength. The output from an LED can range from red (at a wavelength of approximately 700 nanometres) to blue-violet (about 400 nanometres). Some LEDs emit infrared (IR) energy (830 nanometres or longer); such a device is known as an infrared-emitting diode (IRED). LED Driver: a device that manages power and controls the current flow for an LED lighting product. LED Life: figures published refer to the L50, L70 or L75 classification system where the number relates to percentage of light output. So, a 30,000hr L70 LED would be expected to have 70% of its rated output at 30,000 hrs. LEDs are subject to very small operating temperature parameters and figures quoted are typically at 25c. Building a LED into a luminaire can result in the operating temperature being outside the design parameters and the lie being adversely affected. LOR: Light Output Ratio. The ration of the total light output of a luminaire under stated conditions to that of the lamp or lamps under reference conditions. The higher the figure, the more efficient the luminaire is. LOR may consist of any ratio of DLOR and/or ULOR. Lumen: standard unit of luminous flux. Describes the quantity of light emitted by a light source or received by a surface. Lux: the metric unit of measure for illuminance of a surface. One lux is equal to one lumen per metresquared. Microwave Sensor: sophisticated presence detector that uses low power Microwave signals which are then reflected by moving persons and measured through the Doppler effect method. Relux: one of the standard lighting design packages and visual presentation tools. RoHS Compliant: Restriction of Hazardous Substances (2002/95/EC) is an article 95 directive, meaning it is consistent across all European Union member states. Since July 1st 2006 the use of hazardous substances is restricted in products, to prevent damage to the environment. The prohibited substances are Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium, Polybrominated Biphenyls and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers. Self-Test Emergency: the self-test circuit utilises an accurate internal clock which is programmed to interrupt the permanent mains supply at set intervals thus initiating emergency lighting tests. The self-test units are supplied pre-programmed to initiate short duration tests once every month, a one third duration test after six months and a full duration test once every 12 months (as recommended in BS5266 and EN50172). Voltage: the electric potential existing between two components in an electrical circuit. Lamps are rated in terms of wattage at a specific voltage. Operating a lamp at another voltage from that which I rated may cause the lamp to burn at less than full intensity or to burn out very quickly. Watt: the unit for measuring electrical power. It defines the rate of energy consumption by an electrical device when it is in operation. WEEE: compliance with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive. This covers the collection, treatment and recycling of equipment at end of life. Zigbee: an IEEE based specification for a suite of high-level communication protocols used to create personal area networks with small, low-power digital radios, such as for home automation, medical device data collection, and other low-power low-bandwidth needs, designed for small scale projects which need wireless connection.
