1 Top 0 Reflects Familiar Patterns As in 0, % of the companies in this year s ranking report growing their fleet sizes, and the percentage of those that reduced their buses continues to drop. This year brings significant growth and movement for some contractors. By Kelly Roher, Managing Editor Not on the list? The trends in SCHOOL BUS FLEET s 0 Top 0 Contractors are similar to last year s. The same percentage of companies that have participated in the past (%) grew their fleets, and the percentage of those that reduced their buses continues to decline (3% in 0 compared to % in 0 and 7% in 00). Thirty-six percent reported no change in fleet size. In addition, this year s ranking is largely unchanged from previous years, but several companies did make large jumps up the list. Apple Bus Co. moved up four spots to No. 0, DATTCO Inc. and Royal Coach Lines each moved up five slots to No. 3 and No., respectively, and Langs Bus Lines Ltd. ascended spots to No. 6. The total number of buses in the Top 0 is 7,93, which is 37 fewer buses than last year. This marks the first time in many years that the total decreased from the previous year. Another change from last year is that acquisitions substantially increased two companies fleets. George Krapf Jr. & Sons Inc. acquired Septran Inc., bringing the company s fleet to,43 buses, up from,33. Top has growth Among the top five companies, National Express acquisition of Petermann Ltd. increased the company s fleet by,9 buses, giving it the largest gain in fleet size by buses. The fleet comprises more than 0,000 units, putting the company at No. under First Student Inc., which has 4,40 buses. Student Transportation Inc., No. 3, continued its growth, gaining,880 buses for a total of 9,00, and Illinois Central School Bus Co., at No., added 6 buses to its fleet, for 3,46 units. Atlantic Express Transportation Corp. is No. 4 with,80 buses. New and returning to the group Two companies joined the Top 0 in 0: Reliant Transportation of New York, N.Y., enters the list at No. 6 with 838 buses. Johnson School Bus Service Inc. of West Bend, Wis., takes the No. 3 spot with 484 buses. This year also saw the return of a company that has previously appeared in the list. Hudson County Transport Inc. of Jersey City, N.J., comes in at No. 49 with 48 buses after narrowly missing the list in 0. Irvin Raphael Inc. of East Brunswick, N.J., is at No. 0 with 47 buses. While the company has not been in the Top 0 in recent years, it almost made the list last year with 3 buses. kelly.roher@bobit.com Each year, we attempt to contact every school bus company that might qualify for the Top 0. However, we realize that there are probably still some large contractors out there that we aren t aware of. If your company or another that you know of isn t on this list but should be, please let us know. Send an to info@schoolbusfleet.com or a fax to (30) 33-. Include contact information and the current number of school buses in the company s fleet. 4 school bus fleet JULY 0
