All of which smart has in abundance, as the vehicles that bear that name first and foremost the smart fortwo have proved time and time again. Designed from the ground up as an ultra-compact car for the city, the smart fortwo electric drive model in this latest and fourth generation of models has now arrived in town as the most authoritative answer to the challenges of modern urban mobility. The new models are full of innovative ideas that in some cases have until now been the preserve of vehicles in much higher classes. Sensors and digital components mean that the new electric drive generation is about far more than simply cars with electric drive systems: they are mobility solutions for the city that offer more fun than ever before without any need for compromise. New ideas for a new mobility: even in the standard-equipment model the ECO mode uses the kinetic energy of the vehicle to charge the high-voltage battery through a process of recuperation as soon as you take your foot off the accelerator. Radar-based recuperation takes things a step further: in this case a radar sensor monitors what s happening on the road ahead and automatically selects the most appropriate recuperation level, so improving ride comfort and ensuring optimum utilisation of the kinetic energy. Or Plug&Charge2: with this innovative charging solution for your smart, you simply plug in at the charging station the relevant vehicle data are transmitted and the charging process started. The consumption details relating to energy flow show you at one-minute intervals how much energy you are consuming or, alternatively, how much you have regenerated through recuperation. Forward, reverse, park, neutral: a smart electric drive is extremely easy to drive one gear is all you need, whatever your speed. The ECO button activates the ECO mode and with it a range of energy-saving functions: maximum recuperation, reduced cooling/heating output, a reduced top speed and a flatter accelerator curve all in the interests of extending the vehicle s range. Charging at home: The wallbox frees you from the need to use a public charging station. The powerful and weatherproof charging station for your garage, carport or parking space charges your electric car quickly and conveniently via the 3-phase charging cable. What s more: the wallbox with its smart logo is an eye-catching feature in its own right. Faster charging with the 22 kw on-board charger. The fastest way to charge your smart is via a combination of charging station or wallbox with the optionally available 22 kw on-board charger with rapid-charging function. The inclusion of the optional readyspace seats makes the rear of the car even more flexible. It is a simple matter to swivel the seat cushions individually to the footwell, so quickly giving you more space for larger or higher items. The cargo box, a removable stowage compartment, provides yet further options for the secure stowage of items. And if you need a level cargo area, simply fold down the seat backrests as well. Charging from a household socket. A charging cable for use in conjunction with a normal household socket is available as an option. The lower current, however, can mean that charging from 0 to 80% can take around 6 hours (may vary from country to country). In most cases, therefore, the other charging options are to be preferred, but it s good to know that, if needs be, you can recharge your car almost anywhere. 12 Intelligent networking Retrieval of vehicle status. This function provides you with an overview of the charge level of the high-voltage battery, current range, energy consumed and trip meter. It also tells you how economically you are driving, whether your tyre pressure is okay and when your next service is due. >> Very well connected. Keep an eye on things wherever your smart happens to be. With smart control you have access at any time via your smartphone, tablet or PC to all the important information about your vehicle. This includes information about its charge level, current range or the expiry time of your parking ticket. Vehicle functions such as the pre-entry climate control can also be remotely controlled. smart control can also show you how efficiently you are driving. 3 years use from date of activation included, individually extendable thereafter. Retrieving and controlling charging functions. This gives you access to all the data you need during the charging process: the remaining charging time, the charging capacity, the range and the charge level at the time of a proposed departure as well as a time-dependent forecast of the charge level. This is also where you go to activate smart charging, for example if you only want to use the cheaper nighttime-rate electricity to charge your car. Controlling vehicle functions. In this section you can start the pre-entry climate control system of your smart whenever you like, so ensuring that the interior is nice and warm by the time you set off. 13 Innovative safety >> Active, passive, innovative. The most intelligent way of ensuring safety is not to let accidents happen in the first place. For example Active Brake Assist, which comes as standard: this radar-based safety system monitors the traffic ahead of you and, if necessary, will automatically trigger emergency braking at speeds of 30 km/h or over, before a collision with a vehicle ahead can happen. A further plus point in terms of safety: all the electrical components of the vehicle are securely housed the high-voltage battery, for example, is particularly well protected within the vehicle floor. Safety is also ensured when it comes to the service life of the high-voltage battery: thanks to the smart battery certificate, the high-voltage battery is indemnified for 8 years or 00,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. 14 Innovative safety tridion safety cell. Active Brake Assist. The core element of the innovative smart safety system is not only responsible for the typical smart two-colour look it also assumes the main role in occupant protection. Just like a nut is protected by its hard shell, the tridion safety cell made of 75% high-strength steel keeps its contents safe from harm. In conjunction with further components such as crash boxes and deformation elements, the tridion safety cell ensures maximum safety in a minimum space. If there is a risk of collision, the Brake Assist system issues alerts to warn the driver. In an emergency, it will intervene actively to brake the vehicle at speeds over 30 km/h, so helping to avoid collisions with traffic on the road ahead. Airbags. Lane Keeping Assist. With seven airbags as standard: as well as airbags for the driver and front passenger, the smart electric drive models come with a kneebag for the driver, two pelvis/thorax bags in the backrests of the driver s and front passenger seats and windowbags, which deploy over the windows on the side of the vehicle affected by the impact. The optional Lane Keeping Assist uses a camera to monitor the road ahead of you and gives an acoustic signal as well as a visual signal in the instrument cluster at speeds over 70 km/h to warn you if you leave your lane. High-voltage battery (HV battery). Crosswind Assist. The positioning of the HV battery in a robust frame set into the vehicle underbody offers the best possible deformation protection in the event of a collision. The battery s low centre of gravity also noticeably improves the handling. As well as the high-voltage supply for the electric drive system, there is a separate on-board electrical supply of the conventional type with a 2 V automotive battery. All connectors in the high-voltage system are touch-safe and are monitored by the system s own 2 V interlock circuit. This ensures that the vehicle occupants do not come into contact with high voltage at any time. And should an accident ever occur, the high-voltage elements are disconnected, depending on the severity of the accident. Particularly on cross-country journeys or on the motorway, sudden gusts of wind can affect the vehicle s handling characteristics. Crosswind Assist, a standard feature, detects deviations from straight-line stability and specifically brakes individual wheels so that you do not have to countersteer as strongly.
