2 SOFT STARTERS FOR ASYNCHRONOUS THREE-PHASE MOTORS TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS - CE Product - Standard three-phase power supply selectionable: 230/400VAC± 10% - 50/60Hz,(240/415Vac or 440/460Vac on request). - Voltage regulation by SCR (power block). The cod. C270R has been designed to work in industrial environments, with CE requirements. When the starting is finished, they fall within the limits of conducted emission on the power line without the use of additional filters. 3 WORKING PRINCIPLE AND FIELD OF USE The drivers of the 270R series are voltage three-phase controlled diode regulators (SCR) and have been designed to operate with an inductive load typical of asynchronous three-phase motors, also with deformed power lines with a maximum distortion of 10%. The voltage regulation is carried out by means of a phase partialisation system which guarantees the motor a regular functioning without vibrations. The voltage at the motor coil is variable from zero to a maximum equal to the power line voltage (end of starting). The use of controlled diodes as the power block guarantees reliability and peak overload margins during starting. The motor soft-start is carried out by means of a current ramp and therefore from zero to the maximum predetermined torque value. The possibility to limit the starting current peak offers some advantages, one of which is the noticeable energetic saving, since a normal direct powered motor starting, with a nominal load, involves a current peak which can exceed six times the nominal value, instead a soft-starter Cod. C270R application allows the starting current to be reduced up to the minimum value necessary avoiding, as a consequence, high power supply peaks and the risk of break downs. The saving is obvious especially when using a large number of starting manoeuvres and many motors are installed. The possibility to create a torque ramp allows you also to protect the machinery applied to the motor (gears - belts etc.) above all when there are large flywheels or fans to be started. Finally the soft-start becomes necessary mainly when particular loads (threads - materials etc.) are used where a jog start would cause breakages. Stopping in deceleration ramp is carried out by decreasing the motor voltage up to prefixed regulated value, and is effective only with non inertial loads. Note: The 4 secs. starting ramp could be unsufficient tofully start a motor; in this case, the boost goes on at the set current value for a maximum of 20 secs over which the emergency switches on (extreme starting time). The 270R series boards may be therefore used to start: pumps - presses - dyeing machines - textile machines - machines powered by electrogenous groups - ventilation systems - conveyor trolleys - conveyor lines - tool making machines etc. MICROSWITCHES DESCRIPTION S1 closed = max current regulation field from 2 to 4 times the nominal current S1 open = max current regulation field from 1 to 2 times the nominal current COMMANDS POWER BOARD DESCRIPTION 1 0V common negative 1-2 ACC/DEC contact connection; close for deceleration - open for acceleration 1-3 START/STOP contact connection; close for run command (START beginning), open for stopping. The opening of the START/STOP command removes voltage to the motor instantly and zeroes the drive functions. NOTE : the minimum time necessary to reset the ramp of the drive is 0,2 secs.,without supply or when the START/ STOP contact is open. RAMP EXTREME RAMP LINE MOTOR PHASE SYNCHRONISM MOTOR NOMINAL CURRENT MAX STARTING CURRENT TRIMMER DESCRIPTION P1 P2 P3 P4 P6 (IN) MOTOR NOMINAL CURRENT: This tuning must be carried out carefully as it determines the maximum reference current value and maximum overload current (+30% IN). (INX) MAXIMUM STARTING CURRENT: regulates the maximum current in the starting; when S1 is closed, the regulation field goes from 2 to 4, that means you can set the starting current from 2 to 4 times the nominal current set by trimmer P1 (IN). When S1 is open, the regulation field goes from 1 to 2 times the nominal current. ACCELERATION RAMP: regulates the rising time from zero to the current set by the trimmer (INX). This setting influences the soft starting phase and the motor acceleration ramp from zero to the max speed. The resulting acceleration time depends anyway from the motor torque level. The regulation field of the trimmer ACC RAMP goes from 0,2 seconds to 8 seconds. All clockwise it raises up the time of the ramp. DECELERATION RAMP: regulates the time of the voltage descent ramp applied to the motor up to maximum 0 Volt. This setting gives a soft stopping to the motor when it is used to run braking loads or irreversible transmissions. The deceleration does not work in case of inertial loads where instead, we need a braking. As like as in the acceleration phase, the descent ramp can be conditioned from the load applied to the motor. The regulation field of the trimmer DEC RAMP goes from 0,2 seconds to 8 seconds. All clockwise it raises up the time of the ramp. STABILITY: regulated in a clockwise direction it softens any oscillation during the starting phase in automatic current control. VISUALISATION DESCRIPTION L0 POWER ON It indicates the presence of the power supply on the board. L1 L2 L3 ACTIVATION ON they indicate the presence of motor voltage. OFF when START/STOP contacts are open or when the deceleration ramp arrives at zero reference. L4 EXTREME STARTING TIME ON indicates a too long starting ramp (over 20secs). In this case, the starting current must be raised up by P2. If activated, to reset, take off and then take on the supply, after a 5 secs pause. L5 DECELERATION ON indicates the closure of the ACC/DEC contact between connectors 1-2 and therefore the consent to the motor deceleration. OFF gives the consent to the starting if the START/STOP contact is present. L6 START/STOP ON indicates the closure of the START/STOP contact between connectors 1-3 and therefore the consent to the motor starting. OFF means that the static zeroing on the drive controls and on the motor voltage is present. L7 END of STARTING On indicates that the motor gets over the maximum starting time (20 secs.). 5

6 APPLICATION DIAGRAMS EXAMPLE Nr. 1 FUSES COMMAND CIRCUIT SUPPLY THREE-PHASE LINE This is a motor starting on both rotational ways with heating relay protection (RT). Each time one switch is excited, there is the starting ramp activation. The reversal of the run by switches can be done quickly (minimum reversal delay 0,2secs.). The result will be a upstream braking with soft reversal. EXAMPLE Nr. 2 ACC/DEC START/STOP FUSES THREE-PHASE LINE COMMAND CIRCUIT SUPPLY This diagram is used when the motor works in one direction with acceleration and deceleration ramps. After powering the board with the START button the starting and stop commands are carried out staticly by the START/STOP and ACC/DEC contacts; by closing the START/STOP contact the motor accelerates until the maximum speed; by closing the ACC/DEC contact, the motor decelerates with the set ramp until it stops. By re-opening the ACC/DEC contact the motor goes into starting; by opening the START/STOP contact, we take out immediately the motor supply. The possibility to command the motor staticly avoids the electric arc between the switching contacts, especially in case of frequent startings. The deceleration ramp works only with braking loads or with irreversible transmissions and is not efficient with inertial loads. 6

7 START UP INSTRUCTIONS 1 Pre-set the 3 voltages in conformity of the main power as follows: Card pre-set for line 230Vac ( on request) Card pre-set for line 400Vac ( on requet) 2 Read the nominal current on the motor label and set the trimmer P1 for the current read. MOTOR START-UP WITH THE MAXIMUM CURRENT CONTROL AND STOP WITH VOLTAGE RAMP Set trimmer P2 at maximum starting current (four times nominal current), set acceleration trimmer P3 and deceleration trimmer P4 at the minimum (this is normally standard set from Rowan). Be sure that the motor runs with the max load set. Now give a start to the motor and check the motor arrive to the nominal speed within the maximum time of 20 seconds; over this time led L7and L4 ligths on. If the light L4 gets on it indicates that the current is not enought for right acceleration and it is necessary to set more starting current. In this case it is suggested to check again the setting (P1)of the motor nominal current by comparing it with the label data. If starting operation is correct, without fault signalation, try to limit the most possible the maximum starting current (up to a maximum of twice the In) without causing L4 lighting at the end of the acceleration ramp. Once set the minimum current necessary for a full load starting, set P3 for a soft starting ramp. On braking by ACC/DEC contact closing, Set P4 for current deceleration ramp (MAX 4 seconds). REGULATION RANGE FOR TRIMMER P2 (INX) MAXIMUM STARTING CURRENT Trimmer P2 sets the maximum starting value and goes from minimum 2 times to maximum 4 times the nominal current set with the trimmer P1 and S1 closed, from 1 time to 2 times with S1 open. Bring forward the motor start-up giving a minimum starting current indipendently by the acceleration ramp. Card code 270R works correctly with temperature between -5 C / +40 C. Higher temperatures can damage or cause breaks. For that reason,put the card far away from heat generators and cool the cabinet in presence of high temperatures. STANDARD PRE-SET The card code 270R gets out from Rowan laboratory checked and presetted in the following manner: - Starting ramp with check of starting current and stop in deceleration by voltage ramp. - micro S1 closed. - trimmer P1 (nominal current setting) set at half scale. - trimmer P2 ( max starting current setting)set for 4 times the nominal current set with P1. - trimmer P3 acceleration ramp set for minimum ramp. - trimmer P4 deceleration ramp set for ramp at 3 secs. - power supply pre-set for 400VAC. 7
