8 Turbine Power Control Unit The Turbine Power Control Unit (TPCU) performs system control and power conditioning functions and consists of the following: The turbine system controller and human interface (HMI) Regenerative Drive System (RDS) Acts as a bi-directional AC-DC-AC converter Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) Capable of providing sufficient power to the TPCU to allow controlled shutdown in the event of a grid failure *All above components are certified to the UL 1741 and CSA 22.2, G59/2 (UK) standards for grid connection Computerized Control System The key to our performance is our ability to manage all system components with a computerized control system which continually monitors all key parameters and moving parts to ensure safety and optimal performance. 10 Lightning Safety Systems System / Device Description Nacelle The anemometer has integrated lightning protection Blades The blades have a copper cable from tip to base to channel lightning Conforms to IEC Turbine Bearings The turbine bearings are protected by 200kV insulation, the lightning charge is carried from the turbine shaft to the tower by dual 1,000 volt brushes 6 Stage Speed Control Design Orenda Energy Solutions Skye wind turbine has a hierarchy of systems to control the turbine as wind-speed increases, and ultimately bring the turbine to a controlled stop: 1. Electrical Load Torque Control 2. Hydrostatic Braking (patent pending) 3. Stall Regulated Blades 4. Active Yaw 5. Emergency/Parking Brake 6. Dynamic Resistive Load (Grid loss) 10

11 Safety Management Orenda s Skye wind turbine solution is equipped with the latest technology to maintain safe performance: Braking System In event of failure, both the hydrostatic and parking brake are applied (fail-safe) Grid Loss In the event of loss of grid, the resistive load in the tower replaces grid load and allows the turbine to come to a safe stop Cable Twist The turbine counts the number of cable twists and automatically unwinds on start-up once it has reached a set number of twist revolutions Anemometer If no wind speed reading is present, the turbine remains in free yaw, with the parking brake applied If wind direction does not change regularly, it is assumed the reading is inaccurate and the turbine is brought to a controlled stop Multiple Sensor System - There are multiple sensors which drive the computer controlled alarm system Any significant alarm will result in the turbine being brought to a controlled stop Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) - Capable of providing sufficient power to the TPCU to allow controlled shutdown in the event of a grid failure 11
