We see service as the result of a long-term relationship where our aim is to deliver solutions through our experience and high-level engineering in orden to provide you with full support throughout the operating life of the products you purchase. WHY REENGINEERING? The gearbox is a critical component in any wind power train, especially those with high operational demands, and therefore accounts for a large part of the operating and maintenance costs of any wind farm. Operating failures, which signal the need for corrective action involving either repair or complete replacement, are common, and the failure rate increases significantly a third of the way through the theoretical operating life of the gearbox, that is, when it has used only 30% of its officially and independently certified design life. Our experience at Gamesa Gearbox suggests that this worrying gap between the design life and actual operating life of a gearbox could be directly linked to design and/or manufacturing errors, and/ or inappropriate operating and/or maintenance strategies. The first of these factors, design and/or manufacturing errors, may come suddenly, a priori, given that the knowledge and understanding of gearbox design and manufacturing concepts go back decades and have more than proved their validity in all types of industrial applications. However, the direct transfer of industry standards across different sectors is precisely the error of approach into which all gearbox manufacturers fall when first embarking on designs for the wind power sector. The new designs of recent years show a significant improvement in robustness and reliability, two properties that are essential under wind turbine operating conditions, which contrast sharply with the quasi-static conditions that exist in most other industrial applications.
