SUBMARINE FORCES ALL THE EXPERIENCE OF A WORLD LEADER IN NAVAL DEFENCE DCNS is the European leader in naval defence and a major player in marine renewable energies. As an international high-tech company, DCNS uses its extraordinary know-how, unique industrial resources and capacity to arrange innovative strategic partnerships to meet its clients requirements. The Group designs, produces and supports submarines and surface ships. The Group also provides services for naval shipyards and bases. In addition, the Group offers a wide range of marine renewable energy solutions.
DCNS, YOUR NAVAL PARTNER SUBMARINE FORCES 3 Excellence in every aspect of submarine operations for more than a hundred years DCNS experience in submarine warfare dates back to the very beginning of underwater exploration, when the world s first torpedo-carrying submarine was built in 1887 at the Mourillon arsenal in Toulon (later to become a DCNS industrial site). Since then, the Group has developed generation after generation of cutting-edge programmes, accumulating expertise and continually improving its industrial plants and techniques as it carried out the most innovative projects and highly complex integration programmes. The most extensive expertise available Over the years, DCNS has developed the capacity to design and build all three major categories of submarines: diesel electric submarines, nuclear-powered attack submarines and nuclear missile-launching submarines ranging in size from the smallest, used for coastal defence, to the largest, used by France s strategic oceanic forces. Being the one and only industrial group in the world to conceive and build both diesel-electric and nuclear submarines gives DCNS its unique expertise and strength. DCNS continues to develop submarines as well as their equipment and systems. Each new programme leads to technological improvements which can then in turn be used on board other classes of ships, either diesel-electric or nuclear. This guarantees innovation and maintains industrial competences and assets. From conception to dismantling: answering navies every needs DCNS services cover the entire life-cycles of submarine fleets from early planning to dismantling. We design, build and maintain ships, fit them with equipment, develop and integrate systems. We also provide training services. Also, the Group s engineering department and powerful industrial plants can be employed to work on any type of programme. This covers designing a new ship or adapting an existing type of ship to any needs. DCNS integrates the very best weapons, combat systems and other equipment into submarines under construction or already in service.
SUBMARINE FORCES RESPONDING TO NAVIES NEEDS DCNS experience has shaped a complete range of ships to answer navies every needs. This unique expertise has been maintained for over a century, designing and building submarines, systems and equipments on the cutting edge of technology. SCORPENE 2000 SSK LE TERRIBLE SSBN EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEMS SUBTICS DCNS powerful, highly automated and highly integrated combat system is fitted on board each of our submarines. F21 TORPEDO The F21 is the new high technology heavyweight torpedo that DCNS has developed for the French Navy. CANTO -S This decoy system is based on confusion and dilution to defeat attacking torpedoes and protect the submarine s escape.
DCNS, YOUR NAVAL PARTNER SUBMARINE FORCES 5 SCORPENE 1000 SSK SMX 3.0 BARRACUDA SSN FUEL CELL 2 ND GENERATION DCNS designs Air-Independent Propulsion systems to safely enhance SSKs underwater autonomy. SUBMARINE AIR WARFARE Defence against helicopters and aircraft made possible by proven missile system.
Transferring knowledge is one of DCNS expertise. All or parts of submarine construction projects can be carried out with industrial partners at local shipyards. This solution has allowed client navies to build their naval industries up to the desired skill s level, with the help of DCNS. For instance, Scorpene are built by Indian shipyard, integrating local made equipments. DCNS also assists Brazil for its national programmes of submarines. Scheduled refits provide an opportunity for DCNS to integrate the very latest technologies on board ships throughout their life cycle and adapt to new norms. DCNS had Malaysian submariners trained ab initio.
DCNS, YOUR NAVAL PARTNER SUBMARINE FORCES 7 SUPPORT ENSURING SUBMARINE FORCES MEET THEIR FULL POTENTIAL Every navy has specific requirements, depending on its environment and the age of its submarine force. This is why DCNS gives navies a dual guarantee of high standards of performance and reliability, thanks to tested processes; and a modular offer, to meet the specific requirements of every submarine forces. From design to decommissioning and from naval base infrastructure to in-servicesupport, DCNS offers control on every aspect of a submarine s life cycle. This means the Group can support navies in the long term, whether they are acquiring their first ever submarine force, strengthening or modernising an existing fleet, or developing and consolidating their industrial capacity in this area. TAILOR-MADE SOLUTIONS BASED ON TRIED-AND-TESTED PLATFORMS DCNS all-encompassing approach of submarines gives navies a dual guarantee. Firstly, all our solutions have very high standards of performance and reliability, thanks mainly to the privileged partnership between DCNS and the French Navy. The four SSBNs and six SSNs currently operated by the French Navy have all been built and are currently supported by DCNS. All our solutions are based on tried-and-tested processes and technologies. Secondly, DCNS offer is modular, enabling us to adapt to client navies needs. From the outset, DCNS submarines and services are designed as platforms with an adaptable architecture. This means DCNS can develop a customised solution to meet the specific requirements of every client navy. PROMOTING THE INDEPENDENCE OF CLIENT NAVIES A navy s capacity to operate its submarine fleet independently and sustainably has considerable strategic importance, especially because of its use of significant resources and cutting-edge technologies. This is why DCNS submarine solutions are based on transfers of know-how and technology. Working closely with client navies and specially selected local industrial partners, the Group has developed tried-and-tested programmes to upgrade naval skills in every field from design construction and in-service support to crew education and training. 1,000 HIGHLY SKILLED DCNS EMPLOYEES TAKE PART IN SUBMARINE ENGINEERING. FOCUS ON A long-term partnership with Brazilian engineers DCNS set up a special submarine design school for Brazilian engineers in 2011 at its Lorient site. After a period of eighteen months of training, DCNS has continued carrying out its design support at the Brazilian site of São Paulo. The objective performed in Brazil consists in helping to build the non-nuclear part of the first nuclear attack submarine to be designed in Brazil. The submarine is still to be commissioned in 2025.
Le Terrible is the latest of Le Triomphant-class SSBNs to have entered active service, in Le Terrible is the largest and most complex submarine ever built by the Group. It is fitted with over 75,000 pieces of equipment and the new generation M51 ballistic missile. The four-unit series of Le Triomphant-class submarines is the major component of French deterrence. DCNS is responsible for its Through-Life Support, having signed a contract that guarantees a permanent presence at sea for the French Navy s strategic force. Barracuda-class SSNs bear the very latest know-how and technologies. Barracuda is an evolutive platform adapted to modern constraints. The French Navy launched a six-unit Barracuda construction programme.
DCNS, YOUR NAVAL PARTNER SUBMARINE FORCES 9 TECHNOLOGIES SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION DCNS is the French Navy s historical industrial partner. DCNS can boast over 50 years experience in the field of nuclear-powered submarines, alongside continuous work on diesel-electric submarines for the past 100 years. The Group has always benefited from long-term programmes enabling it to develop and maintain a remarkable industrial base, which is a permanent source of innovation for DCNS and its partners. Maintaining an effective ocean-based deterrence involves a constant quest for innovation in matters such as propulsion, hull shape, discretion, detection and combat systems. One must bear in mind that missile-launching nuclear-powered submarines are the most highly complex systems ever built by mankind. Mastering their conception, construction and maintenance has thus allowed the Group to remain at the forefront of submarine technology for decades. The resulting innovations have been adapted to suit all our products, of which the front runners are the diesel-electric submarines built for partner navies. MASTERING COMPLEXITY DCNS has acquired an ability to master highly complex programmes, whether nuclearpropelled or diesel-electric submarines. The Group s experience in designing and building nuclear submarines is an excellent illustration of this ability. DCNS started research on nuclear-propulsion decades ago, before designing and building France s first nuclearpowered submarines in the 1960s six units of which Le Redoutable was the first-of-class. When it entered service in 1971, it was an example of technological prowess: one whole programme had encompassed the design and construction of an 8,000-ton nuclear-powered ship that could fire a strategic missile whilst submerged. Driving this programme proved DCNS could mobilise and coordinate a vast naval and military industrial base. The construction, maintenance and continuous upgrade of Le Redoutable-class SSBNs went on. In the meantime, DCNS began preparing the next generation of French SSBNs in the early 1980s. Le Triomphant was the first of four ships the fourth being Le Terrible, which was designed to be equipped with the new M51 ballistic missile from the outset. SSBNS AND SSNS SHARING THE VERY HIGHEST LEVEL OF TECHNOLOGY The know-how and technologies developed for French SSBNs were used directly to help design SSNs for the French Navy. The expertise acquired while building Le Redoutable-class SSBNs was therefore used to develop the first generation of French SSNs in the early 1980s. The six Rubis-class SSNs resulting from this programme were the most compact nuclearpowered submarines ever built. Although at first, these ships had a design derived from the diesel-electric Agosta submarine, during the so-called Améthyste upgrade, they were subsequently given an optimised hydrodynamic shape. Rubis-class submarines already have a new successor: the Barracudaclass. The Barracuda programme benefited from the Le Terrible programme, using the progress in propulsion and discretion thus acquired and gathering the most advanced technologies together. Scorpene 2000 and Scorpene 1000 will also benefit from these innovative programmes. 15 millions HOURS OF WORK WERE REQUIRED TO BUILD LE TERRIBLE. FOCUS ON Anticipating future needs with the SMX concept-ships DCNS is constantly striving to think out of the box and design innovative solutions to anticipate on client navies future requirements. This results in our SMX concept-ships. In 2010, DCNS explored extreme mobility and semi-surface movement with SMX 25. In 2012, DCNS went on to unveil SMX 26, designed to open access to coastal and shallow waters. In 2014, SMX Ocean is a SSK with the equivalent capacities of a SNA. In 2016, DCNS combines connectivity and stealth in a SMX created for the next generations of submariners, using 3.0 technologies: SMX 3.0.
When DCNS Scorpene 2000 entered service, they imposed a new standard of performance therefore establishing themselves as the preferred choice of our partner navies throughout the world. The Scorpene 2000 are oceangoing submarines which combine extreme mobility, a large weapons payload (missiles, mines and all types of heavy torpedoes), superior acoustic discretion and a powerful acoustic surveillance ability even at top speed. Scorpene 2000 owes its success to its modular design, which means it can be adapted to suit each navy s requirements, integrate the latest technological innovations. Scorpene 1000 is adapted to specific littoral intelligence and surveillance missions. Scorpene 2000 s manoeuvrability enables it to operate easily in shallow waters. DCNS has been chosen by Australia for the SEA 1000 programme, with the Shortfin Barracuda, a SSK of more than 4,000 t.
DCNS, YOUR NAVAL PARTNER SUBMARINE FORCES 11 MODULARITY RELIABLE AND TAILOR-MADE CONVENTIONAL FORCES DCNS has a whole family of high-performance diesel-electric submarines available. These submarines are both modular and adaptable to client navies requirements. They cover all types of missions and environments, from open oceans to littoral waters. Mastering the building of SSN, it can also propose bigger submarines to customers requiring longer missions and larger payload. DCNS has maintained constant expertise in diesel-electric submarines ever since the end of the 19th century when the Gymnote was designed. The Gymnote was the first electrically-propelled submarine which was capable of launching torpedoes. Since then, new generations and new types of submarines have constantly been developed and improved over time. Submarines like Naïade, Émeraude, Saphir, Minerve, Aurore, Daphné, Agosta and Scorpene 2000 ranging sizes from 400 to over 3,000 t were designed and built to adapt to operational constraints met by the French Navy as well as partner navies. SCORPENE 1000: CONTROLLING LITTORAL WATERS DCNS completed the development of Scorpene 1000 after client navies had shown interest in a submarine optimised for coastal operations. DCNS wanted to design a submarine both capable of carrying out diesel-electric submarines usual missions and also operate in shallow waters with specifically adapted systems and equipment. Scorpene 1000 can therefore handle every type of threat thanks to its high performance sensors and ability to fire heavy weapons, whilst its small size and manoeuvrability allow it to operate easily in shallow waters. Its design is based on sea-proven technological and architectural solutions and its effectiveness is also guaranteed by its highly automated adapted combat system which can be manned by a small crew. This ensures client navies operate a reliable and trustworthy submarine, yet at a reduced price and guaranteed lower operating costs. SCORPENE 2000: A TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED SEA-PROVEN POLYVALENT SYSTEM Scorpene 2000 is the latest ocean-going diesel-electric submarine to have been designed by DCNS. Scorpene 2000 is equipped with the very best submarine technology available: it can travel at over 20 knots and it offers the best indiscretion ratio on the market. This performance can be drastically improved by modular submergedautonomy boosting sections (see below). Scorpene 2000 can offer high performances on every mission, be it antisubmarine warfare, intelligence-gathering, or special operations. Its modular design is compatible with a wide range of systems and equipment, which makes it the perfect choice for navies looking to meet both current and future needs with a cutting-edge sea-proven ship. 37 SUBMARINES WERE BUILT FOR PARTNER NAVIES OVER THE PAST FIFTY YEARS EITHER BY DCNS OR AS PART OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER PROGRAMMES (THIS INCLUDES A TOTAL OF 14 SCORPENE 2000 FOR CHILE, MALAYSIA, INDIA AND BRAZIL). FOCUS ON AIP Fuel Cell 2 nd Generation All navies have different concept of operations for their submarines, and these concepts may evolve during the life time of their ships. That s why, to boost submerged autonomy, DCNS offers different solutions, each allowing specific uses. They are provided in completely modular and independent sections. Those solutions are: FC2G (Fuel Cell 2 nd Generation), including the reformer unit to produce hydrogen from the ship s fuel. They offer the best performance at patrol speed; lithium-ion batteries, rechargeable at sea. They are very efficient for high speeds.
The DCNS-designed SUBTICS submarine combat system can be adapted to fit all types of submarines, whether under construction or during an upgrade, and the capacity of its sensors and weapons can be optimised. SUBTICS has been selected by many of the world s navies to equip submarines designed both by DCNS (Agosta, Scorpene 2000, Scorpene 1000) and its competitors (U209, A12, A17). It also exists in a specific version called SYCOBS for nuclear-powered submarines of the French submarine forces. The F21 can be launched extremely fast and far. It can counter the very latest generation of countermeasures. The CANTO -S system confuses and defeats enemy torpedoes.
DCNS, YOUR NAVAL PARTNER SUBMARINE FORCES 13 SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT ADAPTING EVERY SUBMARINE TO ITS SPECIFIC OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT A submarine s performance depends both on its design and equipment and on how well these elements combine. This is why DCNS does not only integrate complex systems, but also designs and produces a large number of essential pieces of submarine equipment. DCNS s job is to answer any kind of operational requirements to reach the best performances. Turnkey solutions are simply not always the appropriate solution. This is why DCNS supplies client navies with systems that guarantee ships to achieve their ambitious performance objectives, whether the ships are DCNS-designed or not and whether the ship is being built or upgraded. OVERALL PROJECT ARCHITECT, NAVAL EQUIPMENT SUPPLIER, AND SYSTEMS INTEGRATOR DCNS s hundred years experience in project design, includes designing and manufacturing a range of major systems, perfectly adapted to the constraints of integration into a military submarine. The field of DCNS expertise ranges from platform equipment (exchangers, steering apparatus, hull sections, etc.), to combat equipment (masts, tubes, torpedoes, countermeasures, etc.) and power-propulsion systems (drive-trains, AIP, etc.). The Group s expertise in manufacturing naval equipment guarantees its client navies performance and innovation. Furthermore, the permanence of the Group s industrial base promises long-term availability. DCNS also has outstanding integration skills, and is able to integrate specific equipment chosen by its clients, as shown for instance by the total integration of SUT torpedoes into the SUBTICS system on the Chilean and Indian Scorpene. EXPERTISE THAT REACHES BEYOND OUR SOLE PRODUCTS DCNS expertise is not limited to its sole ships, systems and equipment it covers the whole field of submarine building and technology. The Group possesses recognised experience in adapting its combat systems to other types of submarines, including the U209, A12 and A17. The Group s industrial programmes abroad (India and Brazil) have developed specific expertise in integrating equipment produced locally by third-party manufacturers selected in collaboration with client navies. 42 OF THE WORLD S SUBMARINES HAVE BEEN FITTED WITH SUBTICS COMBAT SYSTEMS (10 AS PART OF UPGRADE PROGRAMMES FOR NON-DCNS-DESIGNED PLATFORMS). FOCUS ON At the forefront of underwater warfare DCNS has dedicated laboratories and engineering departments to Research and Development it has also created a new branch within the Group called DCNS Research. Our Research and Development teams are busy preparing for the future of submarine warfare and are working on technological breakthroughs and future capacities. Amongst their many fields of exploration, DCNS has carried out pioneering research into two key concepts for the next generations of submarines: anti-air self-defence and launching and retrieving Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV).
GLOSSARY Safety DCNS rules to design safe submarines are based on a century of experience and feedbacks. Use of complex simulations and mock-ups ensure respect of these rules. Redundancy of vital systems, possibility of separate mode of control in downgraded situations, and adapted damage control equipment and procedures ensures the survivability of the ship. Acoustic discretion It is fundamental for a submarine s efficiency and survivability. The experience gained in designing a 14,000 t SSBN, beyond the stealthiest of the world, benefits to all DCNS made submarines, including for the high speed necessary to the activities of a modern SSK. Equipment manufacturing Some equipment are too specific and sensitive to be acquired externally. That s why DCNS produces a wide range of products, like torpedo tubes, masts, exhaust valves, shaftlines or countermeasures. Equipment integration It includes the definition of complete specifications, and the ability to test those equipment in DCNS facilities. This capability is of utter importance for the customer, who has the choice between different suppliers, including those of his own country. This is fundamental for strategic independence in the long term and transfer of technology between DCNS and the national industries. Equipment and material qualification DCNS operates its own facilities to test in real conditions all equipment and materials to be installed in a submarine. This includes resistance to pressure, corrosion, shock, weariness, temperature, vibrations.
DCNS, YOUR NAVAL PARTNER SUBMARINE FORCES 15 Modularity Quality of DCNS submarines, allowing the customer to choose different configurations, for the energy systems, the sensors, and the weapons. F21 torpedoes F21 torpedoes are heavyweight torpedoes manufactured by DCNS. They equip the French Navy. External belts Modular external systems that allows to rig the submarine for specific missions. DCNS has developed belts for special operation forces deployment, mines laying, drones launching and recovering. They include the necessary interfaces between submarines and carried equipment. DCNS Universeaty DCNS offers a large range of training courses and facilities. We can train client navies thanks to a series of tactical, platform and sailing simulators. This helps client navies in acquiring new skills in recruitment, qualification and monitoring of their submarine forces and personnel. Indiscretion ratio An SSK has to go to periscope depth to charge its batteries. The indiscretion ratio is the percentage of the duration necessary for these charges on the duration of the whole patrol. DCNS proposes three modular autonomy boosting sections, that drastically improve this parameter. Virtual reality These tools are used at every stage, from design to building, including training and preparation of maintenance tasks. Land strike capability The NCM (Naval Cruise Missile) and the associated mission preparation modules equip the French Navy SSN Barracuda, and can be integrated on DCNS conventional submarines.
