Choosing the right watermaker can be a difficult decision; with many factors to consider to ensure you get the right model for your needs. We have many years experience with watermakers, and have seen them develop from the rudimentary and sometimes tempremental models of 10 years ago to the sophisticated, reliable, low maintenance models of today. Consider how much water you need to make, how much space you have available for installation and most importantly, how much power you have available. How do they work? Most marine watermakers use a process known as reverse osmosis to extract fresh water from brine. Basically it involves putting the sea water under pressure (some psi) over a semi permeable coiled membrane. Fresh water then migrates through the membrane and is collected; leaving behind a more concentrated brine solution. As only about 10% of the brine passed over the membrane passes through, the remaining 90% is dumped overboard. There are two methods used to achieve the pressure needed for reverse osmosis to take place. Traditionally a high pressure piston cat type pump is used; this has the advantage of being slightly less expensive than other methods but on the downside is these type of pumps use a lot of power, are noisy, require regular maintenance and will unfortunately die if they run dry. Modern technological advances have seen the evolution of the energy recovery pump. This is a unit driven by a small dc feed pump which amplifies the pressure to the required level using a combination of Valves and pistons. Energy recovery units are very efficient, quiet in operation and need little maintenance. The diaphragm pumps used are self priming and suffer no ill effects if run dry. On the down side energy recovery systems tend to be more expensive. Our most popular units by far - using energy recovery devices, these watermakers are able to operate using very little power when compared to a traditional piston pump type watermaker. They will run happily from a battery bank, so ideal for boats without a generator. They perform very well in the litre per hour production range. Above this they tend to lose efficiency. Advantages: Very low DC power consumption. Can easily be run without generator. Quiet operation. No pressure adjustment to carry out. Disadvantages: More expensive than piston pump type units.
