This is one of the best layouts around, so if you are planning your first layout, there is a lot to learn about here. So, what makes it one of the best? Well, it is a reasonable size, but has a lot of interesting features packed into it. It has real water, a working drawbridge, a working cable car, a circus, and a working volcano. Plus lots of interesting buildings, and plenty of plants. Sal says his newest additions are a larger saw mill, and a ball beaning mill. As if that weren't enough, there are also two loops of track. One is a logging line with steep grades and sharp curves, and the other is flatter and with easier curves, I don't seem to have any notes about clearances, but there are some fairly standard size truss bridges, so let that be your guide. Gary & Marilyn Siegel's SP line Barbara. The layout is modeled after the Southern Pacific's line between San Jose and Santa Cruz with the era set to the late 1950's. It is a point to point design with a mail line that is about 750 feet long. Its half dozen passing sidings are designed to encourage operating trains in addition to just watching them run. Gary has also added two branch lines that are long enough to qualify as layouts in any other yard. The minimum radius on the main line is 8 ½ feet, and the grades are no worse than 1.5%. Note that the upper branch line is a logging line, and has much tighter curves and steeper grades. The layout favors first and second generation diesels, but the tunnels are wide enough for all but the biggest 1:20 equipment as well. The layout does not have any track power, and is strictly battery power and radio control. Holiday Party Thanks to Gary & Marilyn Siegel for bravely volunteering to host our holiday party this year. Next we are meeting at the home of Gary and Marilyn Siegel in Santa 2013 Meets Mele's meet Directions and map omitted from on line edition. Please call meet host for directions. It's time to sign up for 2013 meets!! Prime dates are going fast!! What's With the Rusty Tender Shell? Be sure to read the next exciting issue to find out!!
2 Correction Locomotive For Sale John Power's Shay was an LGB_Aster; not Accucraft as previously reported. Marc Iacobucci has decided to move to more modern locomotives, and so wants to sell his GP38-2. Take it away, Marc: All Aboard!! "Are you looking for an engine that is ready to run and has the top of the line specs? If so you are looking for Marc Iacobucci's lightly used USA Trains Southern Pacific GP38-2. It has only been run about a dozen times and only has a couple of small scratches on the bottom of the snowplow. Please welcome our newest members, Paul and Peggy Graham of Camarillo. Paul says: Although I'm familiar with the Gold Coast HO club in the Murphy auto museum in Oxnard, I didn't know anything about this club until I met Erick Munck recently He and I share many common interests and this is one of them. I retired two weeks ago, so the timing is perfect to join your club and indulge myself in fun activities. I have no G-scale equipment other than a Christmas tree train, but have a Santa Fe Super Chief in HO (A-B-B-A and car consist)... I gravitate to passenger trains and would love to have a G-scale SP Daylight. I saw the locomotive at Allied Trains in Culver City several years ago and never forgot it. Never forgot the price tag, either. My interest started with an elaborate board-mounted Lionel layout given to me by my grandfather when I was 4! He had two daughters and I was the first-born grandson, so I got the benefit of his repressed interest in model trains. Trains continued as part of my growing up days in Detroit, where we were blessed with basements that were perfect for permanent layouts, Erick and I share common interests in full size planes and high performance cars in addition to model trains and planes and I expect that he and I will go on the layout visits together. My wife Peggy enjoys trains also (loves the train building in San Diego's Balboa Park), but will probably be less passionate than Erick and me. I'm glad to be a new member and look forward to this fall's layout tours. It has Phoenix Sound(for the GP38), an Airwire T5000 throttle, an Airwire decoder, a battery charger and Lithium Ion batteries that last me 8 hours all the time. I have engine rev-up, bell, horn, crew chatter, volume up and down and the classic all aboard call! I want to sell this because I have learned that I like the more modern stock like the Dash 9s. So if you would like this engine for $100 off what I put into it call me at (805) The price is $850 but give me a full or your best offer. Remember I put $950 into it. Thanks!" You Tube Video Ed Davis sent a link to a video shot in 1928 that shows the construction of a steam locomotive. Watch at 3:48 where a foreman shoves a worker out of the way of a large piece of steel being hoisted through the air. John Corradini, a long time member who worked at the Sacramento Shops in the Cab Forward days, recalls that locomotive shops were dangerous places to work, although his was better lit than this one. v=ncbtxlmscwk&feature=related
3 Beaver & Mary DeBievre's meet Beaver has been in and out of the hospital lately; but nothing was going to keep him from having his meet as scheduled. We had a large crowd, including both of Beaver's doctors, perfect weather (is there any other kind in Santa Barbara?), and great food, although perhaps a bit heavy on the desserts. We had lots of people running trains, and almost as many taking photos. So many in fact, that hardly any of these pictures are mine, so you are in for a treat today. It was a good day, aside from the bank being robbed, and a cowboy who kept getting thrown out of the saloon. Jim Eldridge showed off the versaility of the Ten Wheeler by running it on the point of two trains. The first was all passenger cars, the second was a string of hopper cars that Georges Arseneault brought. wrong battery connector and couldn't get it to run.. Joe Heumphreus ran his Sierra Ry Consolidation and an interesting train including his prize winning drover's caboose. John Power ran his Goose. Doc Riese ran another LGB Ten Wheeler with a rather Christmas-y but still very nice look. Ed Morse brought his and a couple of passenger cars. Bill Fraser ran a Porter and a short log train with varying numbers of logs. Georges Arseneault brought his Santa Fe Pacific; but brought the Rex Davis ran a very mixed train of a Hartland Goose and trailer separated by two gondolas. Thanks to Bill Fincher, Ken Kelley and Dennis Paulazzo for contributing most of these photos. Thanks to Beaver's doctors and nurses for pulling off another miracle of modern medicine. And thanks to Beaver and Mary for another wonderful meet.

7 Mark & Sheila Goodman's meet It was hot; so people mostly stayed in the shade. Good for them; not so good for interesting pictures. But there was a good crowd, and lots of great food. This was a joint meet with the Central California Coast GRS, so we got to meet even more train folks. The picture of the small layout below was taken last year; just add shade and people to know what it looked like this year. The large outside layout is perfect for long trains with multiple locomotives, and we had several doubleheaders. Beaver recovered enough from his meet last week to bring a train to this one. It had a brand new controller installed, which took awhile to get sorted out, but eventually it ran fine. interesting looking , but didn't run it, and I didn't get a picture of it. Ed Morse ran a doubleheader of U25Bs with a long string of cars. Ed illustrated the hazards of operating in dark territory (no automatic train signaling) when his train got ahead of him and rear ended Georges train. Clint Hinkle (CCCGRS) brought an engine that Tito built. This one was a 2-6-2T that ran well and looked great. Georges Arseneault had a doubleheader of a D&RG K27 and a K37 with a long string of hopper cars. Elden Palding (CCCGRS) ran a diesel lettered for his Colima & Silla RR. Mark wasn't about to let us have all the fun. He rain a Shay with a battery box car, and a Mogul pulling some passenger cars on the small layout. He also ran yet another doubleheader with a pair of U25Bs and a short string of cars on the big layout. CCCGRS member Tito Gutierrez brought a couple of his own creations. They are all based on LGB motor blocks and are all unmistakeably locomotives, which makes him a saner version of Chris Walas. The one he Thanks to Mark and Sheila for another ran this time was a very free-lanced terrific meet. Mason Bogie. He also brought a very

I arrived very late in the day, after most of the crowd had come and gone. Gary reports that the Sunday was much Thanks to Bill Fincher for contributing some of these pictures.
