1 SiCan Simple CAN Extension Charger to PacMon Provides and extension charger to PacMon. Drives CAN TC (Elcon) type chargers. Interfaces with the CMon, SiMon, and UMon. Programmable high and low (balance) power levels. Uses common type interface cables. Provides extra high current charger boost. Sealed in plastic. Compact in-line cable design to fit anywhere. Daisy chain option for multiple charger networks. SiCan (Simple CAN charger) can be used to drive an extension charger from PacMon. PacMon provides the primary charger control. The extension SiCan provides an additional high current charger. This is a low cost enhancement to a CellMon Battery Angel TM network provided by Batrium. The PacMon is normally used to provide complete battery supervision and charging solution (interfaces and charge algorithms). Advanced users can add an optional extension charger. SiCan is controlled by PacMon. The CMon cable connects directly to the fully programmable CAN-enabled (TC or Elcon) charger (not using the external CAN conversion module). SiCan holds programmable parameters that determine charger currents and voltages. When is applied, SiCan drives the charger targets, and reads the actual voltages and currents (passed on to the monitoring PC). As an extension to PacMon some of the features provided in the more complex stand-alone SiCan/SiMon solution are not applicable, and will not be available. The complexity of connecting multiple chargers to battery packs must be understood by the operator before proceeding with this advanced option. It is possible to attach multiple extension chargers (contact Batrium for advice on these more complex options). 3 SiCan Red PCB Charge Status LED The red SiCan PCB charger status LED provides pulse sequences that indicate logical charger status. It is essentially the same as the PacMon blue fuel charge status LED except that is downstream to PacMon and hence provides additional status of the extension charger. Red PCB Status LED (Same as PacMon Blue LED) Condition. Condition. Continually with an pulse every 3 sec. Full Charge (high current). Continually with an pulse every 1 sec. Slow Charge (balancing/equalising). Near end of charge. Flash every 3 seconds. Charge Complete. This state is latched (remains) and is only reset after cycling the power. Error occurred (not charging). Flashing Fast (.1 sec rate) 1) Check that the charger is connected. 2) Restart charging (power cycle). 3) Parameter is out of range. 4) PacMon detected an error (critical). (no LED pulses) Power is (fuel interlock door open). Green SiCan PCB Diagnostic LED This flashes whenever a charger status message is received from the charger (i.e. once every second). It also flashes for every valid commissioning message received from the PC. Green PCB Diagnostic LED Condition. Condition. Flash every 1 second. Operational State. It will flash every a charger messages has been received (once a second). Single Flash Configuration (Commissioning) message received. Flashes when a message has been received from the PC (via UMon). This is not normally visible when sending data to SiCan with the automated Batrium software. Continually Advanced Configuration State. SiCan has been left in read/write state. 4 SiCan Connections SiCan is connected between a UMon and a CMon. Up to 5 meters of common male-to-female extension cable can be added at either end (the signals at SiCan are not actually uses type cable only). Only use passive type extension cables without electronics included. A UMon is used between SiCan and the PC (or PacMon Output ). SiCan has a number of signal wires that are not used in this Extension charger application. The green, brown, and yellow wires are left unterminated and should be insulated to prevent contact with chassis or other signals. These unused signals are only required should SiCan be used without a PacMon. When (powered from ) SiMon is in configuration mode. V Chassis Ground (same connection point as PacMon Chassis ) Low impedance connection to chassis (for low noise). Input signal from PacMon to SiCan (connect to PacMon SiMon Ext ) Must be connected to enable SiCan operation (open or will disable). Ground Connection SiCan must be connected to the system s chassis ground (earth). This is normally connected to the same chassis point as the PacMon pin (M6 bolt) as a V reference. This provides both single fault protection and electrical noise (transient) isolation. Do not operate the system without first securing this safety ground cable. Do not extend this ground cable unless necessary. It is important to keep the ground cable connection short and thick to reduce the electrical noise in your system. 5 Parameters SiCan Simple CAN Extension Charger to PacMon These parameters are permanently stored in SiCan memory through the Batrium software wizards. In order to set the SiCan parameters, SiCan must be powered ( not applied to PacMon). The port connection is always made through a UMon (usually via the hub outputs on PacMon). The software Commissioning Setup Wizard is sufficient for most applications. The key wizard parameters are the target voltage and current in high power and low power charge conditions. Other parameters are only used for advanced applications (as follows). They can are accessed through the advanced software screens. The low level power is normally set to zero to disable it for an extension charger (it is only used in high power - boost). Variable Min Typ Max Unit Description Notes Properties: High Level Power Maximum charger current and voltage (high level). These parameters will be sent to the charger when the cells are not in bypass. Voltage Number of Cells x 3.75V voltage sent to the charger in high power It is typically set to.1v above the bypass cell voltage parameter (multiplied by the number of cells). e.g. set to 183.5V(=3.75Vx5) for bypass at 3.65V with 5 cells. Max charger current current sent to the charger in high power It is typically set to the maximum charger current. It can be lowered for more gentle charging, however it must be greater than the Warning-Initial Bypass current set in SiMon parameters. Properties: Low Level Power This sets the bypass (throttled) charger current and voltage (low level). These parameters will be sent to the charger when the cells are in bypass. Voltage Number of Cells x 3.75V voltage sent to the charger in low power Normally set to.1v above the bypass cell voltage. See the example calculation above..7a 1 A current sent to the charger in low power It is typically set to.7a to limit CellMon bypass temperature. It must be greater than the Warning-Final Bypass current set in SiMon parameters. Options - Overdue Triggers critical condition. These will stop the charger. Missed Messages n/a 5 n/a # If more than this quantity of missed charger messages occurs. Broken or intermittent charger signal should not persist. Charger message arrives every second thus 5 seconds of missing charger data. Options Shutdown Triggers critical condition.. Triggering these conditions will stop charging. It also sets the end of charge condition (stop current). Low Supply Volts V If the 12V car battery goes below this voltage, SiCan will begin the critical r.
