1 National Biodiesel Foundation Annual Report Clark Avenue, Jefferson City, MO EIN www. biodieselfoundation.org National Biodiesel Foundation Mission and Purpose The National Biodiesel Foundation was established in Our mission is to accomplish outreach, education, research and demonstration activities for the advancement of biodiesel and its co-products. We work to improve rural economic development, national security, air quality and the environment. At the National Biodiesel Foundation, we believe that through the use of biodiesel we can build a better tomorrow. Through the use of biodiesel, we can bring cleaner air, environmental security and economic development to America. Biodiesel is clean-burning product made from domestic, renewable resources such as soybeans, waste vegetable oils and algae. It s simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. Biodiesel blends can be used in diesel engines with no engine modifications. Studies show that by using biodiesel, greenhouse gas can be reduced by 50% or better compared to traditional fuel. Working together with partners that include the petroleum industry,federal and state agencies, government laboratories, trade associations, alternative fuel consultants and equipment providers, the Foundation supports work critical to reducing barriers to biodiesel acceptance The Foundation s efforts are also supported by independent businesses and private donations. 1 National Biodiesel Foundation

2 Letter from the Executive Director This year marked my sixth year as the Executive Director of the National Biodiesel Foundation and it was our busiest year yet. We expanded our partners and donors and, in turn, strengthened our support of biodiesel outreach, education, research and demonstration projects. Specifically, our goals were to increase biodiesel availability, promote biodiesel sustainability, and provide critical research that could lead to expanded markets. Having biodiesel available to purchase is essential for its growth. To assist in this effort, we continued our work with the Department of Energy s Clean Cites Program and were able to fund eight biodiesel terminals around the nation. These companies will provide fuel to areas that never before had the choice to buy this clean-burning, renewable product. I am excited to report that this year we were able to fund several grant proposals for education or research. Our directors allocated money to co-sponsor the 2012 Sustainability Symposium, the Fourth Annual Biofuels Science and Sustainability Tour, and fund research at Purdue University. The Symposium s renowned experts educated more than 200 participants in the fundamental challenges we face to make biodiesel, and our society as a whole, more sustainable. This event took an engaging and provocative look at critical sustainability issues that impact all aspects of our world. The Tour brought key Congressional staff Iowa for a first-hand look at the renewable fuels industry and the agricultural community in action. The Purdue University research lead to an improved understanding of how land transitions globally into and out of agricultural production. Updating the model with accurate biodiesel data was identified by California s technical academic experts as necessary to increase the use and sales of biodiesel within the state. The research resulted in a published paper in Applied Sciences: Induced Land Use Change Associated with US Soy Biodiesel. Our auction, raffle and Super Bowl Party sponsored in part by the National Biodiesel Board were held in Orlando Florida in February raised $26,000. These events were essential to our operations and allow us to continue our efforts. I would like to thank the National Biodiesel Board and our other corporate and individual donors. 7 Auction & Raffle The NBF held its 4 th Annual Auction in February during the National Biodiesel Conference & Expo in Orlando, Florida, February 5-8, We had a record 41 items and raised over $20,000. We would like to again thank everyone who donated items or partipated in the auction. At the opening night conference reception, NBF was offered the opportunity by the National Biodiesel Board to hold a 50/50 raffle and Superbowl football pool. The events were well received and fun for all. The two events brought in about $5,000. All funds were used to support the events listed below. Sustainability Conference NBB worked with USDA and DOE to co-organize a symposium on topics covering the sustainability of biodiesel, renewable fuels, and transportation fuels. NBF supported the National Biodiesel Board in their Sustainability Symposium. This event took an engaging and provocative look at critical sustainability issues that impact all aspects of our society. Renowned experts described the fundamental challenges we face to make our fuel supply, and our world as a whole, more sustainable. The event included candid discussions on climate change, energy security, and food security -- all of which illustrated the seriousness of an unsustainable course. Science-based presentations included impacts of renewable fuels and ways to diversify energy sources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, invigorate local economies, and reduce impacts to the environment while increasing food security. Key topics for the symposium included: Greenhouse gases, energy security, environmental impacts of feedstock production, and impacts on food security. In each topic, issues were discussed that pertain to renewable fuels and transportation fuels in general. The broad inclusion of fuels other than biodiesel was a decision made to attract a wider audience and to appeal to international experts on sustainability. By broadening the scope of the symposium, the hosts improved the caliber of expert speakers as well as increased the draw for attendees that would not necessarily attend a biodiesel-specific meeting. Biodiesel has a good story to tell. Increasing participation at this event helped spread that message to a wider audience and improved the support base for biodiesel. 7 National Biodiesel Foundation

8 Annual Biofuels: Science and Sustainability Tour In September NBF supported the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) so they could host the 4th Annual Biofuels: Science and Sustainability Tour. The event brought Washington, DC policymakers and regulators to Iowa for a firsthand look at the Iowa renewable fuels industry and agricultural community in action. The three-day educational Tour provided participants an opportunity to engage in substantive dialogue with renewable fuels experts, agriculture leaders and state and university officials on important policy matters, regulatory concerns and technical issues facing the renewable fuels industry. In addition, the Tour gave participants a hands-on experience with some of the most exciting breakthroughs taking place in Iowa s most dynamic sector of the economy. Infrastructure Projects Through a four year grant ( )with the US Department of Energy, NBF has been able to work with biodiesel companies to support the expansion or building of eight refueling terminals from California to New York. These project total over $2.5 million dollars. Project partners are providing $1.7 million. Project partners include: Amerigreen, Buckeye Partners, Crimson Renewable Energy, GrowMark, Harms Oil Company, the Renewable Energy Group, Western States, and Westmore Fuel Company, Inc. Five of the eight terminals have begun to sell biodiesel and the remaining locations will be finished in Paper on Induced Land Use Change Associated with US Soy Biodiesel The National Biodiesel Foundation funded Purdue University to develop improvements to more accurately assess land use change associated with biofuels use. This funding results in publication of two research articles Induced Land Use Change Associated with US Soy Biodiesel and Biofuels and Land Use Change: Applying Recent Evidence to Model Estimates. The paper was motivated by recent changes in global land use. Research resulted in an improved ability to model and predict the patterns of land use change. Earlier in the development of biofuels, there was little global land use change because the size of the biofuels programs was relatively small. However, in the past decade, there have been substantial changes in global land use induced partly by higher commodity prices. 8 National Biodiesel Foundation
