Partnerships Innovating products, solutions, processes and services to improve performance and efficiency in the industry. Biodiesel has been produced for many years. In recent times it has become commercially viable for many producers and end-users alike, mostly due to spiralling fuel prices, government taxation and dwindling crude oil supplies. Numerous production facilities have sprung up to reap the benefits of producing environmentally friendly fuels. End-user confidence in biodiesel, however, remains low. Some producers, who do not embrace fuel quality wholeheartedly, have tarnished the reputation of biofuels in the market. Others, who put fuel quality at the heart of their production agenda, will reap benefits in the long run. Importance of Biodiesel Purification & Fuel Quality Biodiesel production is a game of infinite variables. Base feedstocks, titrations, reaction efficiencies, viscosities, past experiences and temperature all influence the process in different ways. Good upstream and in-house quality control procedures mark the difference between successful and unsuccessful producers. In fact, many successful producers will tell you that the reaction process is the easy part of biodiesel production, and that purification process can be a little more challenging. Unfortunately, biodiesel purification is a subject that is far too frequently overlooked by many producers. In this catalog, we will walk you through the filtration and purification processes within biodiesel production. SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION 3

6 Why Purify Biodiesel? Biodiesel consists of three principle ingredients: Oils or Fats: vegetable oil, animal fat, algae oil, soy bean oil, etc. Alcohol Catalyst The basic reaction (Transesterification) Vegetable oil + methanol react to produce biodiesel + glycerine (see below) A catalyst, temperature and agitation process drive the reaction. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH, caustic soda or lye) is usually the catalyst. Potassium hydroxide (KOH, caustic potash) can also be used. Most of the reaction occurs in the first few minutes. ~ 80% in 55 C (131 F) (Ref Darnoko & Cheryan) By neutralizing the free fatty acids with a catalyst, the methanol is able to break down the linking bond in the triglyceride, and the result is the formulation of methyl esters, glycerol and impurities. Once purified, methyl esters become biodiesel. 0 0 H 2 C O C R H 3 C OH H 2 C OH H 3 C O C R = 0 0 HC O C R H 3 C OH HC OH H 3 C O C R = 0 0 H 2 C O C R H 3 C OH H 2 C OH H 3 C O C R = + + = = =? 7 Why Purify Biodiesel? All can have a potentially harmful impact on engine performance and component wear. The previous schematic shows the individual biodiesel production phases of a typical production facility. Once the crude methyl ester has been produced following the transesterification, glycerol separation and methanol removal phase, it cannot be classified as biodiesel until the purification phase is complete. This is explained in more detail in our quality control section of this catalog. Some producers still hold that purifying crude biodiesel is not necessary. However, if you do not clean and dry biodiesel, the following may occur: Corrosion of fuel injectors (water, catalyst) Elastometric seal failures (methanol) Fuel injector blockages (glycerine, soaps, etc.) Increased degradation of engine oil Pump seizures due to high viscosity at low temperatures Corrosion of fuel tanks (excess water, catalyst) Bacterial growths and clogging of fuel lines/filters SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION 5

9 Understanding EN14214 ASTM Specifications In recent times, the US BioDiesel Standard ASTMD6751, and the more stringent European standard EN14214, have been used to show the capabilities of biodiesel production equipment, which is impossible to achieve with just a biodiesel reactor alone. So as to pass the 27 sub-tests, which make up EN14214, it is important to see biodiesel as having three main phases of production: Pre-filtration Reaction Purification Due to the fact the EN14214 is made up of 27 different tests, which cover several key parts of production and rely upon the acquisition of adequate quality feedstocks and good working processes, the production of biodiesel cannot be accounted for by a single piece of equipment. Due to all the variables, that only you as the producer can control, that may influence your production process, Schroeder Fuel Filtration cannot guarantee results that will pass EN We can, however, highlight the processes and procedures to which producers should adhere. A simple suite of tests can be conducted at the time of manufacture to give confidence that the produced biodiesel will meet the EN14214 specification. The easily obtained results can also be used to troubleshoot the manufacturing process, helping the purification system work to its optimum level and giving you confidence in its output. 11 Feedstock Filtration (WVO RSO SBO Algae Oil) Most biodiesel is made from waste vegetable oil (WVO) collected from catering and food production facilities or from virgin feedstocks. Heated WVO storage tank The schematic shows the importance of pre-treatment of base feed-stocks in a batch production system. Settling or alternative removal methods are required to ensure the base feedstock is suitable for use. The WVO often contains high levels of Free Fatty Acids, moisture, as well as solids, other impurities and contaminants. The solids can be filtered out using correct filtration procedures. The water must be removed by heating the oil to above 212 F (100 C) for an extended period to drive the water from the oil. Other drying methods are also acceptable. Pre-treatment of WVO prior to the transesterification process is important. Free Fatty Acids (FFA), oil contaminants and moisture need to be effectively removed in order to ensure a clean, irreversible reaction. The Need for Effective Filtration & Pre Treatment WVO typically contains from 2-5% free fatty acids. If the Free Fatty Acids are above this amount, it is very difficult to produce biodiesel without an acid esterification process. The Free Fatty Acids number is determined by a filtration process. A full description of this process is available on request. A common problem with biodiesel producers is instead of a clear separation between the biodiesel and the glycerine after the reaction and settling process, they end up with a semi-solid, gelatinous mixture that cannot be purified and used as fuel. This is an indication that the oil contained excessive Free Fatty Acids and/or water. Raw vegetable oils that are produced by pressing oilseeds, such as canola, mustard, soybeans or other virgin oils like sugar cane or algae, can also be converted to biodiesel. The Free Fatty Acids level of these raw oils is usually 0.5% or less, which is low enough not to pose a problem. However, the oil may contain gum compounds that can create sludge deposits in the processing equipment, and can make it difficult to separate the glycerine at the end of the reaction. Waste Vegetable Oil/ Virgin Oil Filtration Choose from our range of filter elements (reusable or disposable) and a range of filter housings to suit all budgets and production levels. Schroeder Fuel Filtration can supply individual components, as well as complete filtration systems. Skid mounted units are available in varying sizes. Rugged pump specifications allow for transfer of viscous liquids. Choose from a range of high performance filtration elements in different materials and pore sizes: low cost polypropylene, nylon recleanable and mesh screen are available. Irrespective of your budget and production levels, Schroeder Fuel Filtration has a feedstock filtration solution to suit your operation. SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION 9

12 Crude Biodiesel Purification Having a good and complete reaction is not enough. The production residues and impurities left in the crude biodiesel after the reaction are dangerous to any combustion system and must be removed. Whether your method of biodiesel purification is wet or dry, it is a step that must not be overlooked. As mentioned earlier, after the reaction and separation of the glycerol and demethylating, the biodiesel still has high levels of soaps, aggressive ph, excess caustic and other impurities that must be removed via a wash process. Though Schroeder Fuel Filtration does not endorse one wash method over another, our product portfolio supports the use of any wash method and has the perfect addition for your process to produce clean, pure traceable fuel confidently. Wet Wash Purification The longest standing method for purification is the wet or water wash method. It is a process where a certain percentage of water is added to the crude biodiesel and the water is let to settle. As the water passes through the fuel, it attaches to impurities (An air wash or bubble wash is sometimes paired with this process to accelerate the water passing through the fuel). Once settled, the contaminated water is drained off. This process is repeated until the water removed is clear in color. To assure the amount of water being removed meets standards, the addition of Schroeder Fuel Filtrations TestMate Water Sensor (TWS-C-E) allows you to monitor the amount of moisture in the biodiesel. Once all the water is removed, the remaining clean biodiesel is dried using a de moisturizing method and is ready for final quality check. This purification method works very well; however, with tightening government standards, it becomes difficult and costly to treat and dispose of the highly contaminated water. Other challenges may include the cost and effort to dry the emulsified (oil and water in suspension together) fuel once the purification is complete. All of these issues mentioned can vary based on your actual production method, experience and local laws. The Wet Wash Process Explained* 1 Pre-filtration stage In acco rdance with guidelines, prefilter waste vegetable oil using WVO filter and staged filtration 2 Heat oil to 120 F 3 Check titration level 4 Mix Lye and methanol in separate container 5 Pour into p rocessor and mix to react oil 6 Allow oil to separate 7 Remove glycerine f rom below unwashed biodiesel Unwashed biodiesel Glycerine Unwashed biodiesel Glycerine 8 Wash biodiese l 9 Allow water and biodiesel to separate 10 Remove water layer 11 Transfer to storage container Water Washed biodiesel Water Washed biodiesel 12 Final filtration stage clean up any residual water and particulate to produce clean, bright biodiesel 13 Storage of clean and dry biodiesel before us e 14 Fill fuel tank * The method shown is just for example. 13 Crude Biodiesel Purification Dry wash purification is a more recent addition to biodiesel purification. Current methods for dry washing the crude fuel include ion-exchange resins (like Amberlite or Purolite) and silicates (like Magnesol or TriSyl). Though both methods are dry, they are applied differently. An ion exchange resin is an insoluble matrix (or support structure) normally in the form of small (1-2 mm diameter) beads, usually white or yellowish, fabricated from an organic polymer substrate. The material has highly developed structure of pores on the surface of which easily trap and release ions. The trapping of ions takes place only with simultaneous releasing of other ions, thus the process is called ion exchange. There are different types of ion exchange resin, which are fabricated to selectively prefer one or several different types of ions. Dry Wash Purification Ion Exchange Purification Ion exchange resins are widely used in different separation, purification and decontamination processes. The most common examples in the past have been water softening and water purification. Specialty ion exchange resins can be utilized to bind and remove trace impurities from a biodiesel process stream. After the bulk separation of the glycerin, the biodiesel stream is simply passed though a column of the dried ion exchange resin to bind and remove ionic salts (such as Na+ and Ca++0), trace catalysts, soaps and glycerin. The dried resin also acts as a desiccant retaining and removing trace water from the biodiesel feed. The efficiency and life of a resin to reduce and remove impurities from the biodiesel will depend upon how well bulk separation of the biodiesel and glycerin are made. A resin operation step should be viewed as a polishing process to remove trace materials in the ppm range, not as a replacement for optimizing the bulk separation. Generally, a lead-lag two column continuous feed system is recommended for most operations. In many cases, a third column should be considered in order to ensure continuous operations and reduce down time. On balance, the down side to an ion exchange media is that it does as the name implies; exchanges ions, for whatever is removed from the matrix, something else is added. So, of solving one problem, another is created. Resins remove soap by replacing the metal ion in the soap with a hydrogen ion forming FFA that is passed through the resin and left in the biodiesel. If there is too much soap present, there will be too much FFA in the finished biodiesel to meet TAN (Total Acid Number ASTM D664). GlyceRx should be considered as a replacement for resins, as it is an inert, absorptive material with an affinity for polar compounds. While GlyceRx removes soaps and other polar compounds, nothing is released downstream. Challenges of this process include the possibility of blinding over the resin, and thereby disabling its capacity by passing a bad batch of fuel through it. Other concerns are that fine particles can pass downstream into your final fuel, so final polishing and filtration is still required. Polishing can be accomplished via our K9, MFD or any of our Schroeder filters outfitted with our Z-Media (high efficiency) or Schroeder meltblown elements. The adoption of a TCM, a laser particle monitor, can provide assurance that all final particles have been removed. SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION 11

14 Crude Biodiesel Purification The Dry Wash Process Using Eco2Pure and GlyceRx Methanol removal Methanol & Catalyst Catalyst Mixing Veg Oils Animal Fats UCO Transesterification Phase Separation Crude Glycerine Crude Methyl Ester Purification Wash Final Polish EN/ASTM Standard Biodiesel The Dry Wash Process Explained The Future of Dry Wash Technology Overview GlyceRx is a chemically inert adsorptive media, designed for ease of use and landfill disposal. This product is engineered for optimal purification efficiency, attracting water soluble compounds, glycerin, soaps, glycerides and solids. The media will also adsorb excess methanol from the matrix although we recommend removal of the methanol PRIOR to the GlyceRx process. This ensures the longest bed life possible for the media. GlyceRx is designed to be a filter-free wash process with no consumables in the wash stage. Each pound of GlyceRx is capable of purifying up to 90 gallons of biodiesel (each kilogram is capable of purifying up to 198 gallons of biodiesel*). GlyceRx was designed specifically to meet the ASTM and EN specifications Ease of Use GlyceRx is easy in, easy out. No more filter press, dusty loading or messy resins to handle while eliminating the inconsistencies of cellulose and other organic processes. Feedstock Flexibility Tests have shown GlyceRx works equally well within a full range of biodiesel feedstock, from soy through yellow grease. Low Cost Solution GlyceRx has been designed to keep treatment costs low. For typical applications, treatment cost estimates are between $0.05 and $0.46 per gallon of biodiesel processed. The frequency of re-bedding (replacing the spent media) will depend on the level of impurities in your biodiesel, the amount of biodiesel treated and the size of the Treatment Tower. So a single 110 lb (50 kg) Treatment Tower could only require re-bedding on average every 9,900 gallons. Loading is fast and simple. Once GlyceRx is loaded, no other intervention is required. Once the GlyceRx is bedded in the Treatment Tower, it automatically purifies the biodiesel in a single passage of flow**. 12 SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION

16 The Importance of Final Polishing Irrespective of the wash process you choose for your production facility, final polishing of biodiesel is essential to ensure that fuel, once washed, is free of solid contaminants, moisture, production and wash residues. As the final step in the production process, it gives the producer total peace of mind that the fuel produced is clean and dry. Final polishing is a fundamental part of the overall production process and one that is far too frequently overlooked. It is also overlooked in dry wash purification using ion exchange resin as small particles can migrate downstream. Final fuel quality and in-house quality control are key aspects in successful biodiesel production. Batch consistency and traceability is the main difference between successful and unsuccessful producers. Final polishing is the last production stage in order to achieve stringent industry quality standards. Irrespective of the wash method used, final polishing is required to remove microscopic contaminants invisible to the naked eye, that could result in serious engine damage. 17 Quality Control If you are a high volume producer, minutes count. Finding that you have produced dirty fuel an hour late can leave you with thousands of gallons of problem fuel. Online sensors can help you catch the problem before your customer does. While particle and moisture sensors will not tell you if your centane number is correct or if your flash point is acceptable; they will tell you how much particulate or moisture is in your biofuel. As the fuel passes the sensor, it can display a problem with a filter upstream and if the dry washing chemical (or any other particulate that could clog a fuel filter) is not being removed to standard. Online Quality Control Taking and examining samples during various stages of your production process can provide a priceless level of visibility to troubleshooting or even just understanding your current biodiesel production processes. Offline Quality Control The samples below show how much the appearance of biodiesel changes as it progresses through the various stages of production. These samples were taken at key stages in the production process and clearly demonstrate the importance of effective filtration throughout. 1) WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil): Pre-filtered 2) Biodiesel after reaction and initial glycerin drain 3) After 8-hour settling-final glycerin drain 1 4) Dry washing using Magnesol. 2 Sample taken from wash tank. 3 Significant improvement in clarity and excellent ph neutralization at this stage. Magnesium silicate powder still clearly visible at base of sample bottle 5) Sample taken after the Biodiesel Wash Tower showing great clarity and further reduction in ph value ) After final polishing using the K9. Final effective contaminant and moisture removal and yet further reduction in ph values. Cleanliness in accordance with ISO 4406: 16/14/11 The line of sample bottles below shows the difference between freshly produced, dirty biodiesel still highly contaminated with production chemicals (i.e. Methanol and NaOH left) through to the washed and polished clean samples (right). By adding a small amount of water to a sample bottle containing biodiesel, the water will collect at the base of the bottle, and the clarity of the water is a very good indicator of the level of impurities present. This in effect is a mini wet wash. Simple Water Test SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION 15

18 Quality Control - Fuels Test Kits Sample Reference Chart STAGE VISUAL SAMPLE ph Simple Water Test UNWASHED BIODIESEL ph at 8.5 settled water still highly contaminated WASHED BIODIESEL ph at 7.8 major reduction in production residues & soaps POLISHED BIODIESEL ph reduction to 7.2 water test shows excellent purification Even though your fuel has been washed and polished, sometimes (due to climate or process change) the fuel will appear to have particulate in it. While one may think that a dry washed fuel could certainly have magnesium silicate particles still in it, other factors may be at play. As you will see, understanding your process and fuel from samples can change the way you address any issues in your process. The sample to the right shows Magnesol deposits still present in the final sample. This is unsatisfactory and would suggest that the seals in the wash unit have not been correctly positioned or that the cells have been overused and need replacing. Note the dark bed that Magnesol forms on the base of the sample bottle. The reason it is dark is that it has absorbed production impurities from the fuel. Ensure that the seals are correctly aligned, and rewash and polish this batch to remove Magnesol deposits. The sample to the left shows biodiesel that is starting to wax/ crystallize. This should not be confused with Magnesol deposits. As seen above, Magnesol will form a dark bed on the base of the sample bottle if still present. Winter waxing and crystallization will appear as a wispiness, and may resemble cotton wool in appearance. The best way to verify what this is, to introduce heat (i.e. Heat up in microwave for + 20 seconds.). If the cloudiness disappears, then we know that it is winter gelling or crystallization. Now reduce the temperature and watch the wispiness return. If your samples look like this, you would need to consider a winter additive or pour point depressant to eliminate this. 16 SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION

24 RMF gpm L/min Rolling Media Filtration The Rolling Media Filter (RMF) provides a highly efficient and reliable means of removing solids from process liquids. This filter is a non pressurized system, which is economical and easy to operate. It can handle occasional system upsets or overloads without blinding the filter media. The RMF Filter is a fully automatic system that ensures efficient cleaning of any process fluid. It optimizes the amount of media used at the same time. The solids are discharged as a cake for easy handling and disposal. The liquid to be filtered is pumped or gravity fed into inlet. It is then distributed to the floodbox, which slows the velocity and discharges the liquid over the entire width of the filter media. The liquid filters through the media, and the solids are left behind collecting on the filter media surface. The clean liquid is discharged through the outlet into a tank or discharged into an open system. As the solids are collected on the filter media, the liquid level rises to a preset level. A level sensor initiates an index cycle, and fresh media is indexed displacing a portion of the spent media. The media is then discharged to a waste container. Water is typically introduced into the fuel supply by condensation. Water in a vehicle fuel system can reduce lubricity causing seizure of close tolerance parts and increased wear. Water in fuel storage tanks causes rust and promotes microbial growth. Microbial growth in fuel storage systems begins in free water at the tank bottom and can quickly migrate through the fuel. In warm weather, microbial blooms can quickly overwhelm and bypass fuel filters causing contamination to reach the fuel injectors. Today's high pressure (20,000 + psi) fuel injector systems have tighter tolerances and require complete water removal to minimize wear related failures. The ICF Bulk Fuel Coalescing Filter will protect critical equipment and components. Applications INDUSTRIAL MOBILE MARINE MINING AGRICULTURE VEHICLES Flow Rating: Inlet/Outlet Connection: SAE 16 Max. Higher pressure fuel produces a finer mist of fuel, which burns cleaner. Common rail injection systems run at higher pressures and allow more injections per combustion cycle improving fuel economy, better engine performance and lower noise. Higher pressure fuel injector systems have tighter tolerances and require complete the highest efficiency, single-pass removal to minimize wear related failures. 71 Cold Soak Filtration Solutions SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION 69

72 ColdClear Background Information The new ASTM D6751 Cold Soak Filtration Test is leaving many biodiesel producers and consumers out in the cold. In response, Schroeder Fuel Filtration is proud to present ColdClear, a proprietary multi-stage separation technology designed specifically to ensure that biodiesel products conform to this ASTM standard for cold flow properties. The ColdClear System consists of a three-stage bank of filters using a combination of filtration and adsorption principles to capture compounds that could cause plugging or crystallization in biodiesel fluids. Notably, ColdClear is the first multi-stage treatment system for solving the cold soak filtration dilemma in B-100 biodiesel and biodiesel blends in a single pass. The Cold Flow Dilemma Fuel filter plugging, both in the ASTM procedure and in the field, has been researched significantly with a range of answers to the single question. Most producers and consumers assumed poor cold flow performance was due to feedstock issues, or even poor biodiesel quality. When data started coming in from biodiesel producers across the USA, the answer became even more confusing. A wide range of cold soak results were found for biodiesel samples from a wide range of feedstock and an even wider range of producers. Obviously, the cold flow problem was not just quality or feedstock dependent. Why Cold Soak Matters Cold flow problems can cripple entire fleets during winter months, as evidenced by widespread reports regarding plugged fuel filters, plugged tank filters, and in some instances, even gelling in storage situations. The ASTM Test is performance-based, and designed to aid fleet managers in understanding the gelling potential of fuel during winter operation. Many researchers believed the key culprits were sterol glucosides and monoglycerides produced during the transesterification reaction. While these compounds were found to be in some samples, other biodiesel samples with low concentrations of these compounds were found to fail the cold soak test. In addition, many samples of biodiesel blends gathered due to plugging instances were found to have water and petroleum-based diesel contaminants on the filter. Why ColdClear is the Solution Schroeder Fuel Filtration took this data into consideration in developing ColdClear, a multi-stage filtration/adsorption system that ensures any potential factors that would initiate crystallization or plugging on the filter are dramatically reduced. By sequentially removing certain impurities that create a higher than normal likelihood of surface crystallization on the filter, our ColdClear technology ensures that your biodiesel can meet the ASTM specification for cold soak filtration. It also ensures that fleet customers are receiving the very highest quality biodiesel and will minimize system plugging quality issues. ColdClear is effective for B100 and a range of diesel blends, meaning that producers, distributors or even fleet consumers of biodiesel blends can use it. The cartridges are disposable and easy to remove from the housings. Each housing holds three cartridges. The cartridges can be changed in minutes, which means very little downtime between production runs. Each bank of cartridges is rated to treat a fixed volume of B100 biodiesel, while biodiesel blends are scaled by the blend percentage. All housings have the option for test points installed in the base. The first housing can be equipped with a visual or electrical differential pressure indicator. Because differential pressure is not a relevant indicator of life for the cartridges in the latter two housings, an indicator is not offered for stage 2 & 3 housings. 70 SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION

73 ColdClear ColdClear is a three-stage system with all filters mounted in series on a single skid The first stage serves as a pre-filter and captures solid particulates down to three microns in size Stages 2 and 3 utilize custom design elements that combine new adsorption technologies with the proven effectiveness of Schroeder s high efficiency Excellement synthetic filtering media Multiple units can be employed in parallel to meet higher flow requirements The ColdClear System can be easily integrated into existing plant piping environments If multiple units are required, Schroeder Biofuels offers a range of monitoring options to ensure proper operation of the filter banks The essence of the ColdClear technology is the removal of crystallization precursors from the biodiesel or biodiesel blend. Therefore, knowing the exact flow rate of your system is essential for the ColdClear System to be properly sized and configured for a specific application. In-plant treatment of biodiesel (B100) to conform to ASTM standards prior to blending or shipment In-plant treatment of biodiesel blends (ex. B5, B10, etc) to ensure blended biodiesel meets or exceeds cold flow specifications For use in diesel fuel storage and distribution systems where B100 or biodiesel blends are stored and distributed to ensure shipped blends conform to ASTM specifications Large fleet terminals that have on-site diesel (and biodiesel blend) storage to ensure tight adherence to cold flow standards Unit must be wetted for at least 10 hours before use. 82 Test Kits A Patch Test Kit is an essential item to include in quality control for biodiesel production. Irrespective of the purification method employed, these kits will alert you to possible shortcomings in your production and purification processes. Biodiesel production is a game of infinite variables, and so is biodiesel purification. A small upstream problem, if undetected, could have disastrous consequences downstream. By analyzing fluid samples at various stages of the production and purification process, producers can now understand the constituent composition of all contaminants still present in the fuel. Once the contaminants have been identified, it is then that the source of the contaminant can be found and remedied. Contaminants could include soap, remaining production residues and possibly purification media (if incorrect filtration processes have been used). The kit enables instant visual analysis through an optical microscope of the major types of fuel contaminants. Biodiesel Mobile Lab Patch Test Kit Part Code: EPK-K: Description Biodiesel Mobile Lab - Patch Test Kit TCM TestMate Contamination Monitor Don t let the size of Schroeder s TestMate Contamination Monitor (TCM) fool you! It is among the newest generation of particle monitors that continuously measure solid contamination in fluid. Enclosed in a 4 inch diameter case, the TCM utilizes an optical sensor and measures particles in four sizes: >4, >6, >14 and >21 microns. *Please see the Filter Systems Catalog for drawings and complete sizing information. 80 SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION

83 Test Kits Electrical Connection TWS Accessory TestMate Water Sensor The TWS-C-E is a water and temperature sensor for the continuous monitoring of ester-based fuels (like biodiesel) accurately, continuously and online. It measures the water content relative to the saturation concentration (saturation point) and outputs the degree of saturation (saturation level) in the range of 0 to 100% as a 4-20 ma signal. A reading of 0% would indicate the absence of water, while a reading of 100% would indicate that a fluid is saturated with water. This connector is required to interface with the TWS. 86 Glossary 84 SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION

87 Glossary Explanation of the EN14214 and ASTM specifications listed on page 9 Acid Value Acid Value is a measure of mineral acids and free fatty acids contained in a fuel sample. The fewer residual compounds, the lower the acid value of the biodiesel. For biodiesel purified with Filtertechnik Filtration Systems, EN14104 is consistently achievable as is EN Acid number will also increase over time if the biodiesel is stored incorrectly. Acid value can be determined rapidly using a TAN (Total Acid Number) drop test. A sample of biodiesel is added to a red colored chemical reagent, and then another chemical is added until the color changes to green. The number of drops taken is easily converted to the Acid Number of the fuel (please see quality control section). Carbon Residue The Carbon Residue is the material left over after combusting fuel. Residual carbon is responsible for choking fuel injectors, so it is important to eliminate this. Eco 2 Pure and GlyceRx removes residual soaps and metals, which will lead to carbon residue. This is a PROVEN METHODOLOGY, which will lead to your product passing IP 13. Cetane Number Cetane Number is a measure of ignition quality. Fuels with low Cetane Numbers show increased emissions due to incomplete combustion. Palm oil and tallow derived biodiesel have higher Cetane Numbers. If you are using a feedstock which is not likely to pass EN ISO 5165 a Cetane boosting additive can be used. CFPP Under BS EN 116, the test for Cold Filter Plugging Point requires biodiesel to pass through a filter until it can no longer do so. On average, Rape Seed Oil has a CFPP of 6.8 F to 23 F ( -5 C to -14 C) whereas Palm Oil has a CFPP of around 50 F (10 C). This test shows that there is some sense in having shorter production chains in biodiesel manufacture as local crops are more suitable to local weather conditions for more of the year. Cloud point of biodiesel is also used as an indicator of cold temperature stability. The cloud point of the fuel is the temperature at which wax crystals first begin to form. Below this temperature, filters will start to become blocked and potentially starve the engine of fuel. Cloud point may be determined at the time of production using an electronic cloud point detector. A small sample (0.5 ml) of biodiesel is added to the device and the test runs automatically and unsupervised. The cloud point is reported on screen as a temperature. Copper Strip Corrosion This is defined as the likelihood to cause corrosion to copper, zinc and bronze parts of an engine (i.e. injector tips and common rail systems). Clean biodiesel gives consistently good results in this area, and is unlikely to fail EN ISO 2160 due to the low sulphur content. Density Biodiesel has higher density than mineral diesel. The denser biodiesel will characteristically sink to the bottom of the tank and this can lower fuel consumption, which is determined volumetrically; so the denser the fuel, the higher the consumption will be. Under laboratory conditions, density is tested to EN ISO 12185, which is on of 27 separate tests that combine to meet EN Density can be easily measured at the time of manufacture, using a simple hydrometer method. Laboratory results and the EN14214 standards report density at 15 C (59 F), so it is important that the result is corrected for temperature. Ester Content This test decides whether biodiesel is subject to the 20ppl rebate on road duties (current UK legislation). To pass EN14103, there must be a minimum ester transformation of 96.5% FFA s into Methyl Esters. This test is determined by good practice in upstream processes and ensuring a good reaction driven by heat and effective agitation. If there is not a sufficient reaction, then the levels of residuals of mono, di and triglycerides will be also out of specification. This suggests as they will remain untransformed, which will lead to missing EN14103 and EN14105 also. Good transformation and approved downstream purification are fundamental drivers to passing the EN specifications. SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION 85

88 Glossary Flash Point Flash Point is the lowest measure by which a liquid will ignite in air. The flash point with biodiesel should be low enough for it to be classified as non flammable and tested to ISO Purification with MAGNESOL is key to residual methanol removal to ensure safer working and storage conditions to biofuel producers and users alike. Flash Point can also be checked on site, using a portable Flash Point tester. A sample is heated to a given temperature, in a special enclosure. The lid is then opened and a pilot light is used to ignite any flammable vapor present. The flash is automatically detected and provides a simple pass/fail to the EN14214 specification. Glycerides It is vitally important that a good transesterification reaction is achieved. By achieving a transformation of more than 96.5% limits the amount of residual mono, di and triglyceride as per EN Failing to meet the specification, implies low conversion to ester and deposit formation on injectors and values. Group I Metals Sodium and Potassium are limited to a combined 5ppm. MAGNESOL s strong affinity with polar compounds enables the effective removal of residual traces of Sodium and Potassium, which can lead to levels exceeding the 5mg/kg upper limit required by EN Group II Metals Production deposits like Calcium and Magnesium sulphates (not to be confused with Magnesium Silicate) produce soaps, which are harmful to a fuel delivery system and will fail the test IP377. Schroeder Fuel Filtration Products can guarantee the total removal of MAGNESOL and other contaminants as per the Dallas Group s published performance data. Iodine Value Higher Iodine Values will have better cold properties whereas lower Iodine Values have poorer oxidative stability, therefore affecting storage stability over time. Iodine Value is determined by testing to EN Schroeder Fuel Filtration Systems remove production residues to which iodine is reactive. This is a test, which is determined by upstream processes, so due diligence throughout production is key to getting good results. Methanol Content A high Methanol Content means a lower flash point and dangerous storage instabilities. MAGNESOL is the only product that has published performance data for residual methanol recovery, and that ensures conformity to EN14110, which will lead to passing EN Oxidation Stability This property relates to the overall storage stability of the fuel. The higher the degree of unsaturation (double bonds) within the FAME molecules gives a decrease in oxidative stability, which means that the longer it is stored, the greater the reduction in quality will be. Tests have shown that Eco 2 Pure and GlyceRx can extend the product life of biodiesel via the removal of moisture, mono, di and triglycerides. Phosphorous Content This is to test for left over phosphor used in feedstock production and refining. Removal of production residues and chemicals to pass EN14107 and also across the specification of standards which combine to meet EN Sulphated Ash Similar to carbon residue, Sulphated Ash content is tested by taking a sample of biodiesel and combusting it, and then weighing the residual non-combustible mineral ash under specifications to EN ISO Production residues can be removed using Schroeder Fuel Filtration Purification Systems. Sulphur Content Sulphur emissions are harmful to human health and emissions make Sulphur Dioxide, which is indicative of acid rain. The sulphur content test BS EN ISO is difficult to pass using overused waste oils. Without this part of the specification, your product will not meet EN SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION

89 Glossary Total Contamination Because production contaminants like residues and soaps can still be present in the purification stage of making biodiesel, the use of Schroeder Fuel Filtration final polishing makes achieving total contamination to EN12662 the best way to ensure the total removal of production residues, which means clean fuel and peace of mind. Viscosity Viscosity of biodiesel is higher than mineral diesel, which can lead to problems in fuel delivery systems. High viscosity can lead to poor combustion, which leads to coking of injector tips and engine power loss. Viscosity decreases with unsaturation but increases with the presence of mono, di or triglycerides. Lower viscosity can also indicate the presence of methanol in the biodiesel, which can be confirmed by measuring flash point (the lower the flash point, the more methanol is present). The removal of glycerides by Schroeder Fuel Filtration Systems means that purified biodiesel has increased flow capabilities, which is beneficial during wintertime. Viscosity is subject to EN ISO 3104, which Schroeder Fuel Filtration Purification Systems can achieve. Viscosity can be check on-site, using a falling ball viscometer. This test consists of a precision tube, filled with the sample biodiesel, and then a ball is timed as it falls a set distance through the fuel. The time taken is converted to viscosity (Please see quality control section). Water Content EN ISO specifies a maximum of 500 ppm (parts per million) of water in biodiesel. As FAME is hygroscopic, it can pick up water in storage. Because of this, there can be problems meeting the specification. At around 1500 ppm, the solubility limit is reached and the water becomes visible. Producers still using traditional wet wash systems may find this aspect of the EN specification rather troublesome to achieve. Free water promotes biological growth and adverse reaction to transesterification, which undoes biodiesel back into Free Fatty Acids. This is disastrous in a fuel delivery system. The published performance data of MAGNESOL shows that published performance data shows that a sample of FAME with 7000 mg/kg of water in an initial sample was reduced to 50 mg/kg. This is 10% of the upper limits of EN ISO which requires 500 mg/kg of water. SCHROEDER INDUSTRIES FUEL FILTRATION 87
