The higher the octane number, the more compression the fuel can withstand before detonating. 9 Threat of E-15 Fuel Causes Concerns for OEMs E-15 is a product that simply does not belong in the marketplace, said Rep. James Sensenbrenner, after talking to the OEMs. WASHINGTON A dozen domestic and foreign automakers are raising concerns over damage that could be caused by gasoline containing 15% ethanol, which the Environmental Protection Agency plans to allow at U.S. gas pumps. The OEMs sent letters to Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., warning that the blend may damage engines and fuel supply systems and possibly void vehicle warranties. The EPA has released its warning sticker for E15 gasoline a final step before the higher blend can be cleared for sale in the United States. -Aaron Kessler (July 2011) The automakers who have responded so far with concerns are Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes- Benz, Toyota, Nissan, Volkswagen, Volvo, Hyundai, Kia and BMW. 9

WHAT TOYOTA'S GAS CAP SAYS On 2012 models, the cap says "Up to E10 Gasoline Only." E10 is 10 percent ethanol, the standard blend now sold. Toyota says E15 is unsuitable for earlier models, though their gas caps don't say so. WHAT FORD VEHICLES SAY Ford vehicles advise using E10, with no mention of E15. The message was meant to warn motorists against using high-ethanol blends designed for flexible-fuel vehicles; Ford said it may revise it to address E15. 14 Ethanol Blended Fuel Issues - Water / Moisture Issues Phase Separation Ethanol molecules have a stronger bond to water molecules than to gasoline molecules. When water is added to Ethanol Blended fuel, the bond between the ethanol and gasoline will weaken. Can occur when only.005% (4 teaspoons) water per gallon of fuel is absorbed Water is attracted to the fuel tank by the ethanol blended in the fuel and separates from the gasoline creating a layer of water at the bottom of the tank Fuel for the engine is drawn from the bottom of the tank. Causing the engine to not run properly, if at all on the ethanol and water. 20 Storing the fuel tank empty is not a viable option Ethanol being a solvent (strong cleaner) that will strip away dirt, rust or sediment from within the fuel delivery system. Impossible to drain fuel completely from the system Enough fuel will remain in the system to gum up the engine Draining fuel exposes the fuel system to air and moisture that can cause rust and corrosion Gaskets and seals may dry-out and crack leading to leaks when refilled Difficult to dispose of fuel in an environmentally safe manner. Better solution Fill the tank 95% full with fresh fuel and treat with STA-BIL or STA-BIL Ethanol Treatment Prior to storage, run the engine for 5 minutes to treat entire fuel system.
