1 Density Column Material Density Determination The Davenport two column density measuring apparatus is designed to measure the density of solid materials, notably plastics, by the technique described in BS2782 Part 6: Method 620D, ASTM D , ISO 1183 and others. It is also a quick comparative test, ideal for discerning differences between similar materials. A linear liquid density gradient is fitted in a cylindrical glass tube and maintained at 23 C to prevent the gradient being disturbed by thermal convection. Temperature control circuits work in conjunction with electric heaters and a simple cooling coil to maintain accuracy. The density gradient obtained is determined by introducing a set (usually nine) of accurately calibrated market floats whose densities cover the desired range of the column at equal density intervals. The floats provide not only the calibration reference values of the gradient, but also act as a check on the stability of the density gradient. Samples placed in the column will sink until they reach liquid of their own density. The relative position of specimens is detemined by the graduations on the side of the column. Back illumination of the columns improves visibility of the precise sample position. The Davenport apparatus is equipped so that column tubes are filled in situ as simply as possible. 3 Melt Flow Indexer MFI-9 The Davenport MFI-9 melt flow indexer is used to determine the melt flow rate of a polymer by extruding it in a molten state through a calibrated die using a reference weight. The MFI-9 is a competitively priced product, which achieves high accuracy, repeatability and reproducibility of results. The instrument is ideal for low volume users who require the same quality machine as larger corporations. This independent, stand alone system contains its own embedded software. It can be set up with up to five standard test set ups, which can be recalled instantly at the press of a button. All test procedures run sequentially, with the machine providing audible prompts to guide the user. All test set ups and calibration files can be protected by a supervisor, or embedded at our factory during installation, making it a switch on ond go system. For users who test corrosive materials such as PVC or abrasive materials such as glass filled materials, we also offer the Davenport MFI-9 with a tungsten carbide corrosive resistant barrel and pistons. 5 Melt Flow Indexer MFI-10 The Davenport MFI-10 melt flow indexer is used to determine the melt flow rate of a polymer by extruding it in a molten state through a calibrated die using a reference weight. The MFI-10 is an intelligent, modular system, which offers flexibility of testing and increased automation. The main base unit can be configured for either manual or fully automatic testing. For those who use the same machine for a given test, a standard test set up may be saved and password protected. Those doing several different tests may save up to 10 set ups and recall them by name. Operators need not be experienced. The backlit LCD gives written instructions at each step with audible prompts at the correct time and results calculated and displayed at the end of the test. 7 PETPlus Test Instrument For The Intrinsic Viscosity (IV) Measurement of PET Polymers The Davenport PETPlus from Lloyd Instruments is a unique test instrument designed for the safe solvent-free intrinsic viscosity (IV) measurement of moisture-sensitive polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It can be operated in stand alone mode or used with our powerful data analysis software package NEXYGENPlus PET. Most instruments available for determining IV use the solvent method of testing. However, not only is this method expensive, but critically it involves the handling and disposal of toxic solvents. The Davenport PETPlus test instrument by contrast offers significant cost and environmental benefits using a non-solvent method, which is kinder to the environment, and saves on the high cost of purchase and disposal of solvents. Unlike other IV measurement instruments, the PETPlus can test polymers at virtually all stages of the process: from incoming resin, powder, dry granules, molten polymer, preforms, PET bottles, films and even re-ground material, thereby eliminating scrap. Tests can be completed in less than 20 minutes. Rapid testing at the different stages can be carried out using ancillary equipment for controlled sample collection and preparation. The instrument's compact construction occupies significantly less bench space than earlier models and makes it easier and quicker to load samples. The microprocessor controlled stand-alone system provides high accuracy measurements, temperature control to ±0.1 C and storage of up to 600 test results. A backlit LCD displays instructions for the test in a variety of languages as well as the results. An RS-232 interface allows connection to a computer for fully automated software control and/or downloading of results. Molten PET is extruded through a calibrated die by nitrogen gas under pressure and the LVDT probe movement against time is recorded and displayed. The system measures the optimum flow rate and calculates intrinsic viscosity. The PETPlus also measures the degradation factor and provides the mean and standard deviation for the batch.
