Every year begins with a similar tone of optimism, then challenges each grower s patience with the frenetic demands of planting, fertilizing and spraying, only to have to endure whatever the weather bestows upon them and their crops before anxiously heading to the fields at harvest. Still, somewhere in the pattern of all that is considered routine about farming, the seed and traits industries continue to demand an educational requirement that is constantly changing. With each new growing season, there are more corn hybrids in the fields and on the horizon, with more traits and innovations that provide greater protection, reduce a grower s risk or add value to the bottom line. Likewise, there is a wealth of new soybean technologies set to arrive in fields, with properties that go far beyond herbicide tolerance. That is why at Top rop Manager, we provide you with our annual Traits and Stewardship Guide, as much a useful information resource as it is a reflection of the extent to which the industry is changing. In our 2010 edition, there were 26 entries for corn and 10 for soybeans; this year s Traits and Stewardship Guide provides insight into a total of 49 entries 36 for corn and 13 for soybeans. That represents a one-year increase of more than 40 percent, and that is a sign of growth in the industry. Another change you will notice is that we have dropped the orn Hybrid Refuge Matrix, in large part due to the growth in the number of traits, but also as an indication of how fast the Refuge in a Bag technology is growing.
