2 The mobile FCM fuel consumption meter Measurement of fuel consumption for mobile automotive measurement technology For billing to the nearest litre, training sessions, driver training, vehicle comparison tests etc. The FCM is a fuel consumption meter developed to be installed in vehicles and stationary engines, and is the product of many years of experience spent developing semimobile fuel consumption meters for our performance test stands. It is also usable with all injection systems currently available on the market. This measurement unit is suitable for diesel engines up to 365 kw/around 500 HP. The scope can optionally be extended up to 1840 kw/around 2500 HP, although precise measurement for engines under 200 HP is not possible in this case. The measurement is made using an oval wheel meter with precision of under 1%.

3 Advantages The measuring device consists of a stable aluminium housing and can be installed right next to the engine. It is advisable to mount the device on rubber dampers, however, to minimise vibrations as much as possible. When used in various vehicles, the FCM can be equipped with quick-action couplers, to ensure swift and problem-free exchange. 4 Fig. 2 Fig. 3 The display (Fig. 2) can be positioned freely as desired within the driver s cabin and indicates the current consumption in l/h. This real-time display encourages the driver to ensure the engine is operating within the optimal working range, which in turn will lead to a marked reduction in fuel consumption. The display can also be switched to show the total consumption of the machine, all of which facilitates precise billing of the diesel consumed. When using the optional storage facility (Fig. 3), the consumption figures are recorded over a longer period and can subsequently be sorted on any PC using Excel software. The driver can also start a new measurement at the touch of a button, allowing consumption to be stored per work order or customer, which is a particularly appealing option for contractors wishing to calculate diesel consumption. When using a display with a memory card, the engine speed can also be entered and recorded and during the later evaluation, this means more accurate conclusions can be drawn concerning the performance of the driver. Speed is reduced either via the terminal W on the alternator or a separate speed sensor that is positioned on the engine s V-belt pulley, where the screw heads of the belt pulley fixture are scanned. 7 For training purposes For training purposes, the FCM can also be supplied with a radio link. In this case, the measured data, such as consumption in [l/h] and speed in [1/min] are sent via the in-vehicle radio transmitter to the radio receiver on the computer. Specially developed dedicated evaluation software then records this data, which can then be saved and printed out. This facilitates subsequent analysis of the data with the driver, and any driving errors can be pointed out to the latter. Based on experience, training using this system has achieved driver saving potential exceeding 20%, simply by applying appropriate driving methods. The radio link range is around 4000 m in open spaces, allowing realistic deployment of the machines.
