2 Shipdex events >> MAN Diesel Academy Augsburg (D), February 16 th, 2010 The 4 th Shipdex Conference Shipdex Sets the Standard New data protocol declared ready and available The 4th Shipdex Conference took place at the MAN Diesel PrimeServ Academy in Augsburg, Germany on 16 February, where the Shipdex protocol was declared ready and available for use. Shipdex (Ship Data Exchange) is international business rules (protocol)-based and fully compliant with S1000D, developed to standardise the exchange of electronic technical data within the shipping community. The Shipdex protocol aims to ensure a high quality of technical and logistical data and simplify the exchange of data within the industry. For application service providers, Shipdex is a basic specification for implementing data interfaces from technical manual solutions to maintenance and purchase or any fully fledged ERP systems. The purpose of the Augsburg event was to bring together the different sub-groups of the European maritime industry and show the milestones reached during the development of a solution to the long-standing industry challenge regarding paper manuals, namely the on-board availability of correct maintenance data. On the day, there were over 100 attendees, including owners, classification societies, shipyards, equipment makers and software providers of maintenance systems. Speakers included Shipdex founding members Grimaldi Group, Intership Navigation, MacGregor (as part of the Cargotec Group), Alfa Laval, SpecTec and MAN Diesel, as well as Rolls Royce Marine, Gemanischer Lloyd, United Arab Shipping Company, Corena and the S1000D Council. Promising, concrete signs of the new protocol s acceptance were also revealed in a series of announcements that: MAN Diesel is ready to deliver manuals in Shipdex format MacGregor Cranes will shortly be ready to deliver manuals in Shipdex format and MacGregor RoRo and MacGregor Hatch Cover will follow SpecTec is offering their Shipdex-compliant CMMS, the AMOS Business Suite Shipowners are ordering Shipdex data for their new building projects United Arab Shipping Company has announced that it has requested Shipdex datasets for nine coming newbuildings Germanischer Lloyd is exploring the possibilities of using Shipdex in its customer communication and approval processes Rolls-Royce Marine has become a registered member of the Shipdex community Page 2
3 Setting the standard InterManager, the international trade association for ship managers that represents a fleet of over 1,000 ships globally, was represented in Germany by Alexandre Albertini, who said: InterManager is showing great interest in Shipdex as additional proof of the positive moves the shipping industry is making towards selfregulation and improved governance. InterManager is interested in discussing the project further and checking the interest of its members in such a standardisation initiative. Henrik Striboldt, Business Development Manager at MAN Diesel PrimeServ representing Shipdex, said: Today s declaration of the Shipdex protocol as a viable means of universal data exchange within the marine industry marks a significant milestone. We have already gotten off to an excellent start with its acceptance by some of the key players within the industry, and I predict its widespread adoption in the near future. Shipdex is an independent standard and is open to all members of the maritime industry. As such, anyone can become a Shipdex member, simply by registering at www. shipdex.com, and all contributions to improving the Shipdex protocol and the exchange of data are encouraged. 5 Shipdex members news >> Naples (IT), April 5 th, 2010 Grimaldi announces the Grimaldi-Finnlines Shipdex project Grimaldi Compagnia di Navigazione s.p.a Grimaldi Group announced to have launched the First Shipdex Ship project on 5 Finnlines sister ships already in service. This project will allow to collect all the technical information relevant to all installed equipments on-board the 5 Star class Vessels and to convert all of them into Shipdex format. The Shipdex datasets will be automatically imported into the Grimaldi AMOS Business Suite installation in the office and on-board of every single vessel. This will be the first step in building a Grimaldi Group Common Source Database for all the Grimaldi Group fleet in order to have available on line all the technical information relevant to the 100 vessels actually in service and for the 25 New Building actually on development. The same Shipdex datasets will be used to build new technical manuals as well. >> Copenhagen (DK), April 19 th, 2010 MAN Diesel & Turbo receives Shipdex orders >> Copenhagen (DK), April 19 th, 2010 Marine Equipment Makers Day in Copenhagen Q4-201 Following the Shipdex Conference in Augsburg 16th February, a number of ship owners have contacted MAN Diesel & Turbo for delivery of Shipdex maintenance data. The majority of the ship owners seek data for their new buildings, but there is also interest from owners planning to retrofit vessels with new maintenance systems (CMMS). However, with some ship owners the dialog has stopped short because their CMMS is not Shipdex compliant. Says Henrik Striboldt, Business Development Manager at MAN Diesel & Turbo. We would be more than happy to deliver high quality maintenance data in Shipdex format to our customers, allowing them to maximize their benefit from operating our products - so we recognize a need for more CMMS companies to upgrade their software to become Shipdex compliant. MAN Diesel & Turbo is planning an initiative to bring together members of marine equipment makers associations in the northern European region. The venue will be Q at MAN Diesel & Turbo premises in Copenhagen. The purpose of this gathering is to inform about the Shipdex protocol, including the present status from the Shipdex community. On the day MAN Diesel & Turbo will be among the companies who will share experiences and lessons learned, in order to help other equipment makers jump the Shipdex wagon. Page 5
6 >> Limassol (CY), April 28 th, 2010 First Shipdex contract at Intership Navigation Co. Ltd Intership Navigation Co. Ltd. Intership Navigation Co. Ltd has successfully entered into a contract with MAN Diesel & Turbo for delivery of technical documentation according to Shipdex specification for a number of vessels. MAN Diesel & Turbo will create hull specific Shipdex datasets for 6 sister vessels equipped with 6 S40ME-B engines, and another 2 sister ships equipped with 6S70MC-6 engines. Our intention is to use Shipdex data not only to populate our Computerised Planned Maintenance System, but also to initiate building of our electronic technical documentation database, and a repository of technical information (CSDB). We plan to use Spectec AMOS Shipdex Suite components to build and then view and search technical documentation in the form of IETP, both in the office and on board of the vessels. We are really excited and having big hopes as to the results of the project, especially that the initial preparation phase that we have conducted together with MAN Diesel & Turbo has shown again, that handling and availability of precise technical information/ manuals is still something that shipping industry is struggling with a lot! We believe that wide acceptance of Shipdex as a quality and delivery tool could bring a very significant improvement in this respect. 12 About Shipdex Shipdex Purpose Shipdex is the International Business Rules (The Shipdex Protocol) developed to standardise the production and the exchange of technical and logistic data within the shipping community. The Shipdex Protocol applies to the S1000D International Specification for technical publication utilising a common source database at issue 2.3. S1000D ( is sponsored by: ASD - AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe AIA - Aerospace Industries Association of America ATA - Air Transport Association Terms of Use regarding to S1000D are strictly observed by the Shipdex Protocol. The Shipdex Protocol stands for Business Rules and Technical Specifications to assure a high quality of technical and logistics data and the data exchange between Ship-owners, Shipyards, Manufacturers, Classification Societies and Application Service Providers. For Application Service Providers it is a basic specification to implement data interfaces from Technical Manuals Solutions to Maintenance and Purchase Systems. Shipdex Scope The Shipdex Protocol covers technical data exchange in any sea project which wishes to adopt it. The Shipdex Protocol applies to the S1000D to exchange data in a neutral and standardised format. This means that it can be implemented by anyone on different Information Technology systems. This feature, along with the concept of modularisation, makes Shipdex Protocol acceptable to the international shipping community. Information produced in accordance with Shipdex Protocol is achieved in a modular form, called a data module, which is defined as the smallest self contained information unit within a Shipdex data set. Shipdex Protocol defines data modules as containers for data exchange. Each manufacturer shall develop data modules on the basis of: the Product breakdown in a given configuration the relevant maintenance policy All data modules should be collected in dedicated libraries and supplied to relevant customers including ship configuration information supplied by manufacturers (equipment Part Number and Serial Numbers) and shipyards/ship-owners (Ship Identification and Functional location codes).
