Our Fuel Specialties business has been at the forefront of developing innovative fuel additive solutions for many years, working closely with refiners to ensure their products meet specification cost-effectively. Innospec s rapidly expanding Fuel Specialties business is comprised of a number of dedicated teams. The Refinery Specialties team supplies refinery fuel additives and provides application expertise to customers all over the world. Innospec also has similar teams serving the needs of the marine, power, heating oil and performance specialties markets. Refineries today have to process crude oil from many different sources and produce fuels that vary considerably depending on geographic location. The worldwide trend toward Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) has also created a unique set of problems for the refiner as well as the fuel distributor and retail outlet. 5 Refinery Specialties 5 Fuel additives that solve refinery problems Innospec has over 60 years experience in developing, manufacturing and marketing refinery fuel additives for a wide range of applications. Our product range is continually evolving as we develop more robust and innovative additive solutions to meet our customers needs. We can draw on our past experience of similar problems as well as our extensive technical resources to formulate additives that work most cost-effectively. Wherever fuel is stored or distributed, there is a risk of corrosion caused by the trace amounts of water picked up by the fuel during processing and storage. We market a range of corrosion inhibitors to combat such problems in pipelines, tankfarms and terminals. These additives are surface active molecules which attach to the metal surface and repel water. The widespread use of fuel oxygenates and caustic has increased the need for innovative corrosion inhibitors. Our products also provide refiners with the flexibility to meet ever-changing fuel specifications and improve refinery economics. For example, our conventional 2-ethylhexyl nitrate cetane number improver can be used to upgrade the value of low cetane refinery blend stocks e.g. LCO. In addition, Innospec offers a di-tertiary butyl peroxide cetane number improver that will increase cetane number without increasing nitrogen content. These compounds readily decompose to generate free radicals that enhance the initiation of combustion. By using Innospec cetane number improvers, refiners can not only meet the required specification but also produce diesel fuels that deliver better engine performance and lower levels of regulated exhaust emissions. Changes in crude oil quality, fuel specifications and refining requirements have also presented a major challenge when it comes to the low temperature performance of diesel fuel. Refiners use our cold flow improvers to achieve the required pour point specifications. Refiners often face problems with fuel stability. That s why our FOA range of antioxidants, fuel stabilizers, dispersants and metal deactivators are designed to meet the needs of today s fuels. Antioxidants retard the formation of gums, insoluble residues and color bodies. Metal deactivators help stabilize fuels when naturally occurring acid compounds catalyze undesirable reactions with certain metals during fuel distribution and storage. Safety must always be the top priority in the transfer, mixing and loading of distillate fuels and solvents. Our conductivity improvers prevent the build up of electrostatic charge, minimizing the risk of fire and explosion. Stadis 450 is renowned worldwide and is the only static dissipator additive internationally approved for use in aviation fuels.
