1 64 C. Registrant & Patient Data The following tables include statistics for MSP registrants and patients. Registrants are B.C. residents who are registered with MSP. Patients are registrants who received fee-for-service services covered by MSP during the fiscal year. The analysis includes counts by age group, gender and geographic area. Additional analysis of B.C. patients examines expenditure and services provided. The following criteria are applied in addition to those listed in the Methodology section. Registrant Counts Registrants are counted once per fiscal year using the following criteria: Registrants must have at least one day of MSP coverage within a fiscal year Registrants with unknown gender and age are redistributed into gender categories and age groups based on the breakdown of the registrants with known gender and age Patient Counts Patients are counted once per fiscal year using the following criteria: Patients must be registered with MSP Patients must have received services from practitioners registered with MSP Patients must have received services with total payments to practitioners greater than 0 (zero) dollars within the fiscal year Patients are assigned to the LHA where payments for most services were received in the fiscal year. The patient s address is used as a proxy for location Patients with unknown LHA are assigned to LHA Unknown, HSDA Unknown or HA Unknown where appropriate Patients are assigned to one age group and gender per fiscal year based on their age group and gender with the highest total payments Patients with unknown gender and age are redistributed into gender categories and age groups based on the breakdown of the patients with known gender and age Specialty The term specialty, used in Tables 11-1 to 11-3 and 16-1 to 16-3, is the practitioner s specialty and is associated with a specialty code on the processed claim.
