1 Name: Electromagnetism case studies This handout includes: 1. four case studies of electromagnetism in our daily lives 2. a graphic organizer where your group can summarize what you have learned for each of the four case studies Once you re in your groups, each group member will focus on a different case study. Read and review your assigned case study independently. After each member of your group has finished reading their case study, summarize your case study to the rest of the group by answering the following questions and completing the graphic organizer: How does the case study involve the electromagnetic force? What are some places in your community where each application might be found? What are two or three interesting things your group has learned from the case studies? Page 1 of 6

2 Case study 1: Hydroelectric generator Coils Magnets Turbine Penstock Key features of a hydroelectric generator converts the potential energy from water into electric energy water stored behind a dam holds a large amount of potential energy water moves through a penstock (large pipe) to a turbine which spins quickly as the water passes through How is it used in our turbine is connected to a rotor that has a large magnet; when the rotor spins, the energy is transformed into electric energy by a stator, which is a series of metal wires used to collect electric energy produces large amounts of electricity which is distributed to communities electricity is used to power our electronics, home appliances, lights, etc. Where can you find it? in hydroelectric dams throughout British Columbia, such as the Corra Linn, Upper and Lower Bonnington Dams on the Kootenay River What are some the Corra Linn and Upper and Lower Bonnington Dams provide interesting features? hydroelectric power in south central British Columbia over 87% of the electricity produced in British Columbia is generated through hydroelectric dams Page 2 of 6

3 Case study 2: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner Magnets Coils Scanner Key features of an MRI scanner allows different layers of an object to be seen used in medicine to scan and form images of the human body beneath the skin shows both bones and organs a large metal coil surrounds an electrical circuit and creates a strong magnetic force magnetic force attracts the electrons within the cells of the human body causing them to vibrate How is it used in our MRI detects the vibrating electrons and produces a 3D image of the scanned area of the body MRI scanners are used to produce an image of the human body beneath the skin allows medical professionals to investigate what might be causing a patient to feel sick or in pain provides more and different information than an x-ray Where can you find it? hospitals and health clinics What are some provides information medical professionals can use to identify a interesting features? wide range of health issues, ranging from small problems such as an ear infection to more complex issues such as tumors, spinal cord injuries, or even neurological (nerve) disorders metal coil is made from thin copper and aluminum wires Page 3 of 6

4 Case study 3: Loudspeakers Cone Wire coils Magnet Key features of a loudspeaker a device that converts electrical current into a vibration our ears can hear as sound a magnet surrounded by a metal coil as the electric current moves through the coil, it fluctuates between a negative and positive magnetic charge the quickly fluctuating magnetic charge moves the coil back and forth at a fast pace, causing the diaphragm to vibrate and create a sound transforms an electric signal, such as an audio file, into sound our ears can hear How is it used in our listening to music, making announcements in schools and other buildings, and even watching television or live sports Where can you find it? in most televisions, headphones, schools, hospitals, sports arenas and music venues What are some What are some interesting features? by changing the size and interesting features? shape of the cone, audio engineers can change the types of sounds that loudspeakers play (e.g. woofers have deep cones that amplify low sounds) the air around them resonates and amplifies the sound Page 4 of 6

5 Case study 4: Electromagnetic crane Key features of an electromagnetic crane a crane with a large metal disc with copper wire wrapped around it; it uses an electromagnet to move metal objects an electric current to the copper wire can be turned on and off when the electric current is on, the large metal disc becomes a powerful magnet the disc is lowered to the metal objects to be moved, then electricity switched on when the electricity turns off, the disc is no longer magnetized and the objects fall off the disc How is it used in our moves large amounts of metal easily from one place to another separates metals from garbage Where can you find it? recycling facilities and scrap yards What are some electromagnetic cranes are so powerful they can pick up a car interesting features? electromagnetic cranes can turn the magnetism on and off electromagnets can be 20 times stronger than permanent magnets strength of the electromagnet can be adjusted Page 5 of 6
