2 Light Laboratory LIGHTING Most installers just want a reliable LED product that will do exactly what it says on the box QUALITY CONTROL PE takes a closer look at the quality testing carried out at Integral LED s Light Lab. LED lighting can be a hard market to navigate. With so many companies making claims of quality, it can be difficult to know which ones to trust. You only have to check a few online retailers to find companies who are trying to take advantage of the increasing popularity of LEDs by flogging poor quality imported products for rock-bottom prices. If you are sourcing a white box product then you can expect problems down the line. However if you pay premium, from a reputable company, it s only right that a product does what it says it will on the box. In control Product quality is the chief concern at Integral LED, which is why the company invested in its light laboratory in April 2013 as a means of ensuring the products they deliver to the U market are up to standard. Of all the testing procedures carried out in the lab, the most important are the quality checks performed by the two integrating spheres. The spheres are a means of measuring the strength of a light source. A lighting product is illuminated inside a closed sphere to start the test. The inside of each sphere is covered with a precise, reflective coating which diffuses light. Like a drop of water, the light hits the surface of the sphere and spreads evenly, allowing for accurate measurements to be taken. Detecting equipment inside the sphere measures the strength of the light source sending constant data to the engineers in the lab for the duration of the test. The lab conducts around 50 tests a day in the spheres, covering about 20 lines a week. All lamps are preheated before entering the sphere and the sensors inside are regularly calibrated to ensure a consistent comparative measurement in all tests. While the spheres verify the light quality of the products, the lab technicians run several other tests to check the products capabilities, including longevity and dimming ability. Technicians regularly check the thermal output of lamps in use to make sure they don t over heat. The lab also has a dimming rig check how the products fare with some of the most used dimming systems in the U. Technicians can monitor how effectively each lamp dims, look out for flicker and compare the results from increasing and decreasing the load. For a relatively small company, reputation is vitally important. 7 LED Lamps Wollaton Hall A Modern solution for a Stately Home Stately homes are a legacy of the U s proud history; a reminder of our rich past. However in an era of budget cuts in the public sector, national and local government are keen to find practical ways of reducing expenditure. Wollaton Hall in Nottingham is an example of how historic buildings can embrace the costsaving benefits of solid state lighting at mainstream prices. Wollaton Hall was commissioned in 1580 by Robert Smythson, the same architect that created Longleat House and Hardwick Hall. The Elizabethan building now houses a museum of natural history and an industrial museum in its extensive outbuildings. With over 30 chandeliers, lighting makes up a major part of Wollaton Hall s energy bill. Additionally, the weekly toll of failing conventional lamps was a costly burden on the maintenance budget. Better known for their commitment to preserving the past, the staff at the Hall worked with Nottingham City Council s energy team to investigate the latest lighting technology to save money on the Hall s electricity bill and to cut its carbon emissions. Operations Manager at Wollaton Hall, Mo Allahi explained: We are conscious of the environmental impact that running a large building can have. 14 LED Lamps SEE REAL COLOUR Real colour is the new frontier for LED Lighting Among our many goals at Integral LED, delivering colour vibrancy for our customers is a current target. Once the domain of the specialist lighting luminaire realistic colour was an expensive option reserved for high-end retailers and other premium interiors. Over the last year, our laboratory (and partner) research and development has delivered affordable LED spotlights and non-directional lamps with high colour accuracy that is available for all budgets. Compared to halogen and other legacy light sources, LED has struggled to match other lighting technology in the rendering of certain colours. This shortcoming is particularly marked in LED lamps that have a rating of under 80. Until recently, interiors that demanded an accurate representation of colours relied upon costly LED luminaires that deliver a of 90 plus. Applications in retail, such as the display of fresh fruit and vegetables and in the merchandising of fashion garments have relied upon these expensive lighting solutions or have retained their loyalty for metal halide or tungsten. The breakthrough has been engineered using a single COB (Chip-on-Board) chip that has enabled improved colour performance. 40 LED Panels Case Study: Integral LED helps one business to save 390,000 over 5 years One of the biggest success stories from Integral LED so far is Convergys, Belfast. By switching their lighting setup to Integral LED, this leading provider of Customer Management solutions is able to make massive savings on their yearly energy cost while greatly improving the environment for 2,500 staff over two sites. One of the primary reasons Convergys opted for Integral LED was the High Performance+ panels, which deliver 4000 illumination for 25W (140/W) of power. Far more efficient than the 70W that was required to drive the original strip light luminaires. The financial benefits of the refurbished lighting scheme were clear, of the 101,000 it cost to power the existing lighting scheme, overheads would be reduced by 77% to 23,000. Additionally, the refurbishment project was funded by an application for an ECA grant. The government backed scheme provides interest-free loans for the purpose of financing carbon reducing technology including LED lighting. The resultant 213,498 g reduction in carbon emissions all but covered the outlay to purchase and install the lights. I can say that the forecast will be achieved which matches the financial goals of the project, says Peter Corr, Facilities Manager Convergys, Belfast, however the less tangible benefits of the switch to LED have been a distinct too; improvement in staff working conditions and a real boost in employee motivation is acknowledged across the two office sites. The project has sparked change across the business.
