1 Pack 196 Pine Wood Derby Car Standards Material Race cars shall be constructed for this event from the parts contained in the Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit. The use of pre-shaped car bodies, machined wheels or axles is NOT allowed. Weight Racecars may weigh no more than five (5) ounces (total weight) as determined on the official scales during the prerace check-in. Wheels and Axles The car shall roll on the wheels from the kit. The wheels shall turn about the axle nails from the kit. The axle nails shall be firmly affixed to the wood of the car body. The Cub may cut new axle slots (or drill new axle holes) in the original block from the kit. The original axle-to-axle spacing of 4.40" (±0.125" (1/8)) must, however, be maintained. It must be obvious to the judges that the original groove spacing, wheels, and the nails from the kit are being used. Axle nails must be mounted parallel to the track surface. Tilted or canted axles that cause the car to run on the edge of the wheels are not allowed. Wheels must run flat on the track surface. At least three wheels must be in contact with the track surface at all times as the car rolls. Size Cars may be no longer than 7.00 inches with a maximum width of 2.75 (2¾) inches and a maximum height of 3.75 inches as determined by the official gages during the Registration and Inspection process. Underside clearance of at least (3/8) inches and inside wheel to wheel clearance of at least 1.75 (1¾) inches is required to allow the car to clear the racetrack's center guide-strip. Adequate clearance is the responsibility of the racecar builder. Weights and Attachment Weight may be added to the car and will be considered part of the car for purposes of all measurements. All weight must be securely fastened to the car, e.g. by permanent glue, nails or screws, but not by "sticky substances", e.g. tape, or tack spray. Weights shall be passive, i.e. non-moveable, non-magnetic, non-electric, non-sticky, etc. Lubricants Only dry lubricants such as graphite or powdered Teflon "white lube" will be allowed for lubricating the wheels. Lubricants may not foul the track. 2 Job Duties The Pinewood Race Master: You are in charge of the official racing along the track. You set up the cars, check with the Pinewood Race Keeper, Initiate the count down and verify the cars are being picked up at the end of the track. You work with the MC to announce the cars with numbers and names and are the main Judge when it comes to issues on the track and the race. You need to show up early to help set up the track and coordinate with the Pinewood Race Keeper, the Pinewood Car Keeper, and the Runner (who shows up later). You are also expected to help set up the safety line (blue tape on ground & maybe small cones) that keeps the audience and racers back and help enforce the clearance. There is no jumping over the track and stepping over is discouraged. You are also responsible to help break down the track and transport it back to the vehicle which brought it. The Pinewood Race Keeper: You are in charge of the program that tracks the race. This program has changed over the past, but currently we are using Race Grandprix Race Manager. You are also responsible in providing a tentative list (we never know which scouts will be there and which won't) to the Pinewood Race Master, Pinewood Car Keeper, Pinewood Weigh-In Supervisor, MC and an extra or two. You need to show up early to help set up the track and coordinate with the Pinewood Race Master, the Pinewood Car Keeper, and the Runner (who shows up later). You are also expected to help set up the safety line (blue tape on ground & maybe small cones) that keeps the audience and racers back and help enforce the clearance. There is no jumping over the track and stepping over is discouraged. You are also responsible to help break down the track and transport it back to the vehicle which brought it. The Pinewood Car Keeper:

3 You are responsible for table(s) that house the weighed-in Pinewood Derby Cars. You need to setup the table with some kind of car designation layout (Usually with blue tape and a Sharpie). You also need to setup some type of method of keeping the cars from rolling about or off the table when bumped. You need to make sure that all cars are not touched or taken by builders or parents until after the racing heats are complete. You also need to check the cars as they are returned to make sure they are still functional. Sometimes cars will be adjusted during the race and may need to be fixed. At this time, you need to contact the racers and have that person take the car over to the car clinic to be repaired. You need to show up early to help set up the track and coordinate with the Pinewood Race Master, the Weigh-In Supervisor, and the Runner (who shows up later). You are also responsible to help break down the track and transport it back to the vehicle which brought it. The Pinewood Runner: You are responsible for transporting the Pinewood Derby Cars from the Pinewood Car Keeper and their table to the the Pinewood Race Master. You also need to double check that the correct cars are being transported and that there are no obvious issues (like wheel falling off,etc.). You are also designated to retrieve the cars from the end of the track once heat is run. You may enroll an assistant to help you, but they should be sure to use caution when transporting the cars and walking near the track. The track(s) have seen some abuse in the past and we need to work in earnest to avoid future damage. You are not expected to show up at the early time but persons setting up in at the start of the event could use the additional help. The Pinewood Weigh-In Supervisor: You are responsible for making sure each car in the race is within specs. Once the car has passed the inspection, then the car needs to be given to the Pinewood Car Keeper. We have tried to adjust the flow of the weigh-in by designating times for each pack to come in for weigh-in. Hopefully this will avoid the mass convergence that usually happens just before race time. You are encourage to get an assistant or two to help with moving the cars from the your position to the Car Keeping Table and to assist in car inspections. If a car is not within specs you are to direct the build and company to the car clinic to make adjustments. It is encouraged that you NOT adjust cars but leave it to the builder to avoid any liability for accidental damage. Once you have approved a car, it should not be available to the builder until after the races are complete, except to repair cars that sustained damage or need adjustment due to race conditions.

It is also good to check in with the Pinewood Car Clinic so that you both are aware of each others positions. The Pinewood Car Clinic: You are responsible in overseeing the car clinic. You provide and track the tools being used. You also provide and track the parts available for the adjustments. Weights are going to be the parts most in demand as most builders have not actually weighed their cars yet. A drill, pliers, hand screwdriver(s), hammer, tape (various kinds) and glue (quick drying) are the basic pieces that are going to be needed although other tools can be useful. You should have a scale available, but may be up to you to verify that someone is bringing a second one. It is also your responsibility to make sure that the tools are returned to volunteers who provided them and clean up the car clinic area. You need to show up no later than 20 minutes before the first weigh-in time although assistance to early set up crew is appreciated. The Food Vendor: Your responsibility is to sell the food, track the money, and set up the refreshments (usually cooler of water and cooler of lemonade). You are also responsible to source a table for the outdoor stall. This may be available by the Northwood equipment, but it may not so be prepared. You need to coordinate with the treasurer to get funds to buy the food and organize getting the food and finally clean up. This year we are doing Little Ceasar s Pizza and we have specific things that need to be done in this case. We need to coordinate with Little Ceasar to cut the pizzas into 10 slices instead of the usual 8 and we need to pick up 5 pizzas available sell 30 mins before the start of the race and have another 5 pizza available to sell 1 hour after the race has started. This is to provide ample time to sell all the pizza purchased and to maximize the availability of hot pizzas. We will be selling the pizza slices for $1 each. Paper towels or plates should be provided to each purchaser.

5 The task of retrieving pizzas can be coordinated with a pack committee member as we are trying to get non-committee members to run the various stations of the race event. The Lego Racer Vendor: Your task is to sell the Lego Packs for Lego Derby that will be outside. They will make sure that the Packs have the appropriate Axle pairs and 5oz bag of lego parts. They will also be supervising the donation bowl/box for people who want to donate unused portions from their lego packs for other kids to use if they are looking for specific parts. They are also in charge of tracking the money for the Lego Packs and getting that money back to the Treasurer. You need to show up early to help set up the track and coordinate with the Lego Racer Master. Enrollment of assistants is greatly encouraged. The Lego Racer Master: In charge of overseeing the lego races outside on the second track. Also in charge of helping set up and take down the track. This is a much looser race, but may be more involved due to the ages of the racers. The lego race is open to all who buy a lego Pack. You need to show up early to help set up the track and coordinate with the Lego Racer Vendor. You are also expected to help set up the safety line (blue tape on ground & maybe small cones) that keeps the audience and racers back and help enforce the clearance. 6 Your Job is to announces the racers, times and cars in each heat over the PA. Will also announce the winners and other event specific information. You are to coordinate the Pinewood Race Master and the Pinewood Car Keeper. You need to show up no later than 20 minutes before the Pinewood races start although assistance to early set up crew is appreciated.
