GREAT RESOURCES: ANDYA One of the really fun things I get to do in my appraisal business in addition to seeing a lot of great cars is getting to meet many of the talented people who spend their time serving the collector car hobby in one fashion or another. This issue features an outstanding resource who is just a few hundred miles away and may not be very well known to most car people in Colorado. The person I m referring to is Andy Glause owner of Andy s Restoration located just outside the small community of Saint Libory, Nebraska. Andy likes being close to his family and the rural atmosphere where he grew up just a short distance north of Grand Island, Nebraska. Andy grew NDY S RESTORATION up on a farm but by the age of fifteen he knew he didn t want to be a farmer. While in high school, he took some shop classes and practiced welding on the farm while his father complained he was using up all the gas. His father probably didn t realize he was witnessing the beginning of his sons life-long career. After high school Andy was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam war. As luck would have it, he was stationed in Germany where he did repairs to military vehicles and officers personal cars. Parts for these cars from home were difficult to get in Germany, so Andy started fabricating most of the body parts he needed to repair fender benders and the like and thus continued his journey of developing his metal fabrication craft through his time in the military. After returning home from the service Andy worked for several years at area body shops near his home town learning and perfecting his bodywork skills. In the early days of Gibbon Fiberglass located in nearby Gibbon, Nebraska, the owner contacted Andy asking him to come to work for his emerging company. Andy decided to go to work for Gibbon Fiberglass and he did a lot of the metal work needed on the bodies and parts they would ultimately use in producing the molds for the manufacture of their new fiberglass parts. With Andy's help, Gibbon Fiberglass established a business that has been very well-known in the street rod industry for manufacturing some of the highest quality fiberglass bodies and parts available. While Andy was working for body shops and other businesses, he was also doing some projects on the side in his shop at home. After several years working for others, he decided it was time to start his own full-time business. Andy has been involved in a lot of projects behind the scenes since opening his own shop. Andy built the original prototype steel body used to form the dies that would stamp out the metal parts that would become the new steel Dearborn Deuce reproduction 3/window coupe body. He has also built several reproduction aluminum Cobra bodies and has done numerous fabrication projects on rare and low production cars. Andy may not be quite as well-known as you might expect, while he has done complete restorations, many times he only does the metal fabrication and part of the bodywork on a project and someone else does the final bodywork and paint. When one admires a finished project, you typically only hear about the Custom-Built Aluminum Frame by Phil Erby Hand-Built Aluminum Dash Panel w/defrosters Indian Motorcycle Speedometer painter, details about the drivetrain and suspension or the upholstery shop that did the interior work, seldom is the metal fabricator adequately recognized. I had the privilege of meeting Andy Glause in 2010 at the Good-Guys car show in Loveland, Colorado. His longtime friend whom he met in the Army when they were both stationed in Germany is an appraisal client of mine. That friend I m referring to is Phil Erby of Greeley, Colorado, who is a talented builder in his own right. He is the proud owner of the 1933 Ford Aluminum Replica Coupe Indian Motorcycle Tribute Street Rod featured in this article. This car is a combination of Phil s two favorite things, street rods and Indian motorcycles. Phil helped a lot in the design of this car, did some of the fender and grille shell fabrication and also custom built Custom-Built Aluminum Frame by Phil Erby

This replica 5/Window Coupe body is not an exact copy of a 33 Ford. Phil wanted more room inside, so Andy built the body six inches longer in the cowl and door areas and three inches wider than stock while maintaining the overall look of the original body. The roof height was decreased from stock by approximately three inches to give the car that classic chopped hot rod look. All the details are there right down to a set of aluminum window garnish mouldings inside. After seeing the finished body, Phil decided he didn t want to paint the car so that everyone who saw the car could admire the high quality workmanship used in building this body. There is absolutely no body filler of any kind anywhere on this car. After Andy built the body from scratch Phil spent the better part of a year working in his spare time to carefully grind and finish all the weld seams on the body, he also polished the exterior body mouldings and then scuffed the rest of the body with Scotchbrite pads. Then the entire surface was cleaned and prepped for a special clearcoat that was professionally applied and buffed. While Andy Glause was building the body for the 33, Phil Erby custom built the aluminum frame himself, installed the Heidt s independent front suspension and the Jaguar rearend and suspension. As for the heart of this project, Phil chose to rebuild a 1950 s Mercury flathead V8 engine block bored to 276cid with aluminum heads and Holley four-barrel carburetor that dynoed in at RPM! He connected that to a GM 5-speed manual transmission with aluminum case. Everything on this car that could be aluminum is aluminum including the flywheel, polished driveshaft, heads, intake, etc. The finished curb weight of the car is only 2250 pounds! This build is the essence of the street rod sport. Individual expression, design, engineering and friends working together to produce a rolling work of art. The street rod hobby is about self-expression and there may be something about any collector car you see that you may not like personally, but even if there s something about this featured car you don t particularly care for, you ve still got to appreciate the high quality workmanship obvious throughout this build. I haven t known Andy Glause long but it doesn t take anyone much time to realize he is a very humble guy who is truly talented and skilled at what he does. Andy does some of the highest quality metal fabrication you ll find anywhere. He doesn t do this work for fame or fortune, he does it because he enjoys his work and he gets satisfaction from constantly learning and developing new techniques and helping people fulfill their dreams. Andy has been working in metal fabrication and bodywork for well over forty years and has a very impressive body of work behind him. He s also respected by some of the most wellknown builders in the country such as Chip Foose and many others. Andy doesn't need a big fancy shop in a commercial space, he works out of his shop at home which helps to reduce his overall cost of operation and therefore keeps his rates much lower than most metal fabricators of his caliber. 5 UMMER 2012 CARC SUMMER As this issue of our newsletter goes to print our business activities are changing as the car show season winds down into the Fall season of the year. The summer months are always our busiest time of year performing lots of appraisals, attending as many car shows as possible, monitoring collector car auctions, etc. I like to attend the larger shows because of the opportunity to see more cars in one place and the larger shows also draw more vendors showcasing new products, etc. This article is a summary of some of the larger car shows we attended this summer. The first large car show of the summer was the Good-Guys show in Loveland, Colorado. This show takes place at the Larimer County Fairgrounds, commonly known in the area as The Ranch. This venue is only about fifteen minutes drive from my house, so I usually attend this show every year. Always a good show, although attendance has been down for the past couple of years compared to past Good-Guys events of five or six years ago. This show usually draws around 2,000 cars, recent attendance however has been around 1,500 cars. The second larger car show we attended was the Exotic Sports Car Show in Littleton, Colorado. This year s show had the largest number of cars and the largest spectator attendance in its twenty-nine year history. There were several hundred cars at this show including Porsches, Ferrari s, Jaguar s, Austin-Healey s and many other brands. 6 UMMER 2012 CARC SUMMER AR SHOW SUMMARY NSRA Rocky Mountain Nationals, Pueblo, Colorado NSRA Rocky Mountain Nationals, Pueblo, Colorado NSRA Rocky Mountain Nationals, Pueblo, Colorado other car shows in Colorado. The weather was perfect the day of this show, clear skies and not too hot! Mark your calendar for this show next year, this is one you don t want to miss, June 9, 2013! The next larger show was the NSRA Rocky Mountain Nationals in Pueblo, Colorado, always held the last weekend of June. We try to make it down for at least one day of this show each year. This is always a good show, you see a lot of new cars there every year. The weather in Pueblo is usually very hot and this year was no exception with temperatures well over 100 degrees. Attendance this year was very strong with over 2,000 cars and a very good spectator turn-out as well. The National Street Rod Association always does an outstanding job with each event. They ve been doing car shows now for over forty years and I think they ve got a pretty good idea of how it s done. No other organization has more giveaways at each of their events than NSRA and the atmosphere is always great. The last large show of the season that I attended this year was the NSRA Street Rod Nationals held in Louisville, Kentucky, August 2nd through the 5th. I hadn't been to this event for several years and it was great to be able to connect with some old friends. It s always a lot of fun to attend a show of this size. NSRA has consistently had around 10,000 cars registered every year at this event for many years now and always a lot of vendors too. We re looking forward to attending this event again next year.
