2 FROM THE GMD S DESK NEW GOVERNMENT NEW HOPES Dato Sri Ir Chong Ket Pen, Group Managing Director NEW CHALLENGES NEW STRATEGIES On 10 May 2018, the nation welcomed a new Malaysia and Protasco welcomes YAB Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as Malaysia s 7th Prime Minister. This is a stunning election comeback, after defeating the coalition that has ruled the nation for six decades since independence from Britain. As we know, the new government has promised a reformation of Malaysia s administration and politics as well as sustainable growth and economic development. Various programmes and policies have been outlined in the new government s manifesto to strengthen our nation and we are all excited to see how the new government will bring forth positive change in the long run. Amongst the measures being explored to reduce government expenditures and debts, the new government is now reviewing mega projects which have been approved by the previous administration. These in effect are brakes in what is seemingly a routine development process and directly impact many organisations in the infrastructure development and construction industry. Being a total integrated infrastructure solution provider, it is inevitable that Protasco will also be affected. However it is not the time for us to panic. We are in fact cautiously reassessing our business strategies and preparing for an austere economic environment. Malaysia have changed, Malaysians must too. On 10 May 2018, after a historical and eventful general election that has never seen before, Malaysia welcomed a new government. Since then, Malaysians have witnessed many things unraveled, some shocking and some welcomed. We should all only look at these events positively. Even if the country takes time to settle down after the takeover, everyone should really look at the bigger picture that is Malaysia trying to be better than before. There are many management lessons that can be learnt from these past events; like how correct branding can ensure victory, that real data are key information for strategic decision making and the importance of understanding your target audience, so that you can strategise your marketing campaign correctly. We should all be positive and strive to renew for a better Malaysia. What s more extraordinary about the new government is that the newly sworn in 7th Malaysian Prime Minister, YAB Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was Malaysia s 4th Prime Minister, and he is 93 years old. YAB Tun has created another history as the oldest person to be a Prime Minister. These measures may only deliver short-term benefits, however we are mindful that if they are not duly managed, business operation may be adversely impacted and future business growth hampered. We will and must balance short-term concerns against longer term objectives to position Protasco to be ready to work with the new government in a new environment. The focus should be making a leaner, more flexible organisation, with cost reduction as a consequence. A more structured approach to cost management therefore means thinking beyond short-term costs savings to assess and question underlying business models. By focusing on some of the key dimensions of the business, all business leaders of Protasco are urged to identify the core cost drivers and take steps to effectively manage costs in a sustainable manner. The 15th year anniversary celebration dinner planned for the 8th of August 2018 is cancelled. We know this is disappointing news for staff who has been looking forward to the event. However, we are certain our people will understand the more pressing need for us to effectively manage our resources. We can look forward to more measures be put in place in the coming months to help strengthen the company s position. It defines that age is not and should not be a factor to stop us from continuing to achieve what we want. Most important is we need to be physically and mentally active. He is a healthy 93 years old, who still keeps to a routine exercise regime. He takes care of his food intake and is said to be an avid reader. At an age where most people choose to rest and enjoy life, he is still serving his country. 3 OUR PEOPLE, OUR PRIORITY We have often heard that a company s success is built around its people. At Protasco, we believe that staff wellbeing is an important factor in determining our long-term effectiveness. We understand there is a direct link between productivity levels and the general health and wellbeing of the workforce. Employee wellbeing relates to all aspects of working life, from the quality and safety of the physical environment to how workers feel about their work and working environment. The aim of measures for workplace well-being is to complement Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) measures to make sure workers are safe, healthy, satisfied and engaged at work. Over the years Protasco has implemented many aspects of items to increase staff satisfaction and morale, improve retention and productivity, reduce absenteeism, foster better relationships between staff and management, and increase open communications, all of which ultimately benefit the company in order to achieve a more sustainable workforce. Amongst the items implemented, as referenced to the checklist diagram on employee well-being below, Protasco covers all four social, physical, environment and psychological aspects. This volume of Protasco Newsletter would cover some of the activities (that happened between December 2017 until June 2018) from each aspect which demonstrates the company s strong belief in its staff. 4 psychological Long Service Award PROTASCO CELEBRATES LOYALTY Companies who recognize their people are more apt to sustain performance excellence. Countless studies have shown that when people feel appreciated and get recognized, they are more engaged, more motivated and more productive. The result is greater productivity that eventually leads to better business results. Employee recognition is a key component of a comprehensive total rewards programme, which includes compensation, benefits, performance, work-life and recognition, and professional development opportunities. Each component of a total rewards programme serves to assist in the attraction, retention, engagement and motivation of an organisation s workforce. FOLLOW US ON Recently, 106 employees of Protasco who had served the company for 20 years and more were celebrated to honor their loyalty and service. The Anugerah Khidmat Setia award ceremony held on 11 May 2018 at the Perdana Ballroom of IOI Palm Garden Hotel saw the presentation of certificates as well as tokens of appreciation to all recipients by Protasco s Group Managing Director, Dato Sri Ir Chong Ket Pen. 4

5 HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT DRIVE WORKSHOP FOR ALL IUKL ACADEMIC STAFF On 13 February 2018, IUKL has conducted a Google Drive Workshop for all of its academic staff. The workshop aims to provide the lecturers with an effective tool on document sharing where they are then encouraged to apply in their teaching methods. IUKL envision to provide Google Drive trainings to all staff of Protasco and the public. 5

6 Environment MYSAFETY: TOWARDS A SAFETY CULTURE Protasco has always placed the safety of its employees as priority and warrants a continuous culture of a safe working environment. Recently, an event to educate employees about safety was organised by the MySafety team, a category under the MyWellness campaign. Tagged towards a safety culture, the one-day event held on 3 May 2018 included activities on safety with the highlight being a talk on safety around fire by the Cyberjaya Fire Department representative. Leading by example, employees were delighted to see Dato Sri Ir Chong Ket Pen volunteering to demonstrate using the fire extinguisher. SAFETY & SECURITY MAJLIS PENYAMPAIAN ANUGERAH KESELAMATAN DAN KESIHATAN PEKERJAAN 2017 BAGI ROADCARE (M) SDN BHD Sepanjang bulan Disember 2017, Roadcare (M) Sdn Bhd telah menyampaikan anugerah keselamatan dan kesihatan pekerjaan kepada seramai 3 orang staf dari pelbagai zon. Anugerah tahunan ini diberikan kepada staf yang memenuhi kriteria dari aspek pematuhan keselamatan, pemakaian PPE di tempat kerja, kecergasan dan sebagainya. Pada 17 Disember 2017, Encik Zoolamali bin Yusoff daripada RCSB Kelantan telah menjadi wakil untuk menyampaikan anugerah keselamatan dan kesihatan pekerjaan bagi zon negeri Kelantan. Pada 18 Disember 2017, penyampaian anugerah telah disempurnakan oleh Encik Wan Razmin Zainal bin Wan A Rahman dari RCSB Terengganu dan Encik Risyadi bin Irwan dari RCSB Pahang. Manakala di RCSB Selangor, En.Shahril bin Munir telah menyampaikan anugerah pada 22 Disember 2017 bagi zon negeri Selangor. FOLLOW US ON 6

7 PROTASCO MYWELLNESS AWARENESS DAY AND WOMEN S DAY 2018 physical Protasco celebrated women recently with a special event that took place on 8 March 2018 (officially International Women s Day) by donning purple and conducting many health-related activities including health screening test, health checkup and health talks by Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia and Oxford Diagnostics. A MyWellness awareness event was also held in conjunction with the women s day celebration. CERAMAH SEMPENA ISRA DAN MIKRAJ Pada 17 April 2018, Masjid Ikram telah menganjurkan Ceramah Sempena Isra dan Mikraj dengan tajuk Transformasi Ke Arah Budaya Kerja Cemerlang. Ceramah ini disampaikan oleh YBhg Ustaz Hj Ahmad Kamarul Najam bin Datuk Hj Mohd Ghazali, Pegawai Tadbir Daerah Sepang yang menggantikan Ustaz Datuk Abu Hassan Din, bertempat di Masjid Ikram, Unipark Suria. KKPRO JOM CUTI-CUTI BANGKOK Kelab Kebajikan Protasco (KKPro) telah menganjur dan menguruskan satu lagi pakej percutian kali ini ke Bangkok, Thailand selama 4 hari 3 malam pada 6 9 April Seramai 20 orang turut serta dalam aktiviti melawat tempat-tempat menarik di Bangkok. 7

8 social PROGRAM SUMBANGAN AMAL KORPORAT BERSAMA ANAK-ANAK ORANG ASLI Pada 28 Disember 2018, Roadcare (M) Sdn Bhd telah menganjurkan Program Sumbangan Amal Korporat berbentuk kelengkapan sekolah bersama seramai 110 orang anak-anak orang asli bertempat di Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Tiang, Cameron Highlands, Pahang. Program ini telah dirasmikan oleh YBhg. Dato Wan Imran bin Wan Omar, Ketua Pegawai Operasi Roadcare Sdn Bhd. Majlis ini turut dihadiri oleh Ir. Eow Thein Wee, Jurutera Daerah JKR Cameron Highlands dan En.Caffli B. Permid, Ketua Unit Bahagian Infra Sosial JAKOA. BACK-TO-SCHOOL CSR PROGRAMME BY PROTASCO BERHAD The year-end Protasco Back-to-School CSR Programme was organised for the second time recently where underprivileged children between ages 7 and 17 years old were taken on a shopping spree to purchase a full set of school attire. The activity which took place on 29 December 2017 at Pusat Pakaian Hari-Hari in Seri Kembangan involved more than 60 children from 40 families. Enabling education has always been a focus in Protasco s CSR strategy, in line with its vision to improve quality of life within the community. FOLLOW US ON BANTUAN PERSEKOLAHAN ANAK-ANAK KAKITANGAN PROTASCO BERHAD DARI UNIT ZAKAT IUKL Pada 26 Disember 2017, Unit Zakat IUKL telah menyampaikan bantuan kewangan kepada kakitangan Protasco Berhad dalam Majlis Penyerahan Bantuan Persekolahan yang diadakan di Dewan Persidangan, Protasco. Bantuan ini bertujuan meringankan beban perbelanjaan awal tahun bagi persiapan persekolahan yang ditanggung oleh mereka. Penyerahan bantuan persekolahan ini adalah untuk kakitangan Protasco yang memenuhi syarat sebagai penerima bantuan zakat. 8

9 HAPPENINGS (JAN - JUNE) Reports by contributors across the Group Protasco Development s second phase of Projek Perumahan Penjawat Awam Malaysia (PPAM) called Saderi was recently opened for sale for two of its initial blocks and it has received warm reception from potential purchasers. The one-day sales event saw a steady flow of visitors indicating high interest in the property as it is located strategically, being very near amenities including Alamanda Shopping Centre, The Everly Hotel and Putrajaya Wetland to name a few. PROJECT PPAM SADERI SALES LAUNCH PROTASCO DEVELOPMENT SDN BHD-KOP MANTAP BERHAD JV WINS RM442.6 MILLION PPAM PROJECT On 2 January 2018, Protasco Development Sdn Bhd entered into a Joint Venture agreement with KOP Mantap Berhad for development of Perumahan Penjawat Awam Malaysia (PPAM) P19 Putrajaya. Protasco Development Sdn Bhd, will hold 51 percent in the joint venture while KOP Mantap, a wholly owned subsidiary of Koperasi Polis Diraja Malaysia Berhad, will hold the remaining 49 percent. The project, awarded by Unit Perumahan Penjawat Awam Malaysia, Perbadanan Putrajaya is to build 1,681 apartment units in Presint 19, Putrajaya. MAJLIS PECAH TANAH & MENANDATANGANI PERJANJIAN PEMBANGUNAN DI PRESINT 19 Satu majlis pecah tanah serta menandatangani perjanjian pembangunan Projek PPAM khusus bagi para anggota Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) yang dinamakan Kenanga dan Cempaka telah diadakan pada 4 Mei 2018 baru-baru ini. Majlis tersebut telah berlangsung di tapak projek di Presint 19, Putrajaya. Projek Kenanga akan dibangunkan oleh Protasco Development Sdn Bhd dengan usaha sama KOP Mantap manakala projek Cempaka akan dibangunkan oleh GN Homeland Sdn Bhd. I2 SOLARPARK ONE TO DEVELOP 6.80 MW SOLAR PV PLANT IN MELAKA On 25 April 2018, I2 Solarpark One has received a letter of award from the Energy Commission of Malaysia to develop a 6.80 MW large scale solar photovoltaic plant (LSSPV) in Alor Gajah, Melaka. I2 Solarpark One Sdn Bhd, which is 44% owned by Protasco subsidiary Ikram Greentech Sdn Bhd, received the RM92mil job and consequently signed a 21-year power purchase agreement with Tenaga Nasional Bhd. The solar power plant is expected to commence operation in December MAJLIS PRAPELANCARAN PPAM KENANGA Bersempena Hari Polis ke-211 pada 25 Mac yang lalu, YAB Perdana Menteri Malaysia, Dato Seri Mohd Najib B Tun Abdul Razak telah menyempurnakan majlis prapelancaran PPAM Kenanga di Pusat Latihan Polis (PULAPOL) Kuala Lumpur. Melalui usahasama Protasco Development Sdn Bhd dan Kop Mantap Berhad anak syarikat Koperasi Polis Diraja Malaysia Berhad, sebuah lagi projek PPAM yang dinamakan sebagai PPAM Kenanga akan dibina di Presint 19 Putrajaya. 10 HAPPENINGS (JAN - JUNE) IUKL COLLABORATES WITH DEPARTMENT OF IRRIGATION & DRAINAGE, MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES & ENVIRONMENT (DID) IN RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC On 26 February 2018, IUKL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Department of Irrigation & Drainage (DID) on academic and research collaborations to enhance and extend research capabilities into innovative water management technologies. This collaboration was anticipated to explore innovative water management technologies, including managing urban stormwater, flood mitigation and disaster response. The MOU was signed by DID Director General Dato Ir. Dr. Hj. Md. Nasir bin Md. Noh, and IUKL Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Roslan Zainal Abidin, witnessed by Protasco Berhad s Executive Vice Chairman and Group Managing Director Dato Sri Ir. Chong Ket Pen. SIGNING CEREMONY OF COLLABORATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN HCM ENGINEERING SDN BHD & VAMED ENGINEERING GMBH On 18 April 2018, HCM Engineering Sdn Bhd has signed a Memorandum of Collaboration with VAMED Engineering GMBH to enter into collaboration by way of unincorporated joint-venture. The agreement was signed by Mirsad Midzic, Managing Director of VAMED Engineering and Ir Edward Khoo Mong Wei, Executive Director Construction Division Protasco Berhad. PROTASCO GETS CONCESSION TO MAINTAIN FEDERAL ROADS IN SARAWAK SUSTAINABILITY UPDATE WAY FORWARD Charting Protasco s fraternity on the way forward, a sustainability summing up session was conducted on 6 February 2018 at the Conference Hall. An associate company of Protasco Bhd, DAL HCM Sdn Bhd has been granted the right to undertake routine maintenance, periodic maintenance, emergency works and other activities on part of the federal roads consisting 751 km. DAL HCM is a 30%-owned unit of HCM Engineering Sdn Bhd, which in turn is wholly owned by Protasco. The other 70% stake is owned by D.A.L. Keluarga Realty Sdn Bhd. HCM had previously been awarded a 15-year concession by the government in 2003 to maintain 373 km of federal roads in Sarawak s Sibu, Bintulu and Mukah division. That concession will be expiring in August EXHIBITION AT ICW 2018 Protasco Maintenance Division and Protasco Trading & Manufacturing Division successfully participated in the International Construction Week (ICW) and Ecobuild Southeast Asia 2018 which was held from 26 to 30 March 2018 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. FOLLOW US ON IEM PRESIDENT GOLD AWARD 2018 Congratulations to IUKL graduate of Civil Engineering, Fatin Nadhirah binti Muhd Royani for being one of the recipients of IEM PRESIDENT GOLD AWARD 2018 on 21 April The award ceremony was held in conjunction with IEM 59th Annual Dinner and Awards Night 2018 at Sunway Resort Hotel. 10

11 HAPPENINGS (JAN - JUNE) IUKL PARTICIPATED IN THE STAR EDUCATION FAIR 2018 IUKL has recently participated in The Star Education Fair, Malaysia s pioneering organiser in education fairs which was held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC) on 6 and 7 January With participation by over 100 local and international higher education institutions, the event saw a lot of educational activities such as talk sessions by industry leaders, personality and career tests and free consultation with education consultants. IUKL WINS GOLD, SILVER MEDALS FOR BEST THESIS Two IUKL lecturers, Dr Azlinda Saadon and Dr Khalid Mohammed Breesem, both from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Infrastructure won gold and silver medals respectively at the National Level Best Thesis of Higher Learning Institutions in the Doctor of Philosophy category presented by Menteri Besar Perak at the World Water Day celebration at Laman Budaya in Kuala Kangsar. LIVELINESS OF ACTIVITIES IN IUKL INFO DAY On 20 and 21 January 2018, IUKL opened its doors to the public during its Open Day which was held in the Faculty of Architecture and Built Environment (FABE) Atrium. Some of the activities conducted include Educational Talks, Career Pathway Talks, an Automotive Roadshow, a Design & Model Display on Architecture & Landscape Architecture, a Final Project & Thesis Display, Accounting Scrabble games, Microscope Demonstrations & DNA Models, as well as a Plants, Soils & Insects Display. EDUCULTOUR PROGRAMME IN IUKL SUNWAY INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS SCHOOL (SIBS) CULTURAL EXPERIENCE AT IUKL IUKL recently played host to student guests from Kathmandu, Nepal, on their six-day visit (11th to 16th January 2018) to IUKL in order to gain real-time experience of the Universitiy s learning system and environment. The students, along with two school officers, were from Sunway International Business School, one of IUKL s international franchise partners. The Education, Culture and Tourism programme (EduCulTour) is an effort to promote education through tourism. This programme has been conducted by IUKL through its strong academic linkages with partners abroad such as Hebei University, China, Kanda University of International Studies, Japan, University of Miyazaki, Japan, just to name a few. From 6 to 11 February, for the first time, IUKL through its Business Development Division collaborated with the Up Tour (To) You agency from Shenzhen, China in welcoming six to 11 year-old school children to have a hands-on experience and learnt more about Malaysia through interactive traditional games, tasted local delicacies, visited famous tourist attractions and the interactive learning theme centres such as Kidzania and Petrosains. IUKL will be receiving another group for this programme, Uniglobe College, Nepal sometime this year. 11

12 social PROTASCO SANTUNI PUSAT AKTIVITI WARGA EMAS (PAWE) CHERAS BARU Pada 2 Februari 2018, Protasco telah menjalankan tanggungjawab sosial korporat dengan mengadakan aktiviti amal bergotong-royong bersama seramai lebih 40 orang penghuni PAWE bersempena pelancaran Program Sukarelawan kakitangan Protasco Berhad. Program ini yang dihadiri oleh seramai 36 orang sukarelawan dari Protasco Berhad, diadakan bertujuan untuk mendekatkan hubungan dengan warga emas, sekaligus menggembirakan hati mereka. Syarikat juga menyampaikan sumbangan berupa pembinaan dan pemasangan kabinet dapur untuk kegunaan PAWE. Pelbagai aktiviti lain juga telah dijalankan antaranya senamrobik dan sesi beramah mesra bersama ahli-ahli PAWE. FOLLOW US ON 12
