It has not been an easy time for us here at Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM). As you know, the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March, and the subsequent nuclear plant crisis that is still unresolved as we speak, is one of the most devastating disasters of modern times. Many have lost their homes as entire towns and communities were wiped away in an instant. The real life stories that flowed from Japan are heartbreaking, to say the least. We at MMM would like to express our deepest condolences to all those suffering as a result of this tragic event. We hope and pray that those affected will be able to recover soon. In Japan, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has donated 30 million yen to assist victims as well as vehicles to aid recovery work. MMM has also chipped in by donating RM100, 000 to the Red Crescent Society in aid of Japan. The damage from the earthquake and tsunami has affected various industries, including the automotive sector and its many vendors. MMC s production was not spared, but the good news is that the situation has improved greatly since, and MMC now expects to achieve its original pre-disaster full year domestic production targets. As for overseas production, pre-earthquake production targets are expected to be surpassed. On the local front, in order for us to continue serving you better with greater exclusivity, we are expanding our service network nationwide to deliver a more focused service, closer to you. The over 500 passengers that were lucky to sit with Masuoka in the Pajero Sport and Triton not only enjoyed themselves but they brought home a lasting memory of riding with a Dakar legend. In view of this, and also in line with Mitusbishi s corporate responsibility initiatives, staff of authorised dealer MMC Prestasi (MMCP) paid a recent visit to Care Haven, a welfare service home for children. Located in Johor Bahru, Care Haven is a charitable organisation that provides care, assisted-upbringing as well as full-lodging services for less fortunate children. Through their services, Care Haven hopes to educate under-privileged kids on love, while transforming children s lives to regain self-esteem and renew their hopes. MMC Prestasi staff visited the home bearing daily necessities such as food and toiletries as well as candies and cupcakes, the latter bringing smiles to the faces of the children. While all these benefited the kids of Care Haven, MMCP employees also left with warm hearts, having been touched by the children. It was a truly rewarding day. 3

4 Issue news Mitsubishi Customer Care Campaign 2011 Mitsubishi owners had a pleasant surprise recently, as Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) organised a Customer Care Campaign (CCC) from 25 May to 18 June as a token of appreciation to its valued customers. The CCC offered a 30-point free vehicle inspection and discounts of up to 40% on selected parts to those who serviced their cars at authorised Mitsubishi Motors service centres. Customers also received a free safety triangle with flashing LED lights on a first come first serve basis courtesy of MMM. In addition, there were also sessions where customers can have their vehicles test-driven by expert Mitsubishi Technical Consultants at selected authorised dealers. The locations were Target Orion Star, Klang; JM Auto Gallery, Butterworth; Jimisar Autotrade, Kuching; Aragaya Automobil, KK; Sendang Motors, Kuantan and Premium Century, Seremban. 5 news Issue Road Trippin to Penang with the Husbands By Nora Ismail THE BEST WEDDING PRESENT Before I got married, many married couples I met told me and my then-fiancé that as you get married, good fortune comes your way or in Malay, murah rezeki. We didn t think much of it until the wedding day approached. In addition to help and some extra cash for the wedding, finding out that I won the ASX-perience contest was the icing on the cake! By the way, the ASX-perience contest required participants to tell why they deserve a road trip trip, about a week before the honeymoon. What made it even more special that it wasn t just our first road trip as husband and wife, it was our first road trip as a couple. And I m going with both my human husband and the other husband the handsome red Mitsubishi ASX I ve been eyeing since I saw it on the Internet. (I was a big Lancer fan previously). THE RIDE Driving up to Penang was fun, considering I ve never driven anywhere outside of Selangor, with the exception of Seremban. We also stopped in Taiping to visit my husband s late grandfather s house. The ASX s handling on corners made driving up the hilly, winding roads after Ipoh and on the way to Batu Ferringhi almost a nonexistent challenge we were going fairly fast as well. Driving on the straight roads, however, was a challenge. The speed easily reaches 140 km/h without flooring the accelerator so trying to go 90 km/h or 110 km/h in the speed trap zones was tough and required a lot of braking. But we managed. And we totally smoked a BMW outside of the speed zone, yeah! Of course being a road trip, we stocked up on tons of snacks and drinks. It s a good thing the ASX has more than just 2 cup holders in the front. Self shot photos for the co-pilot was also made even easier with large side view mirrors, heh. And oh, what a convenience the rear view camera is when reversing it s a good addition to a higher car, where you can t really see if there s a dog obstructing your way. The ASX doesn t guzzle as much fuel for a 2.0 litre engine we paid RM100 for RON97 to fuel up 5/8 of a tank. Driving in Penang itself is pretty insane. Penang drivers are rather aggressive and it doesn t help that the roads are pretty narrow so if you re driving a compact vehicle, you ll feel like everyone s inching into you. But then again, it s island driving as Bali s the same. THE ISLAND I ve only been to Penang once in my entire life, and that was to attend a cousin s wedding. So I m glad I get to do more things this time around, now that we had our own transportation. We went to the Batu Ferringhi night market, where we bagged some cool stuff, including a katana-inspired umbrella (the husband s a geek, but a cool one), had the famous Nasi Kandar Beratur and Kek Seng homemade ice cream, bought preserved buah salak and nutmeg, dragon balls and empuk durian as souvenirs, and swam and chilled at Hard Rock Hotel Penang. We also met up with a friend, John, who lives in Mount Pleasure, Tanjung Bungah with his parents. John and his parents saw the ASX and approved of it, adding that it looks like a cool, young version of the Nissan Murano. in the ASX based on the weekly scenario posted on Facebook. After getting past that stage thanks to Likes on Facebook as well as nods from the judges, we had to shoot a creative video with the ASX in the second stage. Yours truly s matrimonial ceremony video with the ASX (yes, I married the car!) turned out to be the winning entry, so off I went for the road trip! The timing was great, as we could take the trip after all three of our wedding events were over. As our honeymoon was only three weeks after the events, we decided to make it a pre-honeymoon John s parents took us out to the Penang Swimming Club for dinner and his mom shared a secret with us there s a bakery called Sunflower in Tanjung Bungah that makes the best hard-tofind sugee cake and layer cake. Guess what we bought the next day before we drove back to KL? That s right sugee cake and layer cake. They didn t disappoint! THE END Overall, it was a great prelude to our honeymoon. We got to drive my favourite car for a whole three days (I insisted on driving most of the time) and I got to experience Penang with someone whose family originates from there. We miss the ASX so badly now! 5

6 Issue news The Dakar Rally Experience hits Sarawak Two-time Dakar champion Hiroshi Masuoka thrills the crowd in Kuching The Mitsubishi Dakar Rally Experience has now established itself as a fun filled event where participants get to experience first hand thrills of off-road driving, as well as the proven capabilities of Mitsubishi 4X4 vehicles. Mitsubishi Motors is the most successful make in Dakar Rally history, winning the World s Toughest Race a record of 12 times. Recently, Sarawakians had a taste of the Dakar Rally Experience for the first time when the event was held in Kuching in March. And to make things even more special, the event was graced by Hiroshi Masuoka, two-time winner of the Dakar Rally in a Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero. Some 4,000 people attended the two-day event held at Travillion. Of those, 500 lucky folks got to experience the ride of their lives, sitting in with Masuoka as the rally legend drove the award winning Mitsubishi Triton and Pajero Sport through a high-speed off-road course. It was already designed to be tough, but the rain transformed the course into a muddy trail with knee deep mud pits and unsighted ruts. But Masuoka was undeterred, throwing the 4X4s 6 around at will. It seemed unbelievably dangerous to the average Joe, but Masuoka was always in full control and in his element, power sliding in L-R Dato Ismail Salleh, Omar Haron (COO), Masuoka, Tuan Haji Abang Affandi Abang Anuar, Tetsuya Oda (CEO) the corners and showing incredibly fast reflexes behind the wheel. Besides the thrilling high-speed taxi rides,

7 news Issue participants also got to experience first hand the Triton pickup and Pajero Sport SUV s good offroad handling, durability and performance the award-winning vehicles were tested on a specially designed off-road track that included a 48-degree side traverse ramp, a cross axle ramp and a 50-degree giant ramp. This special ride with a professional rally driver is truly unforgettable! I am also amazed by the performance of the Mitsubishi Triton and Pajero Sport which were not tuned up but of normal specification. Under the challenging high speed track conditions, I experienced Mitsubishi 4x4 vehicles good off-road handling, durability and comfort in an exciting way! an excited 34-year-old Chen Kuoyang said. The Mitsubishi Dakar Rally Experience is fun for the whole family, and besides the driving action, there were activities such as free sand art and face painting booths, balloons for the little ones and free food for the first 1000 attendees for each of the two days. The first 100 daily to test drive any Mitsubishi vehicle also went home with exclusive Mitsubishi merchandise. Visitors were also entertained with nightly live concerts by local artists such as singerchoreographer Choo Hao Ren, Akademi Fantasia celebrities Hafiz and Claudia as well as local rock band Masterpiece. The event concluded on a high note with a magnificent fireworks display. 7

8 Issue news Mitsubishi Concept Global Small creates big waves at the Bangkok Motor Show From L-R Mr. Gayu Uesugi, Executive Vice President, and Representative Director of Product Projects & Strategy, Mr. Nobuyaki Murahashi, President of MMTH, Mr. Vigrant Amatayakul, Corporate General Manager of MMTH Mitsubishi Motors put on a great show at the recent 32nd Bangkok International Motor Show, held at the city s largest exhibition centre, IMPACT. The main star of the Mitsubishi Motors stand was the Concept Global Small, making its Asian debut in Thailand. Alongside the concept car, MMC also paraded the i-miev electric car and the full range of cars sold in the Thai market. The Concept Global Small is a compact B- Segment model that will have a next-generation architecture with built-in flexibility to accommodate customer requirements in all world markets, from 8 ASEAN to Europe. Production of the finalised version will start in March 2012 and the global production hub for the car is in Thailand, at Laem Chabang Industrial Estate in the Chonburi province. To be powered by a 1.0L and 1.2L compact MIVEC engine equipped with Auto Stop & Go and regenerative braking, and paired to a CVT or manual transmission, the 3.74 metre Concept Global Small conforms to Thailand s Eco-car project, which means that the starting price will be below 400,000 baht. Fuel efficiency and ecofriendly performance are the main points CO2 emissions are expected to be in the mid 90 g/ km range. The Global Small will be one of the first of a new wave of down-sized compact cars which is a next-generation compact developed around 3 principles for both emerging and developed markets, namely Environmentally-friendly, Value for money and Handy in use. It will be very compact at about 3.7 m., still seat 5 adults comfortably, high fuel efficiency with CO2 emission in the mid- 90 g/km in case of 1.0 liter engine for Europe market, said Mr Gayu Uesugi, Managing Director of Product Projects & Strategy at Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.

10 Issue news Mitsubishi lends support to Japan earthquake and tsunami victims 30 million yen, i-miev and Triton vehicles aid the recovery process The earthquake and tsunami disaster that hit Japan in March, as well as the following nuclear crisis, have severely impacted the lives of those living in the area. Homes, possessions and even family members are missing, and the scale of the impact is immense. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) offers its sincere condolences and sympathy to the victims of the Tohoku Earthquake. The company and its employees pray that the devastated area attains recovery as soon as possible. The MMC group in Japan has confirmed a donation of 30 million yen to assist the victims and damaged areas. As an additional support, MMC will supply vehicles to accommodate the circumstances and needs of local authorities in the area. Vehicles offered include the pioneering i-miev electric vehicle as well as the Triton pickup truck. They will be used to help the rebuilding process. Many of the afflicted areas are troubled with serious gasoline shortage issue, and the i-miev, being a fully electric car can play its part without getting bogged down by refuelling. As for the Triton, it was chosen for its robustness and heavy duty performance that will be suited to the rough and damaged roads in the region. Like most carmakers in Japan, production has been affected at MMC because of the disaster. However, the situation has been improving fast, including parts procurement. MMC has resumed continuous production from April 18, and production volume from that date to the end of the April will be 90% of its original planned volume. Total production for the month of April stands at about 60% of the original planned volume. The situation is improving by the month. For MMC plants outside of Japan, such as in Thailand, the effect on production is negligible and MMC forecasts normal and continuous operation for its overseas plants. 10

12 Issue news Frequently asked questions What s the difference between turbocharging and supercharging? What s the difference between power and torque? Don t they serve the same function? Is it fine if I mix different brands of engine oil? In this segment, we select some frequently asked questions related to your car and shed some light on them. If there s a technical question you want answered, your query to editor@mitsubishi-motors.com.my and we ll try our best. 1. How should I drive to reduce engine wear? A significant portion of engine wear occurs when the engine is below normal operating temperature, idling for long periods of time and when accelerating at full throttle. The ideal condition is when the engine s revolution (RPMs) is between 40 70% of its maximum. 2. Why is it harmful for an engine to run for long at a temperature that is below normal? Surely, an engine seems to run better on a cold day? An engine does run well when inhaling colder air, because the air is denser, and even contains moisture that enhances combustion. Moisture also collects on most of the engine s metal parts due to condensation. Water is also one of the byproducts of combustion. When the engine doesn t warm up to its operating temperature (between degrees Celsius), the moisture/water doesn t get hot enough to boil and evaporate as steam through the exhaust and/or the engine breather. This will cause acidity levels to gradually increase and over time, increase engine wear. 3. What is the difference between power and torque? Torque is the rotational equivalent of a force, so the torque developed by an engine can be restated as a force between the tyres and the road. This force determines the way an engine will pull up 5. What causes my engine to overheat easily, whether I drive slowly or fast? Excessive increase in engine temperature will cause irreparable damage to the engine, so always make sure the cooling system is inspected regularly for leaks, corrosion and coolant level. The radiator should also be inspected for blockage like leaves, mud, etc. that may reduce the air flow through its cooling fins. A worn water pump, a blocked radiator, a stuck thermostat, or even a blockage in the cylinder block could impede or reduce the water flow and cause overheating. Always have your vehicle regularly checked a hill or when towing a caravan, and an engine with a lot of torque at low engine speeds will not need constant gear changing in traffic. Power is essentially the torque multiplied by the revs, and can be seen as the speed at which the torque is being delivered. This means that every aspect of performance that can be measured with a stopwatch, such as maximum speed or km/h acceleration, depends on the power output. 4. What is the main difference between supercharging and turbocharging? Superchargers are driven by a belt or chain from the engine s crankshaft and is usually geared to rotate up to twice as fast as the engine. This 12 makes them very responsive to any change in engine speed, delivering extra torque especially from low engine revs. It has the disadvantage of robbing the engine of power, to gain more power. Turbochargers are built to rotate up to 200,000 RPMs because they re driven by the exhaust gasses exiting from the engine. This build up in RPMs take some time, resulting in a certain amount of delay in torque delivery when you accelerate (this is called turbo lag). The advantage of turbochargers is that this extra power is freely gained, as the exhaust energy would have been wasted through the exhaust pipe. and serviced by your service dealer, to ensure the cooling system is working properly. 6. Is it safe to mix the different brands of mineral oil? Yes. Most major oil companies comply to several international standards (for example, SAE, API, ACA, etc.) for engine oils. Therefore, most of these oils are compatible even if mixed between organic and synthetic oils. This mixing will change the oil s original characteristics and specification ratings but if used as an emergency, will not damage the engine. It is always better to run with enough engine oil than none at all.
