3 FOREWORD With more than 30 years experience in the design and manufacture of bespoke steering solutions Titan Motorsport are market leaders in manual steering solutions. In addition to manual steering solutions Titan also offer electronic power assistance in various configurations column power assistance. Titan can work with the customer to design a bespoke steering solution to suit all customer requirements. ELECTRONIC POWER ASSISTED STEERING SYSTEM The advantages of electronic power assisted steering (EPAS) are well known in the automotive industry for improved efficiency even over electro-hydraulic systems: Weight Saving Reduced engine drag as belt driven pump has be deleted Tenability Plug and Play system on manual racks Titan Motorsport offers two versions modular systems based around a similar brushed DC motor. 1. Motorsport EPAS system is suitable for applications that use a manual steering rack or as an upgrade to existing deleted hydraulic steering rack installations. The level of assistance provided is automatically measured by the mechanical torque sensor built into the assembly and controlled by the ECU. There are two ECU options offering different levels of controllability. 2. Street EPAS system has been re-designed to incorporate the control unit upon the motors casing. The two options within this range offer a long column or a reduced shortened column depending on your fitment requirements. Both of these kits are street legal, and neither of these offer the ability to fine tune the levels of assistance or have pre-load assistance maps. Both are controlled via a manual potentiometer or wheel speed sensor. To make a complete system the following equipment is required; 1. Motor Assembly 2. ECU 3. Wiring Loom (standard or bespoke available) Either way, Titan can design either complete steering solutions or part of it, depending on the customer requirements. Page 3 of 11

4 EPAS - MOTORSPORT Using highly tested components from a renowned manufacturer DC Electronics, this system sits between the steering wheel and the steering rack. A calibrated torsion beam is fitted between the input and output shaft of the EPAS unit and innovative mechanical torque sensor calibrated to +/- 7 Nm is attached to it. A potentiometer, connected to the sensor, feeds the torque value to the ECU. The ECU controls the level of assistance provided via the 400W DC motor. Page 4 of 11

7 EPAS PRO RACE AND STREET SYSTEM Designed for a quick plug and play fitment, this has in turn reduced the overall price. This unit is the same as before but has an integrated ECU built into the casing. This keeps the unit easier to install, compact and simpler in its package. The unit comes in three versions all having the motor in common, but with different columns or ECU controllability. 9 ECU ECU - MIDI Designed for Motorsport applications where some element of mapping is required to fine tune 5 user programmes. The system can be used in standalone mode with the mapping controlled by a small PC application. The PC application also configures torque deadband, zero offset, control range and current limit. The ECU weighs 0.9Kg.. ECU ULTRA The Ultra ECU has been designed to integrate further into a vehicle system with more inputs and outputs and using high quality durable connections in a weather resistant enclosure. Other parameters available via the CAN interface include heatsink temperature, voltage, current map selection, I/O channels monitoring. The CAN Bus can be used to control the power levels or input ground speed to make the unit speed sensitive. 10 FAQ Question 1 Can I fit EPAS to any manual steering rack? The Motorsport system is designed to be used as a column assist unit and so if the packaging allows and the manual steering rack is Titan or equivalent then the system will work very well. Question 2 Can I fit this system to a single seat race car The main challenge with using this system in a single seat race car is with packaging, although the Motorsport system is reasonably compact it is still quite bulky. The Lightweight system with a totally bespoke steering solution like the case study would probably work better for packaging. Question 3 What is the power requirement and consumption? The system requires a very good 12V supply that fused and capable of delivering up to 80A. Peak power consumption happens with rapid changes in direction with a larger rack load for example if used in a heavier race car with slick tyres on tarmac then peak current will happen with rapid changes in direction. Question 4 What is the difference between all the ECU options? The entry level ECU/unit does not have a separately ECU but is controlled either manually or from the wheel speed sensor. The midi which uses a PC application to configure the assistance map, there are 5 to choose from. The top level ECU is an Ultra which has more inputs and outputs, and importantly a CAN bus to receive and transmit parameters on making an Ultra a sophisticated ECU which integrates to other systems on a vehicle.
