Vehicle speed is more than 6 mph (0 km/h). Open or short in vehicle speed sensor signal circuit of faulty wheel continues for second or more. () Momentary interruption of the sensor signal of faulty wheel has occurred 7 times or more. (3) Sensor signal circuit is open for 0.5 seconds. Right rear and left rear speed sensor Each speed sensor circuit Sensor rotor Sensor installation C38/38 C39/39 All the following conditions for at least 5 seconds. 2 05796 DIAGNOSTICS INSPECTION PROCEDURE Start the inspection from step when using the handheld tester and start from step 3 when not using the handheld tester. READ VALUE OF HANDHELD TESTER(REAR SPEED SENSOR) (a) Connect the handheld tester to the DLC3. (b) Start the engine. (c) Select the DATA LIST mode on the handheld tester. (d) Check that there is no difference between the speed value output from the speed sensor displayed by the handheld tester and the speed value displayed on the speedometer when driving the vehicle. Go to step 3 INSPECT SPEED SENSOR AND SENSOR ROTOR SERRATIONS Normal Signal Waveform m/s / Division V / Division GND W0400 INSPECTION USI OSCILLOSCOPE (a) Connect the oscilloscope to terminals RR+ RR or RL+ RL of the skid control ECU. (b) Drive the vehicle at approximately 9 mph (30 km/h), and check the signal waveform. : A waveform as shown in a figure should be output. As the vehicle speed (wheel revolution speed) increases, a cycle of the waveform narrows and the fluctuation in the output voltage becomes greater. When noise is identified in the waveform on the oscilloscope, error signals are generated due to the speed sensor rotor s scratches, looseness or foreign matter attached to it. Go to step 6 REPLACE REAR SPEED SENSOR (SEE PAGE 337 ) 986

(b) Make sure that there is no looseness at the connector s locking part and connecting part of the connector. (c) Measure the resistance between terminal of connector A and terminal of connector B. (d) Measure the resistance between terminal of connector A and terminal of connector B. 5 DIAGNOSTICS REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 5 INSPECT SPEED SENSOR AND SENSOR ROTOR SERRATIONS Normal Signal Waveform m/s / Division V / Division GND W0400 INSPECTION USI OSCILLOSCOPE (a) Connect the oscilloscope to terminals RR+ RR or RL+ RL of the skid control ECU. (b) Drive the vehicle at approximately 9 mph (30 km/h), and check the signal waveform. : A waveform as shown in a figure should be output. As the vehicle speed (wheel revolution speed) increases, a cycle of the waveform narrows and the fluctuation in the output voltage becomes greater. When noise is identified in the waveform on the oscilloscope, error signals are generated due to the speed sensor rotor s scratches, looseness or foreign matter attached to it. 6 05800 DIAGNOSTICS 6 INSPECT REAR SPEED SENSOR INSTALLATION Skid Control Sensor WD: (a) Check the sensor installation. : There is no clearance between the sensor and rear axle carrier. F N m (8 kgf cm,7 in. lbf) No Clearnace BR3795 (a) Check the speed sensor installation. : There is no clearance between the sensor and rear axle carrier. The installation bolt is tightened properly. Torque: 8.0 N m (8 kgf cm, 7 in. lbf) NOTICE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement (see page ). REPLACE REAR SPEED SENSOR (SEE PAGE 34 (FF) OR 344 (4WD)) 990

7 DIAGNOSTICS INSPECT SPEED SENSOR ROTOR AND SENSOR TIP WD: (a) Remove the skid control sensor (see page 34 ). (b) Check the sensor tip. : No scratches or foreign matter on the sensor tip. (a) Remove the rear speed sensor (See page 344 ). (b) Check the sensor tip. : No scratches or foreign matter on the sensor tip. Sensor Rotor WD: (a) Check the sensor rotor serrations. : No scratches, missing teeth or foreign matter on the rotor. F08575 Sensor Rotor R00948 (a) Remove the rear drive shaft (See page 3045 ). (b) Check the sensor rotor serrations. : No scratches, missing teeth or foreign matter. If foreign matter is attached, remove it and after reassembling, check the output waveform.
