1 STE-SD16LP STE-SD16LP Introduction A single Eurocard with STEbus interface provides isolated drive for up to sixteen low voltage solenoids or other power loads. An eight bit port configurable for input or output with TTL buffer drive capability is also included. The solenoid drive outputs are completely isolated from the STEbus signals by means of optocouplers. These are powered by an on board regulator drawing from the solenoid supply which does not need to be regulated or smoothed. As standard, the board is fitted with medium power darlington output devices capable of handling 2amps in pulsed operation. Installation The solenoid driver card occupies 8 addresses in the STE I/O map. The base address of the card is selected by means of the 8 bit address patch located near the centre of the bus connector. A link between any vertical pair of patch points puts that bit to zero and a comparison is made with the addresses A4 to A11 to select the card. Patch 0 - A4 (Leftmost patch) Patch 1 - A5 Patch 2 - A6 Patch 3 - A7 Patch 4 - A8 Patch 5 - A9 Patch 6 - A10 Patch 7 - A11 (Rightmost patch) If plunger action switches are fitted, down or ON corresponds to zero and up corresponds to one. Three two way patches HOLD,DIRN and ENAB are also provided offering flexible control of the TTL buffer channel. Some examples of the use of these patches are shown in the Connections diagram. Hold left prevents programmed changes to the buffer setting. Enab determines whether the buffer is normally on or off and Dirn sets input or output. The positions of these last two are dependent on the initialisation procedure required. The three main choices are: Fixed Input or Output : HOLD left, ENAB right. Reset Input or Output : HOLD right, ENAB left. Programmed In or Out : HOLD right, ENAB right. In the second case, the buffer will be ON after SYSRST but may be turned OFF under program control. In the third case the buffer will be OFF after SYSRST but may be turned ON. Operation All data output from the card is directed via a single parallel LSI device, IC11 an 8255A. The three 8- bit ports of this device are used as follows: Port A - Bit 0 : Solenoid 1 Port A - Bit 1 : Solenoid 2 Port A - Bit 2 : Solenoid 3 Port A - Bit 3 : Solenoid 4 Port A - Bit 4 : Solenoid 5 Page 1

2 STE-SD16LP Page 2 Port A - Bit 5 : Solenoid 6 Port A - Bit 6 : Solenoid 7 Port A - Bit 7 : Solenoid 8 Port B - Bit 0 : Solenoid 9 Port B - Bit 1 : Solenoid 10 Port B - Bit 2 : Solenoid 11 Port B - Bit 3 : Solenoid 12 Port B - Bit 4 : Solenoid 13 Port B - Bit 5 : Solenoid 14 Port B - Bit 6 : Solenoid 15 Port B - Bit 7 : Solenoid 16 Port C, 0-7 : TTL Buffer 0-7 The 8255 occupies 4 addresses in the I/O map: Base_addr : Port A data Base_addr+1 : Port B data Base_addr+2 : Port C data Base_addr+3 : Control (mode and direction) For correct operation of the card, port A and port B must be set to OUTPUT following SYSRST. Port C may be used in a variety of ways, the simplest being byte-wide input or output. The control port (Base_addr+3) must be written with a control byte to select the correct modes: Control_O:=80H OUT(Base_addr+3,Control_0) : All ports are outputs. Control_I:=89H OUT(Base_addr+3,Control_1) : Port C input Data is then written to Port A at Base_addr, written to Port B at Base_addr+1, and read from or written to Port C at Base_addr+2. Power considerations On Board Regulator The 7912 regulator device, TR1, which provides bias for the opto-couplers is powered from the solenoid supplies VS+ and VS-. The input to this device is protected by diode D1 and decoupled by capacitor C1 which allows the solenoid supplies to be simple rectified A.C. (See diagram on p. 4). C1 normally has a rating of 25V and will need to be replaced if VS+ to VS- exceeds this value. At higher voltages the dissipation of TR1 must be considered. This will depend on the average duty cycle of the drivers and would typically be under 1watt with all drivers on continuously and 24V solenoid supply. At 25 C ambient TR1 will dissipate 2watts without excessive case temperature. Output Drivers The output devices fitted to SD16LP will handle in excess of 1amp each with a non-continuous duty cycle. At a loading of 1amp the typical device dissipation is 1.2watt which would lead to a total board dissipation (continuous operation) of 20watts or more. This would be catastrophic without forced air cooling direct to the board. With convection cooling, a guide figure for overall loading is 25% duty cycle at 1amp each output. (E.g. all devices operating at 25% on, or half the devices operating at 50% on, or some other combination. What has been said above applies to low frequency operation. At output switching frequencies above 1kHz. The dynamic device dissipation should also be considered.
