Startup Routine and Error Codes for MP 10.3 s Startup Routine After you turn on the scale with the key, the scale processor checks some of the weighing functions. The following appear one after the other in the display: - Display segments light up. - Display segments are blanked out. - The scale is ready to operate once the readout 0.0g/0g is displayed. Other display symbols will appear, depending on the menu codes, which are set in the scale operating program. Error Codes The scale is underloaded, e.g. the weighing platform is not in place or is improperly positioned, offset value adjustment or calibration was performed incorrectly, or the weighing system or the A/D converter are defective. The maximum capacity of the scale has been exceeded, e.g., the weight on the platform is too heavy, the scale has been improperly calibrated, or the weighing system is defective. Operating error, e.g., the reference weight is too small. Zero point error at the beginning of the calibration procedure, e.g., the scale has not been tared or has not been unloaded prior to the calibration procedure, the zero point is outside the tolerance limit (<=20% from the maximum load). The battery voltage is too low in the battery operation mode, recharge the battery. If the key symbol remains in the display, the processor is still busy processing a function and will not accept any command to perform other functions. Turn off the scale using the key and then on again. 10 Quality / Tolerance Status 01 / 93

Description of the Functions Operating Principle s of the model series QS-Mini and the TS VQ1 feature a weighing system which consists of a spring body with four strain gauges which are glued to the body. These strain gauges constitute a Wheatstone brigde which is supplied with a reference voltage of +11V. When a load is placed on the scale, the spring body is bent slightly. In the process, two of the four strain gauges are compressed and the other two are streched. This results in a change in resistance and, consequently, a change in voltage which is proportional to the load which was applied on the weighing platform. This voltage is transmitted to the summing point of the A/D converter via amplifier IC111, low-pass filter IC113 and resistor R167. In the A/D converter consisting of: SBS-2 IC108, integrator IC110, reference buffer IC112, resistor R167 (measuring voltage at the summing point), resistor R168 (reference voltage at the summing point), and capacitor C165 (integration capacitor) a digital measuring result is generated by the stabilized voltage from low-pass filter IC113. This result is transmitted to the scale processor IC104, which directly controls the display, depending on the weight unit wich was selected. The specific scale data and the calibration weight value are stored in the parameter EEPROM IC107. Via a built-in data interface (optional) it is possible to send data to peripherals. 16 Adjusting the Before you begin to adjust the scale, allow it to warm up for at least 30 minutes und run a function test. Important Note The numbers next to the components (e.g. main PCB (102/201)) refer to the exploded-view diagrams on pages 4 and 6. Adjustment Sequence Adjust the overload stops Adjust the zero point offset value Check the off-center load Adjust the linearity Calibrate the scale How to Open the Display Head You only need to open the display head if you wish to adjust the zero point or the linearity. All tests and calibration can be performed without opening the scale. - Disconnect the scale from line power. - Remove the 4 caps (105/204) from the rear panel of the display head (104/203). - Remove the 4 exposed screws (104A) from the rear panel of the display head (104/203). - Pull the front plate (101/208) with the main PCB (102/201) slightly out of the rear panel of the display head (104/203) and tilt it forward. - Now all components necessary for adjusting the zero point offset value and linearity are exposed. - To close the display head, proceed in the reverse order indicated above. 16 Quality / Tolerance Status 01 / 93

How to Access the Gross Value Mode To perform some adjustments, it is necessary to access the gross value mode. In the process, the uncalculated A/D converter value (gross value) appears in the weight display. - Switch the scale to the STANDBY mode by pressing the key. - Unload the scale (clear the weighing platform). - Hold down the key and the key and press the key. Release the key and key only after the readout shown on the left is displayed. - A positive value without a weight unit symbol is displayed. - To exit the gross value mode, press the key twice. Adjusting the Overload Stop Important Note In addition, please read the section entitled»differences between QS-Mini and TS VQ1 s«, on page 9. Adjusting the Overload Stops on the QS-Mini s Checking the Overload Stops Lower Center Stop Important Note The lower center stop is not visible during the checking and adjusting processes. Therefore, you must locate it by ear. - Center the maximum load (QS 4000 = 4 kg / QS 8000A = 8 kg / QS 16000B = 16 kg) on the weighing platform (120). - Press down on the loaded weight several times, and listen to make sure that the stop is free. Status 01 / 93 Quality / Tolerance 17

- Afterwards, increase the load in increments of 200 g until it equals the maximum load plus 1 kg. - After each load increase of 200g, check the lower center stop by pressing down on the weights several times. - When the maximum load plus 1 kg is reached, no sound from the stop may be heard. - If the stop sound cannot be heard before the maximum load plus 1 kg is reached or if the stop can still be heard when the maximum load plus 1 kg is reached, you must adjust the lower center stop. Upper Center Stop - Remove the weighing platform (120). - While the scale is unloaded, check the setting of the upper center stop (119) using a feeler gauge. There must be a space of 0.6 mm between the pan support (118) und the stop (119) (tolerance: +0.1 mm). - If the space is incorrect you must readjust the upper center stop. Corner Stops - Remove the weighing platform (120) and replace it upside down on the scale. - Place the maximum load (QS 4000 = 4 kg / QS 8000A = 8 kg / QS 18 Quality / Tolerance Status 01 / 93

16000B = 16 kg) on position 1 of the weighing platform (120). - Check the setting of the corresponding corner stop (115) using a feeler gauge. There must be a space of 0.25 mm between the pan support (118) and the stop (115). - If the space is incorrect you must readjust the corresponding corner stop. - Proceed as indicated above with positions 2 through 4. - When all of the overload stops are correctly positioned, you can continue with additional adjustments. Adjusting the Overload Stops Lower Center Stop Important Note The lower center stop is not visible during the checking and adjusting processes. Therefore, you must locate it by ear. - Place the scale on a stable raised base in such a way that you can adjust both of stop screws (113) from below. - Center the maximum load plus 1 kg (QS 4000 = 4 kg / QS 8000A = 8 kg / QS 16000B = 16 kg) on the weighing pan (120). - Loosen slowly both screws (113) until the stop is audible. - Turn one of the two screws (113) toward the stop. While doing so, check the space between the srew and the stop by pressing down repeatedly on the weight loaded. - In this way you will find the point where the screw (113) and the stop barely touch (no stop sound). Important Note In order to adjust the second stop screw (113), you have to temporarily turn the screw (113) that you before adjusted back ¼ of a turn. - Adjust the second screw (113) in the same way as the first. - When the second stop screw (113) is correctly adjusted, you can tighten the first stop screw ¼ of a turn. - When both stop screws (113) correctly adjusted, remove the scale from the raised base. Status 01 / 93 Quality / Tolerance 19

Upper Center Stop - Remove the weighing platform (120). - Adjust the upper center stop (119) while the scale is unloaded. - Adjust the upper center stop (119) so that there is a space of 0.6 mm (tolerance: mm) between the pan support (118) and the stop (119). Check the space using a feeler gauge. - When the space is of the correct size, replace the weighing platform (120). Corner Stops - Remove the weighing platform (120) and replace it upside down on the scale. - Place the maximum load (QS 4000 = 4 kg / QS 8000A = 8 kg / QS 16000B = 16 kg) on position 1 of the weighing platform (120). - Use a feeler gauge to determine the space between the corresponding corner stop (115) and the pan support (118). - To adjust the corner stops proceed according to the following example: - The actual value (space determined using a feeler gauge) is e.g. 1 mm. - The target value is 0.25 mm. - The difference (actual value minus target value) is 0.75 mm in our example. - The grade of the stop screw is 1 mm, i.e.: 1 turn clockwise increases the space by 1 mm 1 turn counter clockwise decreases the space by 1 mm - The setting adjustment results from the following: 1 turn of the stop screw changes the space by 1 mm. That means, in the example, that the stop screw must be adjusted ¾ of a turn counterclockwise (difference 0.75 mm). - To adjust the stop screw, remove the weights and the weighing platform (120). - Adjust the positions 2-4 corner stops in the same way. - After adjusting the stops, replace the weighing platform (120) on the scale. - When all of the overload stops correctly adjustet, you can continue with additional adjustments. 20 Quality / Tolerance Status 01 / 93

Adjusting Overload Stops on TS VQ1 Test Setup: - Remove the weighing platform (220). - Unscrew the four load receptor disks (219). - Gently pull the right and left hand sides of the upper part of housing (218) apart and lift off the housing cover. - Screw the four load receptor disks (219) onto the load receptor bases (217). - Replace the weighing platform (220). - After you have checked and, if necessary, adjusted the overload stops, reconstruct the TS VQ1 in reverse order. Checking the Overload Stops - Perform the test setup procedures. - Place the maximum load (TS VQ1 = 12 kg) on position 1 of the weighing platform (220). - The load receptor bases (217) of the loaded corner may not come into contact with the stop screw (213.A). - Increase the weight loaded 1 kg (TS VQ1 = 13 kg). - Now the load receptor bases (217) of the loaded corner must come into contact with the stop screw (213.A). - Check positions 2 through 4 in the same manner. - If the load receptor base (217) already touches the stop screw (213.A) when the maximum load is placed or if it does not touch the stop screw when the maximum load plus 1 kg is loaded, the stop screw (213.A) must be adjusted. - When all of the stop screws (213.A) are correctly adjusted, you can close the scale in reverse order and continue with additional adjustments. Status 01 / 93 Quality / Tolerance 21

Adjusting the Overload Stops - Perform the test setup procedures. - Access the gross value mode (see page 17). - Place the maximum load plus 1 kg (TS VQ1 = 13 kg) on the corner of the weighing platform (220) which is to be adjusted. - Loosen the lock nut (213.B) of the corresponding stop screw (213.A) and turn the stop screw (213.A) until the load receptor bases (217) is clear. - Slightly tighten the stop screw (213.A) until the stop screw and the load receptor bases (217) is established. - While doing this, please observe the gross value mode display. The readout will change as soon as the stop screw (213.A) contacts the load receptor bases (217). - In this way, locate the point where the stop screw (213.A) and the load receptor bases (217) come slightly into contact. - Secure the stop screw in this position using the lock nut (213.B). - Proceed in the same manner to adjust the other stops. - After adjusting all of the stops, recheck them. - Afterwards, close the scale in reverse order and continue with additional adjustments. How to Adjust the Zero Point Offset Value It is necessary to adjust the zero point offset value to adapt the bridge voltage of the strain gauge system to the operating range of the electronic components in the scale. This may be necessary if: -»L«or»H«is constantly displayed, -»L«remains in the display even after small weights have been placed on the weighing platform, -»H«is displayed before the maximum load is reached or - the error code»e«is displayed during calibration. How to Check the Zero Point Offset Value - Access the gross value mode (see page 17). - The gross value displayed with the scale unloaded should be approx. + 8,455 (allowable tolerance range: + 6, ,700). - If the displayed gross value is outside this tolerance range, the zero point must be readjusted. 22 Quality / Tolerance Status 01 / 93

Zero Point Offset Value Data Zero Point Offset Model Test Weight Target Value Tolerance Range QS 4000 Unloaded scale + 8, , ,700 QS 8000 A Unloaded scale + 8, , ,700 QS B Unloaded scale + 8, , ,700 TS VQ1 Unloaded scale + 8, , ,700 How to Adjust the Zero Point Offset Value - Open the display head (see page 16). - Locate the position of balancing resistors R190 and R192 on the main PCB (102/201) (see»overview of the Test Points«page 34). - Desolder balancing resistors R190 and R Connect a resistor decade box to the main PCB (102/201) in place of resistor R Adjust the largest resistance possible on the decade box. - Reconnect the scale to line power. - Access the gross value mode (see page 17). - Change the setting on the resistor decade box until the gross value displayed is approx. + 8, Read off the resistance indicated on the decade box and locate the next higher resistor of the E12 standard. Example: kohm (decade box) yields 4.7 kohm (resistor) - Unplug the scale from line power and disconnect the resistor decade box. - Solder the determined resistor on position R190 of the main PCB (102/201). - Aferwards, recheck the zero point offset value (see page 22). - Now you can make additional fine adjustments of the zero point offset value using parallel resistor R Proceeding as indicated above, connect the resistor decade box parallel to resistor R190, which has already been soldered onto the main PCB (102/201). Now solder the determined resistor to position R192 on the main PCB (102/201). - After you have adjusted the zero point offset value, close the display head. Status 01 / 93 Quality / Tolerance 23

Checking the Off-Center Load How to Check the Off-Center Load - Compare the values displayed with the tolerances indicated below. Off-Center Load Data - Turn on the scale by pressing the key. - Place the off-center load test weight on position 1 on the weighing platform (120/220). - Tare the scale by pressing the key. - Place the test weight on each of the positions 2 through 5 (in sequence) and write down the values displayed: Example (QS 4000): Pos g Pos g Pos g Pos g Pos g Model Off-Center Load Test Weight Off-Center Load Testing Surface Off-Center Load Tolerance QS ,000 g / ø = 60 mm at the brim of the pan <=± 0.4 g QS 8000 A 5,000 g / ø = 80 mm at the brim of the pan <=± 0.4 g QS B 10,000 g / ø = 100 mm at the brim of the pan <=± 1 g TS VQ1 10,000 g / ø = 100 mm at the brim of the pan <=± 2 g Adjusting the Off-Center Load To adjust the off-center load, you must have special knowledge about the strain gauge system which cannot be explained in detail in this service manual. However, adjustment of the off-center load is covered in the corresponding service training course. For more information, please contact Sartorius AG in Goettingen, Germany, or the Sartorius Training Center. Adjusting the Linearity How to Check the Linearity - Check the linearity for the entire weighing range (capacity) in increments of 500 g or 1,000 g. - Compare the values displayed with the tolerances indicated below. If the deviations are larger, the linearity must be adjusted. 24 Quality / Tolerance Status 01 / 93

Linearity Data Model Capacity / Range Linearity QS ,000 g <=± 0.1 g QS 8000 A 8,000 g <=± 0.2 g QS B 16,000 g <=± 0.5 g TS VQ1 12,100 g <=± 1 g How to Adjust the Linearity - Open the display head (see page 16). - Locate the position of balancing resistor R186 on the main PCB (102/201) (see»overview of the Test Points«page 34). - Desolder resistor R Connect the scale to line power. - Calibrate the scale while in the gross value mode (see page 27). - Unload the scale and tare. - Place one half of the load (½ of the calibration weight) on the scale and tare. - Unload the scale and write down the readout. - Place the entire load (calibration weight) on the scale and write down the readout. - Compare the readouts and calculate the difference. Example (QS 4000): Half of the load g Entire load g Difference 0.5 g - Using this difference, you can now determine which balancing resistor from the table below should be used. - In this example (QS linearity 0.5 g) a 3.3 MOhm resistor should be used. Imporant Note Be aware that the resistors listed in this table are guidelines. Depending on the particular scale, it might be necessary to use the next higher or next lower resistor. - Disconnect the scale from line power. - Solder the determined resistor to position R186 on the main PCB (102/201). - Afterwards, recheck the linearity (see page 24). - After you have adjusted the linearity, close the display head. Calibration in the Weighing Mode Here, calibration is performed in the same manner as for other SARTORIUS s and Balances. In the process, QS-Mini s and the TS VQ1 only accept calibration weights which are within a tolerance range of 2% of the calibration weight value. 2. Calibration in the Gross Value Mode Here, the tolerance limits are eliminated and QS-Mini s and the TS VQ1 accept only a calibration weight which is above the zero point threshold (20% of the maximum load). This is often required for servicing the scale, e.g., after adjusting the zero point offset value, after exchanging PCB s, after exchanging the strain gauge system or after exchanging the parameter EEPROM. Calibrating the in the Weighing Mode - Turn the scale off by pressing the key. - Unload the scale (clear the weighing platform (120/220)). - Hold down the key and press the key. Release the key only after the readout shown on the left is displayed. - Retare the scale using the key, then press the the key to start the calibration routine. - The calibration weight now appears in the display along with the»+«sign and without a weight value. 26 Quality / Tolerance Status 01 / 93

- Center the required weight on the weighing platform (120/220). - If this weight is correct, the»+«sign will go out in the display. Explanation of the plus and minus signs:»+«- the loaded calibration weight is too light»-«- the loaded calibration weight is too heavy or»+/-«goes out in the displ. - the loaded calibration weight is within the tolerance range and is accepted. - After a short time the processor IC104 will accept the calibration weight value, and the»+«sign, the weight unit»g«as well as the analog bar graph will appear in the display. - Unload the scale. Now the scale is ready to operate. Calibrating the in the Gross Value Mode - Turn the scale off by pressing the key. - Unload the scale (clear the weighing platform). - Hold down the key and the key and press the key. Release the key and the key only after the readout shown on the left is displayed. - A positive value without a weight unit symbol is now displayed. - To start the calibration routine, press the key. - The calibration weight is displayed without a plus or minus sign and without a weight unit symbol. - Center the required weight on the weighing platform (120/220). - After a short time the processor IC104 will accept the calibration weight value, and the»+«sign, the weight unit»g«as well as the analog bar graph will appear in the display. - Unload the scale. Now the scale is ready to operate. Status 01 / 93 Quality / Tolerance 27

Repairing the When repairing QS-Mini and the TS VQ1, we recommend that you exchange complete component groups if a defect is located because the strain gauge system (116/211) is a complete unit in itself and the main PCB (102/201) is equipped with SMD components (Surface Mounted Devices) technology. It is not possible to exchange the surface-mount components without using special tools. Therefore, SARTORIUS supports this type of service by exchanging defective PCB s at economical prices. The following component groups or individual parts may be exchanged using standard tools and equipment. In case of repair: strain gauge system (116/211) main PCB (102/201) parameter EEPROM IC107 LC display AZ101 data interface YDO 01 TS (optional) For adjustment purposes or to be transferred from the old main PCB (102/201) to the new PCB: resistors R190 and R192 for adjusting the zero point offset value resistors R151 - R154 and R156 - R159 for TC (temperature coefficient) compensation resistor R186 for adjusting the linearity If your workshop is equipped with the special tools for exchanging surface-mount components, you may repair PCB s at the component level. In this case the»table of Test Points«(see page 3) and the»overview of the Test Points«(see page 34) will help you to more quickly locate any defective components. After repairing the scale, check the scale functions over a long time period, if possible. Pay special attention to drift, the zero point offset value and calibration. Important Note The numbers next to the components (e.g. main PCB (102/201)) refer to the exploded-view diagrams on pages 4 and 6. How to Exchange the Main PCB - Open the display head (see page 16). - Unplug the weighing system interface cable from position St.3, the line voltage connection cable from position St.7 and if necessary the interface cable from position St.1 of the main PCB (102/201). 28 Quality / Tolerance Status 01 / 93
