NEW MK 5 Series Class II Biological Safety Cabinet Applications Biological safety cabinets are defined in Australian Standard AS2647 as the primary barrier against exposure to aerosols that may be produced from common microbiology procedures. In addition to protection for personnel and the room environment, many work programmes require that products are protected from airborne contamination.

3 The Mk 5 Series cabinets provide: personnel environment product protection in applications involving hazardous biological agents which AS classifies in Risk Groups 2 and 3. PLEASE NOTE These cabinets are not designed for use with biological agents of extreme hazard. For applications involving cytotoxic drugs, Contamination Control Laboratories Cytotoxic Drug Safety Cabinets (AS2567) should be specified. Australian Standards AS2252, Part 2 specified requirements for Class II cabinets, and AS2647 is a guide to their installation and use. Test procedures for safety cabinets are described in AS1807. Mk 5 Series cabinets are designed and manufactured to comply in full with AS2252, Part 2, and each cabinet is factory certified by a NATA-registered laboratory to meet the specified performance requirements. Description The Mk 5 Series cabinets are part-recirculating laminar airflow enclosures with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration of exhaust air and an air barrier at the work opening. Cabinets are produced with nominal work zone widths of: 90cm 120cm 180cm and can be installed on standard laboratory benches or the various optional floor stands / trolleys. and have the standard exhaust options located internally on the: Left side Right Side Top of the cabinet. HEPA-filtered vertical laminar airflow, which is recirculated in the work-zone, creates an ultra-clean work environment for product protection. An air barrier between the operator and the work zone is maintained by a flow of room air into a full-width grille in the work opening. The barrier air mixes with the laminar flow air in a sump underneath the work surface, and is exhausted via a HEPA filter. All positive pressure zones and filter seals in the cabinet is surrounded by negative pressure zones, so as to contain potentially hazardous aerosols. Construction

4 Cabinet. Constructed in electro-galvanised steel with joints welded using a gas-shielded arc process. This method produces a robust, gas-tight housing, which is able to withstand the rigours of transport and handling. The exterior finish of the cabinet (shell) is constructed of zincseal steel, undercoated and finished in a twopack laboratory grade polyurethane enamel that is solvent, alkali and acid resistant. Work zone. Constructed in Grade 304 stainless steel with 2B finish. Corners are radiused and crevice-free for ease of cleaning and all surfaces are carefully dressed to remove sharp edges. The truly versatile and removable work tray has been designed so as to allow cleaning access to its underside without removing it from the cabinet.

5 A removable panel provides cleaning and service access to the rear plenum. The viewing window is self-supporting in the fully open position to facilitate cleaning and access for large items. This window is manufactured from 6mm laminated safety glass. A pneumatic mechanism assists the opening and closing of the viewing window without the need for external fasteners or catches. Fans. Opening the window with the cabinet running automatically engages a boost mode for enhanced containment by activating maximum exhaust airflow and the alarm systems. Separate direct-drive fans are provided for the exhaust and laminar flow HEPA filters. Fans are speedcontrolled to enable airflows to be maintained through filter life. The fan control circuits are interlocked so that the laminar flow system will not operate until the exhaust system has achieved a containment condition. An audible alarm with rechargeable battery back up and visible indicators signify any reduction in airflows. A manometer gauge located in the work zone monitors fan / filter system pressures. Construction HEPA filters. Each filter is individually certified to achieve an arrestance efficiency of not less than % to the stringent BS3948 Sodium Flame test and to be leak-free in accordance with AS All testing is conducted in a NATA-registered factory laboratory and a NATA-endorsed test label, being an extract of the text report, is affixed to each filter. 6 General information regarding HEPA filters. HEPA & ULPA Filters are one of three main classes air filtration products that can be economically supplied and professionally installed by Contamination Control Laboratories (CCL). The other two main classes of air filtration products include Carbon filters and Pre-Filters. HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) and ULPA (Ultra Low Penetration Air) filters are the most efficient air filters commercially available. Originally developed in the 1940's and 1950's by the U.S. Army Chemical Corp, Naval Research Laboratories and Atomic Energy Commission, HEPA filters have a minimum efficiency of 99.99% for particles down to 0.3 microns. Absolute filters are made of glass fibre paper with fibre diameter around 1µ. The paper is folded to provide a net effective filtering area between 25 and 75 times greater than the face area of the filter. Consequently the velocity through the filter paper becomes very low usually not more than m/s creating a wholly laminar airflow condition through the filter and around the filter fibres. Due to the fragile construction of HEPA / ULPA filters Contamination Control Laboratories (CCL) recommend that only trained professionals install these types of filters. Improper installation can cause irreparable damage and non-compliance during testing (AS ). The Mk 5 microprocessor, control and diagnostic system provides continuous monitoring of critical cabinet functions with a digital display indicating the nature of any malfunction. Regular maintenance will ensure protection for your workers and the sterility of products which may require manipulation in these special areas. Contamination Control Laboratories provides a comprehensive testing and certification service for all clean air applications. This essential service is your assurance that the stated performance criteria of your laminar flow facility is maintained. We also certify that the work area has a cleanliness level which is equal to or better than Class that is, less than 3.5 particles per litre of 0.5 mircometres and greater in size. Our laboratory is National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) registered to perform field-testing of all high-efficiency Absolute or High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) air filter installations (HEPA filters demand an efficiency greater than percent to a 0.3 micrometre test aerosol). NATA is an independent organization which registers laboratories in many fields of testing. To meet NATA requirements, a laboratory must have appropriately qualified testing and administrative personnel as well as equipment, capable of measuring performance with a high degree of accuracy and consistency. All equipment is registered and regularly calibrated to the appropriate standard and the registered laboratory is periodically re-assessed to ensure maintenance of standards.
