2 Interpower Power Entry Modules s Interpower power entry modules play an important role in the design and development of the power entry segment of equipment. The advantages of Interpower modules include user safety and reduction of common power entry components. The IEC C power inlet is the most common means of connecting a detachable cable assembly to equipment. Once the cable assembly is connected, other components are necessary to control the electrical power protecting the equipment and the user. These components can create clutter on the equipment panel and a wiring problem on the inside. To simplify the problem, Interpower Components td. provides multiple power entry components in one product. This provides multiple forms of protection and control in one compact unit. Interpower power entry modules are available from 2 to 5 function versions. The modules are ideal for use in a variety of applications, including information technology and medical applications. When properly specified for a particular application, Interpower power entry modules offer one or more of the following benefits: Increase User Safety The risk of accidents is reduced when using a power entry module. The design of most modules makes it necessary to remove the power cord assembly from the unit prior to making any changes like fuse replacement and/or voltage selection. Interlocking the power entry connector with access to other module functions reduces the probability of accidental shock by the user. Save Panel Space Power entry modules combine several power entry components into one panel mounting system, saving panel space. s Interpower modules are smaller than most. This reduces the mounting hole size, thus saving valuable space on the mounting surface (See Figure 1). Reduce ssembly abour Power entry modules can reduce installation labour costs. The combination of several components into one package reduces the number of components that must be handled. ssembly labour costs may be reduced through the internal connections that are a part of some modules. ower Component Management and Costs While power entry modules rarely save money when compared to direct material cost, the savings in assembly, engineering, and materials handling time warrants serious consideration. Reducing the number of components used in equipment avoids a waste of valuable engineering time through reduction in testing and documentation recording for component and agency approvals. Materials, handling, and purchasing time are also reduced through reduction in inventory. 4 is pleased to introduce the new Interpower multifunction, power entry modules. Interpower modules make designing and manufacturing easier. When developing power entry designs for equipment, original equipment manufacturers will be pleased to find a quality product with design choices and options making the design and manufacture process less complicated. Quality ll Interpower modules are 100% tested. These tests include dielectric strength and continuity. This assures the modules will work in applications for which they were designed. Introducing the EW Interpower Multifunction Power Entry Modules ll Interpower power entry modules meet or exceed requirements of the U, CS, and VE approval agencies. This shortens the process of acquiring approvals on equipment. dditional testing of components is unnecessary when approved components are used. Specifying modules with U, CS, and VE approvals, allows only one component to be ordered and stocked when manufacturing equipment for orth merican and international applications. Specifying a Module When selecting a module, functions and mounting orientation need to be addressed. The Interpower power entry modules are available with a variety of component combinations and two mounting styles. The components are listed below with a brief description of the functions that will impact the specification decision (See Figure 2). C Power Inlet The modules direct power into the equipment using an IEC sheet C14 power inlet. The C14 is a Class I grounded connection device and is used with the C13 connector. The C13 connector is accepted internationally, making it easy to select the correct cordset from Interpower Components, td.. Current ratings for the C14 power inlet are normally 10 for international applications. Power Switch The power switch keeps the power control near the source of power on the equipment. ll switches used in the modules are double-pole, single-throw switches, making it ideal for use in medical applications around the world. The switch controls both the line and neutral conductors. Module power switches are normally rated at 4 10 at 250VC. The availability of vertically or horizontally marked switches makes it possible to meet the IEC standards for correct marking alignment on switches (See Optional Switch section on page 21). 5 Fuse older Interpower power entry modules can be used with either 1 4 x in. or 5X20mm fuses (See Figure 3). They are available in single or double fused versions. The design of the Interpower power entry module allows you to quickly change a single fused module to double fusing simply by removing the fuse substitution clip. In a single fused module, the clip must be positioned on the neutral side of the circuit for the module to work (See Figure 3). Call Customer Service at to order fuses separately. By changing the selection device, this allows the user to define the correct input voltage. Voltage selection changes are made by removing the fuse holder and rotating it (See Figure 4). Filtering Filters play an important part in equipment design, especially in high frequency and medical equipment applications. Interpower filtered power entry modules are available with or without a metal shield, typically specified in high frequency applications. RFI/EMI filters n RFI filter is an electrical circuit that is designed to remove electromagnetic and radio frequency interference (noise) from the equipment in order to prevent malfunctions due to interference and to prevent the equipment from radiating noise, which might interfere with other equipment. The typical frequency filtered is 10,000 z to 30,000,000 z for noise picked up and conducted through external wires or power cords. 30,000,000 z to 1 z is the frequency filtered for noise that is radiating and being picked up through the air. Insertion oss Insertion loss is the value (in db) determined from a ratio of the voltage passed through the equipment without filtering, versus the voltage passed through the equipment with filtering. Common mode insertion loss is used to express the amount of signal lost on both the line and neutral conductors (when referenced to ground), due to removal of interference or noise by the filter circuit. ifferential mode insertion loss is used to express the amount of signal lost on either the line or neutral conductors (when referenced to the other, i.e. between line and neutral), due to removal of interference or noise by the filter circuit. Medical Power Entry Modules Medical equipment must meet special requirements. These requirements place special significance on fusing and filtering when selecting components used in medical equipment. Patient-connected medical equipment can be subjected to low-leakage current requirements. The use of a low leakage filter in the 5µ range at 250VC is desirable. In addition, fusing of both line and neutral connectors may be required (i.e. double fusing). Mounting The Interpower power entry modules are available in both snap-in and screw mount versions to meet design requirements. Space limitations are an important reason for using power entry modules. 18 Interpower 2 Function Modules rated at 2.5 International 2.5 Class I Module International 2.5 Class II Module The IEC C5 connectors and C6 inlets and modules have three-pins, which include a ground contact. Originally intended for use on sewing machines, this coupler is now finding applications on laptop computers. This presence of a ground at the equipment allows designers to incorporate a high performance radio frequency (RFI) interference filter into the inlet. ll C5 connectors must be moulded onto cable; rewirable versions are not permitted. The coupler pair described in standard sheets C7 and C8 is another example of an IEC configuration with new life. This coupler has no ground contact. C7 and C8 couplers were originally developed for use in devices such as electric razors, radios, and other home entertainment appliances. ow this coupler pair is finding use on laptop computers. In some cases, the power connection is made at the back of the laptop itself. 20 Extenders Multifunction Power Entry Module Options Extenders for 8354 Series Snap-in Modules The availability and use of extenders allow for easy conversion to Interpower modules without having to make expensive changes to the mounting cutout hole. In most instances, the change of modules would necessitate a redesign of the mounting panel cutout hole. With extenders, Interpower modules can possibly be adapted to current cutouts. offers three different size extenders to make this transition as easy as possible. The extenders snap in place to enlarge the mounting dimensions of the module to match the existing mounting hole size. The & extenders are to be placed on the end opposite the inlet (See Figure 5). The extender is to be placed on the side of the module. The extenders are for the snap-in version modules and are available for all snap-in modules with the exception of the snap-in shielded modules. Interpower module switches are marked with the international on/off markings. To meet IEC and U standards for switch markings, the orientation of the O mark, a straight line (I), should have the mark in the vertical position. Standard 8354 series modules are configured for horizontal mounting applications (See Figure 6). Modules for vertical mount applications should be specified with the correct switch (See Figure 7). Changes to the switch marking orientation can be made through purchase of the correct switch and special ordered from The correct switch can be ordered and fitted in all non-filtered modules. When a filtered or shielded module is required, the module can be special ordered with a short lead time. Wire arness 2 & 4-Position Wire arnesses for 8354 Series Modules fter selecting the right module for your design and application, the method used to make electrical connections from the module s components to your equipment and power source must be determined. Standard and custom wiring harnesses and jumper wires are available to make wiring the modules to your equipment easy (See Figure 8). stocks standard length harnesses that connect to the back of the modules making assembly easy. Custom harnesses made to your specifications are also available. The 2-wire harness makes electrical connections between the module and the equipment. The 4-wire harness is used when the user selects the voltage level needed, based on the power source available. The 4-wire harness permits wiring to a transformer placed between the power entry module and the equipment components (See Figure 9).
