The available languages are Italian, English and German. 2.3 COMMUNICATION Select your ECU The software GRIPONE PRO 2 permit to manage the GRIPONE PRO ECU and GRIPONE PRO 2 ECU. This two version use a different communication protocol. To avoid any problem before connect the ECU to the computer by USB cable please select the correct version of your ECU. The program will keep in mind the choice did the first time (until the user will change the selection).
2.3.2 Manual Config. COM The ECU use a USB port as VCP (Virtual Com Port). The software is able to recognize automatically the com port number. For that reason the flag MANUAL CONFIG COM must be not checked. If some problem accors on recognize of COM port, please check this flag and select manually the COM port. Fig.4 NOTE. Before select manually the COM port push button UPDATE PROGRAM ECU e READ ECU The software can program the ECU (data from PC to ECU) and read from ECU (data from ECU to PC). To program the ECU follow this step: 1. Set the value of parameters (following the user demand) included into the TRACTION CONTROL and HARDWARE groups; 2. Set the value of parameters (following the user demand) of GEAR SHIFT FORCE and GEAR SHIFT TIME (in ADVANCED screen; 3. Switch on the ECU; 4. Connect the USB cable; 5. Press the button PROGRAM ECU; 6. Wait the procedure of programming. At the end of programmino procedure all the parameters of group TRACTIONC CONTROL and HARDWARE (plus the GEAR SHIFT FORCE and GEAR SHIFT TIME) will saved in to the memory of ECU. Please read the specification of configuration parameters in the next paragraph. The software are able to read the datas saved in to the memory of ECU and set the parameters of the program. To read the parameters saved in to the ECU press the button READ ECU. Follow this steps to proceed correctly. 1. Switch on the ECU; 2. Connect the USB cable; 3. Press the button READ ; 4. Wait the end of procedure; At the end of procedure the value of parameters will be updated with the value saved in to the memory of ECU. 2.4 GAS INITIALIZE The ECU GRIPONE PRO 2 is able to read the signal who come from the TPS (throttle position sensor). This feature give the opportunity to optimize the action of traction control. By the throttle position the user can increase the sensitive of system on the maximum angle on banking and decrease the control ans sensitive of system in to the wide open area (to optimize the acceleration). To be able to use this feature the user must initialize the throttle position. To do this please follow these steps: 1. Switch on the ECU; 2. Connect the USB cable; 3. Switch on the bike (keeping off the engine); 4. Fix the throttle grip to the maximum opening (completely opend) and press the button SET GAS 100%; 5. Wait the message by a pop-up window; 6. Fix the throttle grip to the minimum opening (completely closed) and press the button SET GAS 0%; 7. Wait the message by a pop-up window; 8. Disconnect the USB cable; 9. Switch off the ECU; 2.5 HARDWARE The group HARDWARE contains Il gruppo HARDWARE contiene i parametri di configurazione legati ai sensori di velocità e al segnale dei giri motore (RPM) WHEEL PULSE To calculate the right veichle speed the ECU have to know the number of pulse read from wheel sensors. Set the correct number of pulse (read for each turn of wheel) pushing the + and - buttons. The value must be included between 3 and 8.
2.5.2 WHEEL DIMENSION To calculate the right veichle speed the ECU have to know the dimension of tyres. The dimension needed from the ECU is the development of tyres (se the figure below). Set the correct dimension (Centimeters) of the wheels pushing the + and - buttons. The value must be included between 180 and RPM SIGNAL Fig.5 The RPM signal is automatically get from he ECU by the plug&play harness. In some application the ECU read 1 pulse for cam shaft revolution, in some other application the ECU read 1 pulse for crank shaft revolution (= 2 pulse for cam shaft revolution). By this parameter the user can choose the right origin of RPM signal. If the user is using the plug&play harness can fix 1 pulse / cam shaft rev. If the user is using the Universal harness and get the RPM signal from the crank shaft sensor he must fix 1 pulse for crank shaft / rev REMOTE CONTROL The ECU has a external channel that permit the connection to the Remote control standard. This external device permit to the user to change the sensitive of ECU by a lever switch (fit on the handlebar of the bike). Without Remote control or with remote control standard positioned on OFF the ECU works normally. In this situation the ECU use the parameters of THRESHOLD (1 THRESHOULD, 2 THRESHOULD and 3 THRESHOULD). When the Remote control standard is ON the sensitive of ECU is changed by the parameter SHIFT OF THRESHOLD. 1 THRESHOULD, 2 THRESHOULD and 3 THRESHOULD will be shift up to reduce the sensitive. Example: THRESHOLD SETTING REMOTE CONTROL SETTING REAL VALUE READ FORM ECU 1 THRESHOULD = 4 SHIFT OF THRESHOLD = 2 And Remote control ON 1 THRESHOULD = 6 2 THRESHOULD = 8 3 THRESHOULD = 10 1 THRESHOULD = 4 SHIFT OF THRESHOLD = 2 And Remote control OFF (or disconnected) 1 THRESHOULD = 4 NOTE. This option can help the user in two different situations: N.1 The user can fix SHIFT OF THRESHOLD = 2 (or 3) and test two differents sensitive, during the riding, without stop the bike. Simply fitting the remote control standard OFF the user can test the normal map, then changing the position of switch (on handlebar) the user can test the less sensitive map. N.2 Sometimes when tyre drops the control of ECU become too invasive. The user can fix SHIFT OF THRESHOLD = 1 and remote control switch to OFF. The rider can start to ride; then after some laps (when the tyres drops) the rider can switch the Remote control to ON (to reduce the sensitive of system). By this option the user can arrange the maps without stop the bike. 2.6 TRACTION CONTROL In this group there are the parameters who control the work of ECU when rear tyre start to slide. All this parameters fix the sensitive of traction control system and the amount of control on the power.
Fig SENSITIVE The ECU use these parameters to fix the sensitive: 1 THRESHOULD, 2 THRESHOULD and 3 THRESHOULD. The three threshold are three different levels of sliding allowed by the ECU. Logic operation During the normal drive the ECU check the speed on both wheels and the percentage of spinning of rear tyre. When the percentage of sliding become bigger than value of 1 THRESHOLD, the ECU start to control the engine power. The amount of control (on the engine power) is calculate by the parameters 1 CONTROL. If the amount of control is enough to reduce the sliding, its percentage drop under 1 THRESHOLD. If the control is not enough to reduce the sliding, the percentage still goes up. If the percentage become bigger than value of 2 THRESHOLD, the ECU increase the control to the engine. The amount of control (on the engine power) is calculate by the parameters 2 CONTROL. If the control is enough to reduce the spinning, the percentage drop under 2 THRESHOLD. If the control is not enough to reduce the spinning, the percentage still goes up. if the percentage become bigger than value of 3 THRESHOLD, the ECU increase the control to the engine. The amount of control (on the engine power) is calculate by the parameters 3 CONTROL. If the control is enough to reduce the spinning, the percentage drop under 3 THRESHOLD. If the control is not enough to reduce the spinning, the ECU increase automatically the control on the power. By this kind of logic the ECU increase the control of the power step by step giving to the rider a very smooth feeling. NOTE To increase the sensitive of ECU please fix 1 THRESHOLD, 2 THRESHOLD and 3 THRESHOLD to small value (1, 2, 3 ) To reduce the sensitive of ECU please fix 1 THRESHOLD, 2 THRESHOLD and 3 THRESHOLD to big value (6, 7, 8 ) To increase the progression of traction control keep the gap between THRESHOLD very small ( example: 1 THRESHOULD=1, 2 THRESHOULD=2 and 3 THRESHOULD=3). To reduce the progression of traction control keep the gap between THRESHOLD very big ( example: 1 THRESHOULD=1, 2 THRESHOULD=4 and 3 THRESHOULD=7) POWER CONTROL The ECU use these parameters to fix the amount of control (on the engine power): 1 CONTROL, 2 CONTROL and 3 CONTROL. If the user want a big control (by the ECU) he ha sto fix a big value of 1 CONTROL, 2 CONTROL and 3 CONTROL. NOTE When the percentage of sliding goes up to 1 THRESHOLD the EU reduce the power using the value of 1 CONTROL. When the percentage of sliding goes up to 2 THRESHOLD the EU reduce the power using the value of 2 CONTROL. When the percentage of sliding goes up to 3 THRESHOLD the EU reduce the power using the value of 3 CONTROL. By this logic operating it is very important chose the good value of CONTROL to get a right progression of control.
If the user want a high progression of control please fix the gap between 1 CONTROL, 2 CONTROL and 3 CONTROL very big (example 1 CONTROL=2, 2 CONTROL=5 and 3 CONTROL= 9). If the user want a low progression of control please fix the gap between 1 CONTROL, 2 CONTROL and 3 CONTROL very small (example 1 CONTROL=4, 2 CONTROL=5 and 3 CONTROL= 6) GAS WIDE OPENING AREA Fig.7 By the TPS (throttle position sensor) The ECU can change the sensitive (to the spinning) by the banking of the bike. The GAS WIDE OPENING AREA is the zone where the throttle is over to a specific percentage (example Throttle > 90%). In this zone the bike should be picked up (or completely up). The parameters available to adjust this area are: % MIN GAS; SHIFT OF THRESHOLD and REDUCTION CONTROL. % MIN GAS This parameter fix the percentage minimum of GAS WIDE OPENING AREA. If (for example) this parameter is fixed to 90, when the opening of throttle is bigger than 90% the ECU active the control (and sensitive) of GAS WIDE OPENING AREA. SHIFT OF THRESHOLD When the ECU active the GAS WIDE OPENING AREA the sensitive of ECU is calculated by 1 THRESHOLD, 2 THRESHOLD, 3 THRESHOLD and SHIFT OF THRESHOLD. When the ECU active the GAS WIDE OPENING AREA the sensitive of system could be equal or less than normal THRESHOLD SETTING GAS WIDE OPENING AREA SHIFT OF THRESHOLD 1 THRESHOULD = 4 1 THRESHOULD = 4 REAL VALUE READ FORM ECU FOR SENSITIVE OFF 2 1 THRESHOULD = 4 ON 2 1 THRESHOULD = 6 2 THRESHOULD = 8 3 THRESHOULD = 10 REDUCTION CONTROL When the ECU active the GAS WIDE OPENING AREA the amount of control on the power is calculated by 1 CONTROL, 2 CONTROL, 3 CONTROL and REDUCTION CONTROL.. CONTROL SETTING GAS WIDE OPENING AREA REDUCTION CONTROL 1 CONTROL = 4 2 CONTROL = 6 3 CONTROL = 8 1 CONTROL = 4 2 CONTROL = 6 3 CONTROL = 8 REAL VALUE READ FORM ECU FOR CONTROL OFF 2 1 CONTROL = 4 2 CONTROL = 6 3 CONTROL = 8 ON 2 1 CONTROL = 2 2 CONTROL = 4 3 CONTROL = 6 NOTE When the rider open the throttle completely it means that he want a good acceleration from the bike. Automatically he is picking up the bike (reducing the banking angle). This option give the opportunity to improve the acceleration on the last part of the corner (where more power is requested). To increase a lot the acceleration use this configuration: %MIN GAS = 80; SHIFT OF THRESHOLD = 2 REDUCTION CONTROL = 2.
When rider complain about wheely could be necessary reduce the effect of this option. In this situation the ECU must keep the control even when the rider open completely the throttle. To keep a control from the ECU for the wheely use this configuration: %MIN GAS = 95; SHIFT OF THRESHOLD = 1 REDUCTION CONTROL = GAS BOTTOM OPENING AREA By the TPS (throttle position sensor) The ECU can change the sensitive (to the spinning) by the banking of the bike. The GAS BOTTOM OPENING AREA is the zone where the throttle is under a specific percentage (example Throttle < 20%). In this zone the bike should be on maximum banking angle. The parameters available to adjust this area are: % MAX GAS; SHIFT OF THRESHOLD. % MAX GAS This parameter fix the percentage maximum of GAS BOTTOM OPENING AREA. If (for example) this parameter is fixed to 20, when the opening of throttle is smaller than 20% the ECU active the sensitive fixed for GAS BOTTOM OPENING AREA. SHIFT OF THRESHOLD When the ECU active the GAS BOTTOM OPENING AREA the sensitive of ECU is calculated by 1 THRESHOLD, 2 THRESHOLD, 3 THRESHOLD and SHIFT OF THRESHOLD. When the ECU active the GAS BOTTOM OPENING AREA the sensitive of system could be equal or more than normal THRESHOLD SETTING GAS BOTTOM OPENING AREA SHIFT OF THRESHOLD 1 THRESHOULD = 4 1 THRESHOULD = 4 REAL VALUE READ FORM ECU FOR SENSITIVE OFF 1 1 THRESHOULD = 4 ON 1 1 THRESHOULD = 3 2 THRESHOULD = 5 3 THRESHOULD = 7 NOTE When the rider stat to open the throttle the bike is on maximum banking angle. That means that the ECU must be more sensitive than normal to avoid dangerous sliding. To give to the rider a good control and sensitive by the ECU please fix this value on the parameters: %MAX GAS = 25; SHIFT OF THRESHOLD = 2. Sometimes some rider use the sliding to turn the bike in the middle of the corner. To avoid any bad feeling from ECU fix this configuration: %MAX GAS = 10; SHIFT OF THRESHOLD = WIZARD TRACTION CONTROL This button open a additonal window. This window start a easy procedure to help the user to config the ECU. The user have to select some options and the software will fix automatically the parameters of TRACTION CONTROL group. The preference are: level of the rider (amateur, semi profi and professional); the amount of control on the power of engine (min, normal or max); the anti wheely effect (min, normal or max). The user have to choose the options and press the button OK. 3.0 ADVANCED Fig.8 The most used parameters are icluded on the main screen of the software. However there are some more parameters to get some special function by pressing the ADVANCED button. A new advanced window will appear. The Advanced window is divided into 5 groups:: GEAR SHIFT, ADVANCED, GAS MONITORING, GEAR SENSOR MONITORING E REMOTE CONTROL MONITORING.
3.1 GEAR SHIFT In this group the user can find the parameters to fix the external module Shift-Up, used for quick shifting GEAR SHIFT FORCE Fig.9 The external module Shift-Up use a sensor on the gear shift lever. The sensor could be a linear potentiometer (who read the lever stroke) of a load cell (who read the pressure of rider on the lever). If the external module use a linear potentiometer the parameter GEAR SHIFT FORCE fix the stroke of sensor before start the quick shift up procedure. If the external module use a load cell the parameter GEAR SHIFT FORCE fix the force needed on the lever to start the quick shift up procedure GEAR SHIFT TIME This parameter fix the cut off time for the quick shift procedure. Fixing big values the cut off will be long. Fixing small values the cut off will be short. NOTE The external module will check the zero position (or zero pressure ) of sensor every time the bike is switched on. The GEAR SHIFT FORCE fix the variation of tension (on the sensor) needed to start a quick shift procedure. This mean that when the user switch on the bike he must be careful on the gear box lever. The rider must avoid any touch during the start of the bike. To have a good regolation of external midule please use the WIZARD - GEAR SHIFT WIZARD - GEAR SHIFT Pushing the button WIZARD GEAR SHIFT a new window will appear.
Fig.10 Please follow this steps: 1. Switch on the ECU (without touching the gear box lever) 2. Connect the USB cable to the ECU 3. Press the button connect to the ECU. The software will start a procedure to get some data from the ECU. This data will be used to fix the parameters of external module. 4. Start to push on the gear box lever. The force on the lever must be similar to he one used for the shift up but not enough to change the gear. 5. Keeping this force on the lever push the button read the voltage from sensor 6. Release the lever 7. Now the software has the data t fix the parameters of external module. 8. Push the button set the parameters for gear module to progrm the ECU. ATTENTION: After the wizard procedure the ECU has the information to use correctly the external module. To change the force on the lever (requested to change the gear) or the cut off time please use the parameters GEAR SHIFT FORCE and GEAR SHIFT TIME. After you change this parameters use the button PROGRAM ECU) on main screen to fix the parameters on the ECU. 3.2 ADVANCED This group include some parameters used to set the tractio controls and external gear box module. Before change any parameters it is important read the value from ECU pushing the button READ ECU. Please the following paragraph to understand how manage this parameters DIPENDENCE FROM SPEED This parameter fix the sensitive and the character of control by corner speed. The high speed corner need a control of stability. The slow speed coner needs a very quick reaction. For that reason the GRIPONE PRO 2 change a bit the character of control and the sensitive of system by the speed of bike. With low value of this parameter correspond to low trend to this kind of feature: the sensitive of traction control system and the character of control still same in every condition. With high value of this parameter correspond to plucked trend to this kind of feature: the sensitive of traction control system and the character of control change a lot by the condition REMOTE CONTROL In this sub-group the user can fix which kind of remote control is using. If the user is using the standard remote control (lever type) it is necessary fix Standard remote control flagged on. If the user is not using any remote control it is necessary fix Standard remote control flagged on. If the user is using the analog remote control (lever type) it is necessary fix Analog remote control flagged on GEAR SHIFT SENSOR In this sub-group the user must specify the correct way of work of gear box sensor. If the sensor is a load cell the user must specify how the cell is solicit when the rider shift up the gear: compression or extension. If the sensor is a linear potentiometer : - Select COMPRESSION if the sensori s compressend when rider shift up the gear - Select EXTENSION if the sensori s tensioned when rider shift up the gear If this parameter is not right fixed the external module for gear box does not work correctly.
3.3 MONITORING Into the ADVANCED window there are 3 monitoring group: GAS MONITORING, GEAR SENSOR MONITORING e REMOTE CONTROL MONITORING. Every group get the signal from analog input of ECU (TPS, gear box sensor and remote control device) and give to the user a graphical information about the state of signal. The user can activate only one of monitoring at the same time. Before switch on a monitoring the user must connect the USB cable to the ECU and switch on the ECU GAS MONITORING Pushing the button ON the ECU start to read the signal and give the voltage on the screen (voltage is calcolated in millivolts). The ECU has a input safe filter. For that reasonn the voltage read could be lower than real voltage on TPS GEAR SENSOR MONITORING Pushing the button ON the ECU start to read the signal and give the voltage on the screen (voltage is calcolated in millivolts). The ECU has a input safe filter. For that reasonn the voltage read could be lower than real voltage on TPS REMOTE CONTROL MONITORING Pushing the button ON the ECU start to read the signal and give the voltage on the screen (voltage is calcolated in millivolts). The ECU has a input safe filter. For that reasonn the voltage read could be lower than real voltage on TPS. If the standard remote control is connected to the ECU the software will give a extra information regarding the position of remote control switch. If the analog remote control is connected to the ECU the software will give a extra information regarding the position of remote control potentiometer. This information give the shifting of THRESHOLD. The real value of THRESHLD will be the value of 1 THRESHOLD, 2 THRESHOLD and 3 THRESHOLD, added to the value showed of analog remote control. 4.0 ECU CONFIGURATION 4.1 TO START This paragraph would like to explain the procedure to prepare the ECU for the first test. After the installation of the software and read the meaning of every parameters, please follow this procedure to prepare the ECU: 1. Switch on the ECU and connect the USB cable 2. Set the initialize of throttle position sensor. Please see the paragraph Fix the value of parameters included into the group HARDWARE. Please see the paragraph Fix the value of parameters included into the group TRACTION CONTROL. Please see the paragraph Press button PROGRAM ECU 6. Wait the end of procedure 7. Disconnect the USB cable 8. Switch off the ECU 4.2 AFFINARE la CONFIGURAZIONE After the first test it is very important find a good setting to improve the performance of the system. Parameters who must take care for the tuning of system are the one included in to the group TRACTION CONTROL and the DIPENDENCE FROM SPEED (included into the ADVANCED window). How to proceede to adjust the ECU 1. Please start with 1 CONTROL, 2 CONTROL and 3 CONTROL quite high (6 to 10). This value give a good feedback to the rider who are able to understand when the system start to work. 2. Start with 1 THRESHOLD, 2 THRESHOLD and 3 THRESHOLD quite low (2 to 5). This choice give the opportunity to switch on the system very easly. 3. Move up the 1 THRESHOLD, 2 THRESHOLD and 3 THRESHOLD to obtain a correct timing of traction control. Changing this parameters the user can fix the moment (inside the corner) when the system start to work. 4. After that, if the control is too invasive please change the value of 1 CONTROL, 2 CONTROL and 3 CONTROL to obtain a good level of control on the engine power. ATTENTION Please keep in mind that the traction control system does not preclude crash caused by a wrong use of the throttle of the veichle in general. For this reason we suggest to test the work of the system and its effect on
the bike carefully. Please try the different regulation by small step and do not exaggerate with the use of throttle.
