3 gizzmo CAM FUEL CONTROLLER The FC has an (air/fuel controller) onboard so that the fundamental fuelling issues related to the addition of tuning accessories such as extractors, exhausts, adjustable cam gears, filters and mild cams can be resolved. The switching point is adjustable in 1 RPM increments and the switch off point is adjustable as well. The is adjustable in 500rpm increments and automatically interpolates (averages) between these points. For non-adjustable cam vehicles, the FC can be used for its and tachometer features whilst the cam trigger output can be used as an RPM switch for NOS, shiftlight, high boost solenoid etc. Technical Diagram Dot Matrix LED display DotMatrix LED s display your real-time Tachometer in all lighting conditions whilst having a high resistance to heat and vibration. Processing Power Gizzmo s FC is over engineered with a 40mhz RISC Processor capable of processing 10,000,000 instructions a second. Extruded Aluminium Case By utilising a rugged Extruded Aluminium case you can be assured that your FC will keep its look for years to come. Because the FC is so deceptively small, you can mount it virtually anywhere. 1

6 Quick Start Obtain ECU wiring schematic. We have supplied what we have available at the back of this booklet and our latest listings are available at If your vehicle is not covered, your technician should be able to source the information pertaining to your vehicle. Disconnect the negative battery terminal Wire the FC s positive wire to the Engine ECU s ignition positive wire Wire the FC s negative wire to the Engine ECU s earth wire Wire the FC s RPM wire to the ECU s Tachometer output, igniter output or digital crank/cam angle sensor. If utilising the feature, cut the wire for the main load sensor (flow meter/map sensor etc) and wire in the FC s IN wire to the cut wire on the flow meter side. After this wire the OUT to the other cut wire on the ECU side. If using the FC s cam functions, cut the cam actuator wire from the ECU and wire the FC s CAM OUT wire to the actuator side (engine side), NOT the ECU side. If fitting the FC to a Vtec, wire the FC s CAM IN wire to the cut wire on the ECU s side. If fitting the FC to a Vtec that has a VTM wire (most Type R s and some SOHC Vtec s do not have these), cut the ECU s VTM wire and connect the FC s VTM OUT wire to the ECU side of the cut wire. Check over all the wiring and if everything is OK reconnect the battery terminal. Turn the ignition on and configure the SOL (Solenoid) and the SENS (Sensor) function on the FC. Start the vehicle and configure the INPT (Input) function on the FC to calibrate the tachometer on the FC to the vehicles tachometer. 4

The Option Range is from A ~ H. RPM Option Both Button1 and Button2 to save the new setting and return back to Running Mode H The INPUT mode is where you align the Engine RPM to the FC s RPM (you may consider it a cylinder selection mode), a tachometer may offer some assistance in this mode. There are 8 preset options labeled from A to H and in order to set the input mode, the vehicle must be running. Upon entering this mode the display will oscillate between the option that is presently set (A to H) and the RPM that will be displayed for that option. Having entered the input mode, the up and down buttons rotate through the options. Once you have navigated to the option that displays an RPM that most accurately lines up with the engine/tachometer you can exit the input mode and the option will be automatically saved to memory. 8

11 Sensor up Running Mode Both Button1 And INPUT Mode INPT Rise/Fall Definition 95% of cars have what we define as rising type load sensors. A rising type load sensor has an output voltage that rises with load. This means that when the vehicle is under high loads the voltage output from the sensor will be higher than when it is under slight loads. A fall sensor is the inverse of this e.g. slight loads output a higher voltage than high loads. Defining if your vehicle has a rise or fall type sensor is the job of an experienced technician but this feature will in no way impact the operation of your vehicle and is only present to align the polarity of the settings. gizzmo SENSOR Mode SENS Both Button1 And VOLT: Analog Type Flow/Pressure Sensor FREQ: Frequency Type Flow meter VOLT either Button1 or Both Button1 And either Button1 or FREQ Both Button1 And either Button1 or FALL Both Button1 And RISE Both Button1 And either Button1 or 9

15 Tech Notes INPUT menu: Different engines have different frequencies on the tachometer & cam/crank angle signal wires and therefore we must calibrate the FC to suit their frequency. Do be aware that the FC may not line up perfectly with an analogue tachometer due to the inaccuracy of analogue Tachometers but it should be clear which selection is correct as they should be within +/- 300rpm. + ON / ON: Mivec s require a negative signal to switch on, whilst Vtecs require a positive signal. The FC can therefore adapt to both these requirements. In the applications above, the +NO selection on the FC would output a positive signal to the VTEC or positive triggered accessory whilst the NO would output a negative signal to a MIVEC or negative triggered accessory. Frequency Type Flow / Pressure Sensor: Some load sensors output a frequency relative to flow whilst others output a voltage relative to flow / vacuum / pressure. Due to the variety of vehicles we recommend doing some research prior to installation as to whether you have a frequency or voltage type sensor. We have neither heard of or experienced any damage due to an incorrect selection and believe it to be near impossible to happen. 13

16 Wiring Diagram Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery BEFORE proceeding with the installation. ECU wiring information is supplied in the following pages. The wiring information is a guideline only. On various makes and models ECU pin outs may differ from those illustrated. A professional should carry out installation, and the ECU pin out information should be checked. 17 Wiring Diagram II RED, 12V Power Supply: This must be soldered to a clean 12V ignition power source, preferably the ECU power source. BLACK, : Solder this to the ECU s earth supply. GREEN, RPM in: Solder this wire to a low voltage digital engine frequency signal wire e.g. Igniter trigger signal, digital crank/cam angle sensor, ECU tach out signal. DO NOT join this wire to the coil negative wire or a Tachometer wire that does not come from the ECU. BROWN, VTM: On VTEC s this wire must be connected to the oil pressure switch wire that returns to the ECU. In VTEC applications, be aware that not all VTEC s have a VTM wire, ESP Type R s an SOHC VTECs. WHITE, Signal in: After cutting the load signal wire to the ECU, solder this wire to the Sensor side. YELLOW, Signal out: Solder this wire to the ECU side of the cut Sensor wire. PURPLE, VTEC in(ecu side): On VTECs this must be soldered to the ECU Side of the cut cam solenoid wire. BLUE, AUX out / Vtec out: this wire is to be connected to the accessory that you wish to run. This has a maximum output current of 1.5 amps, beyond this, a relay must be used. For VTEC/MIVEC usage, the cam solenoid wire from the ECU must be cut before soldering the FC s Aux out wire to the solenoid side of the cut wire. 15

25 Trouble Shooting I Symptom: My car starts but does not run properly Check that the is set at zero throughout the rev range Check that you have the SENS mode set correctly for your vehicle If in doubt, disconnect the in and out wires and connect the two vehicle side wires back together as factory to see if it operates correctly. If this is successful there is either an incorrect setting in the FC, or it is defective. Symptom: My checklight stays on since fitting the FC Some vehicles can be sensitive to the amount of adjustment that the has, try setting it at 0% right through the rev range and see if this corrects it. If a vtec, check that you have connected the VTM wire where appropriate. If a Vtec, check that the VTEC IN wire is connected. Symptom: When I increase my setting my car detonates/leans out Check that the RISE/FALL setting selected after setting VOLT within the sensor setup menu is correctly set for your vehicle Symptom: The FC does not power up Recheck the power and earth connections by probing the FC wires with a tungsten, not LED, test light. Is your vehicle 12 volt and not 24 volt? If your vehicle is 24V the FC may have been damaged. 22

26 Trouble Shooting II Symptom: There is no tachometer reading when the engine is running Check that the RPM wire on the FC is connected to a low voltage DIGITAL rpm source e.g. ECU tachometer output, igniter trigger, digital crank angle sensor output and NOT a coil negative, analogue crank angle sensor (reluctor, inductive type) or tachometer signal from a coil negative source. Symptom: The cam actuator/aux is not switching on Check if the SOL mode is set correctly. +ON is for a solenoid or lamp etc that has a permanent negative and requires a positive supply from the FC in order to operate. The -ON is the inverse of this. If a VTEC vehicle, is the VTEC IN & VTEC OUT around the correct way? Symptom: The tachometer on my FC does not line up with my vehicles tachometer Check that the INPT mode on the FC is set correctly. Factory tachometers can be up to 600rpm out at higher revs but should be within 300rpm at lower revs so it may never quite line up with the FC. The FC is accu rate to within 1rpm at any revs. Check that the RPM wire on the FC is connected to a low voltage digital rpm source e.g. ECU tachometer output, igniter trigger, digital crank angle sensor output and NOT a coil negative or tachometer signal from a coil negative source. 24

27 Trouble Shooting III Symptom: Vehicle looses power just before/after switching on vtec. Chances are the cam is switching at the wrong RPM. A lot of people believe that switching the cam on earlier will result in getting their power earlier; this is not always the case as sometimes the cam point should be set later. There is an ideal switching point and the only way to truly find this is quite often to set this cam point on a dynamometer. Symptom: Vehicle has lost power everywhere. Check to see that the setting (percentage offsets) are zeroed out and that the sensor type is set correctly. Check the location of the FC s earth wire. Due to these instructions being specific to the FC we do not cover Auto Electrical principals in depth, and as stated earlier, recommend this product be fitted by a qualified Auto Electrician. Should your technician be experiencing any difficulties we will endeavor to help to the best of our abilities. Because we believe that this should be fitted by a qualified technician due to its complexity, we will be inclined to only assist technicians and therefore will not offer telephone, literature or support to non-trade sources. Please remember, this is a highly technical and complex device and a little mistake can damage a very costly ECU or FC. 25

28 F A Q Why is the Off ting automatically defaulted to 100RPM below the On setting? If you had your point set to switch on just above 4500rpm and off at 4500rpm and you were driving along at 4500rpm, the valve would be erratically flicking on and off and your engine would not know if it was coming or going as the cams would be switching erratically. Why do we need to change setting, when we change our cam switching point? When changing a cam switching point, the original ECU is unaware that this point has changed. Because of this it does not alter the tune and therefore, if you have raised the high cam point from 4500rpm to 5000rpm; at 4800rpm it will still have the high cam fuel tune. Because of this, you most likely will have to alter the point at 4500rpm to offset the tune to fall more in line with low cam tune. What does A/F offset percentage represent? A/F offset on an represents the percentage offset to the input voltage. So, for example, if the voltage from the flow meter / map sensor was 2.0 volts and the was set to +10%, the output voltage would be 2.2 volts. How come when I run larger injectors and high negative numbers in my my engine detonates? When you lean the mixture with an you are telling to original ECU that it has less load so put in less fuel. As a consequence of this, the ECU puts in more timing. If running larger injectors, we recommend running injectors that are not much larger then factory. 25
