Exhaust Notes #ForTheGlory Nebraska Region SCCA July 2018 Steering Column Steve Ducharme Regional Executive The busy summer is in full swing, with Spring Nationals two Solo points events and a RallyCross points event in the last five weeks. We have the popular Nebraskhana coming up on Saturday, July 7, followed by a solo points event on the 8th. Just in case you haven t had enough fun yet, we added a solo test and tune on June 30 and an extra non-points solo July 29th to help us warm up for the MiDiv Solo Championships on August 4 and 5. You will find information for all these events and more at nrscca.com. Nebraska region members are active in a wide variety of motorsports-related events in the region and across the country, ranging from Cars and Coffee to crewing for Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Members also help out with events that help grow the sport. One of these is the Formula SAE competition that has been held at our autocross site in Lincoln Air Park for a week each June since 2012. Over one hundred college and university teams compete in cars that they designed and built from scratch over the previous academic year. Teams come from across the US, as well as from Europe, Central and South America, and Asia. The teams of 15 to 20 members compete in eight categories Cost, Presentation, Design, Acceleration, Skid Pad, Autocross, Endurance, and Efficiency. Rallycross: Mike LoveJoy Mother Nature has been a roll this month for which wreaking havoc on outdoor events and RallyCross was no exception this month. We battled muggy Nebraska Region Exhaust Notes - July 2018 3

but hot conditions all morning and through the afternoon with our RallyCross Points #4 Event. Kris Martison designed a tricky course with 4 crossover points leading to long 70-80 second runs for our competitors. However, about 2:30, dark clouds rolled in, blew my pop-up tent over, and subsequently dropped a monsoon of rain that turned our once-dry RallyCross coarse into 2 inches of mud. With lightning overhead and the course undrivable we called off the rest of the runs and scrambled to retrieve what we could. To avoid ruining the site with ruts, we opted to leave the cones on the coarse until drier conditions returned. I can confirm the site is still in good shape, though I noticed some rutting happening where we once laid dirt down. So I spoke to the site owner about that. If we get a dry spell he will drop some more dirt there to fill in and smooth it over. We have another RallyCross Points Event in July, but I will be out of town for this. I have arranged for Alex Reinkordt to be the Eventmaster and Course Designer, so I m confident you ll have a great event while I m away. I m still looking for someone to bring food for the event, so if you have any bright ideas. Solo Chair: Vacant John Hunter recommends we hold a TNT two weeks before Nationals to draw out-region members Club Racing: Kevin Kopecky Erich Pfalzgraf, RE from DMVR and Kevin are working on sips for the Sept 22/23 race. Lincoln Air Park : Mar Walker ( not present) Keisel TNT the Thurs before Nationals. Points : Deb Erpelding Will be updating webpage on points only 7 points events left this year. The Feb, March and April points events were cancelled. Focus Session Hosting a non-region event at LAP we need a policy We have good results working with various clubs. Corvette Club, Mustang Club, Keisel and friends, Ron Vermulm and Hoosier/ Bridgestone A group in Texas Region has asked to rent the LAP site for a Test and Tune preferably July 28 on July 28/29 Texas will be there Sat and a Solo No-points event on Sun July 29 9 Old Business We may have a organizer for Street Survival GrassRoots Motorsport decided to forgo the Skidpad Challenge this year at Soli Nationals. 9 New Business Chris Harrison had some ideas for time on radio advertisising 93.7 FM Lincoln sports radio morning show for July 29 event. RallyCross Mike Lovejoy RallyCross Chair Mother Nature left the water on for much of the month of June, wreaking havoc on local outdoor events. Rallycross was no exception. On June 17th, the NRSCCA hosted it s 4th Rallycross Points event at I-80 Speedway. It had been dry in the days leading up to the event, so we battled muggy hot conditions all morning and through the afternoon. 16 Competitors braved the heat and battled it out on a dusty course designed by Kris Martison. With 4 points where the course overlapped itself, it meant that we could only run one car at a time on course, but it also meant for one of the longest courses we ve had in a long time. Most runs were between 70 and 80 seconds long and the design offered unique challenges for competitors. However, at about 2:30, Dark Clouds rolled in and a strong gust of wind tackled our operation. Soon after, there was a torrential downpour of rain that turned our once-dry rallycross course into 2 inches of mud in a matter of minutes. With lightning overhead and the course suddenly undriveable, we called off the rest of the runs and scrambled to retrieve what we could. Once the downpour had let up, the next problem we faced was trying to pack things up. Most of the equipment was retrieved from the site, but because the course was now a mud pit (which would ve been fun to drive through sliding about) we would ve rutted up most of the site for the next event had we picked up all of the cones. To avoid that, we opted to leave the cones on the course until they could be picked up when drier weather returned to the area. Changes for Points System For the 2018 NRSCCA season, the board approved three minor changes to the points system. First, participation at events outside Nebraska Region will no longer count toward activity points. Deb Erpelding Second, members wanting to Points Keeper earn activity points as workers at an activity points event that they are not competing in must sign up for a work assignment at registration. Third, there is a change in the rule for determining driver of the year awards for the Gymkhana (Solo) and RallyCross Points Series. The points keeper will automatically drop the lowest scores from either 2 or 25% of each series events, whichever is smaller. This means that two scores will be dropped if there are eight or more points events in the series, and only one will be dropped if there are fewer than eight. One final note, since the February RallyCross event was rescheduled for March 4th and the March Rallycross event was cancelled, there is no activities points event for either month. That leaves eight activities points events scheduled for 2018, one per month from April to November. Congratulations Trevor! Trevor Janke s Famous Racing Enterprises Camaro did well at the World of Wheels, with a First in Class and Outstanding Competition Car. Special thanks to Speedway Motors and Garage Graphics. We left the site in good condition and, with more rain in the weeks to follow, the few tracks we did leave were smoothed over. The main portions of the site that we use for the rallycross course are in good shape, but if things dry up a little more, we could extend the course even further. Alex Reinkordt has been tasked with course design for the July 15th Event, so look forward to a challenging rallycross coming up soon! Nebraska Region Exhaust Notes - July 2018 11
