Unit 4: Generating New Options Section 1: How to Generate New Options Section Outline Generating New Options Unit 4 - Section 1 - Slide No. 2
Section 1: How to Generate New Options Section Objectives List three things to consider when assessing the pollution prevention potential of a process List at least four questions you can ask to conduct a simple technical evaluation List three people you will want to involve when you generate a new option Unit 4 - Section 1 - Slide No. 3
Generating New Options First Step: Look at the inputs, processes, and outputs Inputs: Which inputs contain hazardous materials? Processes: How is the material used? Can the process be modified to prevent pollution? Outputs: Can you identify your hazardous waste streams? Unit 4 - Section 1 - Slide No. 4
A process flow diagram can help you answer questions See Attachment 4-1 for some excellent examples AETC FUELS Fluids Purging/Replacement Parts Replacement Parts Repair Cleaning/Surface Prep Fuels Testing INPUTS JP-8 * Oil Diesel * MOGAS * Freon * Copper Tubing Hydraulic Fluid Ether * Transmission Fluid Antifreeze * Hydrazine * PROCESS OUTPUTS Recycle/ Recover Purged JP-8 Purged Oil Purged Diesel Purged MOGAS Purged & Recovered Freon Waste Copper Tubing Purged Hydraulic Fluid Purged Antifreeze Freon * Oil Filters Lubricants * Sealants * Batteries Tires Rags Purged & Recovered Freon Drained & Crushed Oil Filters Spent Batteries Used Tires Used Rags Lubricants * Sealants * Freon * Cutting Fluid * Rags Purged & Recovered Freon Used Rags Alcohol * Ether * Paint * Rags Battery Cleaner * Solvents * /Cleaners * Used Rags HW Purged Hydrazine Waste Tank Sludge MSW Empty Containers Empty Aerosols Empty Containers Empty Containers Empty Aerosols Empty Containers Empty Aerosols Water * Air Emission Source Used in Process Disposal methods vary. Next step: look at the tasks that make up the process: What do you do? How do you do it? Why do you do it? Can you change something that would eliminate a waste? Unit 4 - Section 1 - Slide No. 6
Resources Unit 3 of this manual Your facility engineers in Civil Engineering (CE) Equipment vendors and technical magazines State and local agencies may have programs that provide assistance Check with Environmental Flight before contacting other agencies Unit 4 - Section 1 - Slide No. 7
Once you ve come up with new options, evaluate the following requirements: Technical Occupational Health TOs Funding Unit 4 - Section 1 - Slide No. 8
The Technical Evaluation Helps you determine whether the option will perform as expected If your option involves modification, it may help to talk to personnel at other bases who are doing the same things Some vendors will install equipment so you can try it to see if it meets your needs Unit 4 - Section 1 - Slide No. 9
Evaluation Questions 1. Is the system safe for workers? 2. Is space available to implement the option? 3. Will process quality be maintained? 4. Are existing utilities adequate? 5. Does the vendor provide acceptable service? 6. Is special expertise required to operate or maintain the new system? Unit 4 - Section 1 - Slide No. 10
The Occupational Health Evaluation BE will: Help you evaluate the hazards associated with your input materials Determine the protective measures required to work safely with the material Perform equipment evaluations and determine the necessary protective measures required TO changes and funding requirements are discussed in the following sections Unit 4 - Section 1 - Slide No. 11
Make sure that Environmental Flight, BE, HMP, and your Environmental Coordinator (EC) get involved in all aspects of generating and evaluating new options They know your shop and can provide valuable assistance Unit 4 - Section 1 - Slide No. 12
