Planning your Installation To ensure quick and easy installation of XRack and your equipment, it is recommended that you plan the allocation of space in the XRack and the location of the XRack itself. Some points to consider: 1. Ideally, equipment should be installed with 1U of space between equipment for maximum cooling efficiency. 2. RAID systems should generally be installed below servers. 3. Install power distribution units in the lowest rack position at the rear of the unit. 4. Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) should generally be installed in the bottom most rack positions. Space should be left between a UPS and other equipment when possible. 5.There is a 1 minimum clear space on all sides of the XRackPro unit to allow for proper air flow into the air intake vents. The main air intake is located on the bottom near the front of the XRack; there must be a clear area between the bottom of the XRack and the ground. 6. For optimal acoustic noise reduction, do not place XRack close to walls. Walls will reflect and amplify the small amount of sound produced by the XRack fans. 7. Xrack s adjustable vertical mounting rails are pre-located for maximum depth. The default settings keep the front of the rackmount equipment fairly close to the glass door for easy viewing of the status lights and to allow for space in the rear for cabling. If you are installing equipment with a larger front profile, such as video decks with front connections, you may want to consider repositioning the vertical mounting rails rearward prior to installing equipment. 8. It is recommended that empty rack units that remain after installation is complete be filled with optional blank filler panels (available at XRackPro.com). This provides better airflow into the front air intakes of the equipment. 9. If you plan to place equipment on top of XRack, it is recommended that you purchase an optional Equipment Isolation Mat (available at XRackPro.com). This specially designed mat protects the finish of XRack and isolates potentially damaging vibrations from occurring between the XRack and your equipment. 10. Installation of equipment into XRack is much easier with the aid of an assistant. Installation Before installing any units into the XRackPro, please visually inspect your XRackPro. Step 1: Opening the XRackPro Open the front and rear doors by pressing in on the bottom of the latch over the keyhole. Pull to open. Remove the side panels by sliding the side panel latches toward the center of the side panel, tipping the top out toward you, then lift the doors off the locating pins at the bottom. If the door does not open, the locking tabs, located on the inside vertical edges of the side panels, may be locked. To unlock them, reach inside the XRack and rotate the security latches inward. (panels are initially locked from the factory) Remove the hardware kit from the inside of the XRack. 4

Installation (continued) Step 2: Adjusting the Vertical Mounting Rails NOTE: Take the time to ascertain that the positioning of the vertical mounting rails allows for sufficient clearance for these devices. Some devices that require cable connections in the front may require the vertical mounting rails to be positioned further rearward. The rails are pre-positioned for deeper rackmount equipment (such as 1U servers). If necessary, loosen the two retaining bolts securing each of the vertical rails, slide the rails into the proper position and retighten the retaining bolts. If you move the rails, ensure that they are repositioned parallel to each other (i.e., the same distance from the front or rear of the XRack). Step 3: Preparing Mounting Positions NOTE: XRack ships with 24 cage nuts and screws, used to mount equipment to the vertical mounting rails. Determine the total number of cage nuts and screws needed for installation of all equipment and optional filler panels. You may need to purchase additional cage nuts and screws (available at www.xrackpro.com). Determine the location of all equipment to be installed, including the Power Distribution Unit (PDU) and any optional filler panels. Note how many screws are required for each unit. Use the vertical rail markings to allocate space. Each unit installed should occupy one or more vertical mounting spaces as marked. Press the cage nuts in place into each location that a screw will be used to secure equipment. The cage nuts install by firmly pressing them into place from the inside out on the vertical mounting rails. All four rails are numbered to ensure that you achieve proper alignment of mounting positions. Step 4: Installing Equipment Install equipment into the XRack. The XRack conforms to EIA/NEMA standards for 19 wide rack mounting equipment. Follow manufacturer instructions for each piece of equipment for rack mounting in a four-post 19 rack. DO NOT CONNECT ANY CABLES YET. Step 5: Installing the Power Distribution Unit (if purchased separately) NOTE: The optional Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is not a surge protection device or a line filter. It is a passive power strip. It is highly recommended that all computer equipment be connected to a high-quality line-conditioning surge-suppression device or Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). The PDU has several power outlets; one will be used for XRack s cooling fans. You may need to purchase an additional PDU if the remaining number of outlets are not sufficient for your installation. Install the Power Distribution Unit. Secure with 4 screws. 5

Installation (continued) Step 6: Routing Cables NOTE: XRack includes 6 large knockouts at the rear of the unit 2 1/2 inch diameter (3 on top, 3 on the bottom). These knockouts allow you to run power and data cables out of the XRack. You should only open as many as are required to accommodate your specific cabling needs. Two plastic grommets are included for these openings. Additional grommets are available from XRackPro.com, if needed. Additionally, XRack includes 2 foam rings that are used to seal the knockout opening around exiting wires to help maintain the sound dampening qualities of the XRack. These rings come in 2 sizes. The center holes vary in size to accommodate various sized bundles of cabling. XRack also includes 2 plastic grommets that protect exiting wires from contact with the metal edge of the knockouts. The foam rings and plastic grommets are used together. Determine which knockouts would be best to run cables out of the XRack. Use the bottom knockouts if possible. Remove the pre-cut circle of foam lining above or below the chosen knockout(s). Remove desired knockout(s) by pressing firmly on one side of the knockout; a hammer can be used with a small block of wood to tap out stubborn knockouts. Twist back and forth until the metal nibs holding them in place separate. Press the plastic grommets into the knockout holes from the outside. Run required cables through the holes, including the power cord for the PDU if installed. Make all necessary cable connections to your server equipment. Wrap the foam ring around the bundle of cables exiting the XRack on the outside and press the foam ring into the plastic grommet. Be certain it is fully seated. Connect the XRack cooling fan power cord (located on the rear door) to the UPS or PDU (if installed), or run it through an opening to the outside. It is required that the XRack unit be plugged into an Un-interruptible Power Supply, if used. Step 7: Closing and Securing the XRack NOTE: There are several ways of securing the XRack. The front and rear doors have key locking latches and the side panels have swivel security latches, which are locked once the side panels are installed and prior to closing the front and rear doors. Finally, XRack uses hidden hinges to help prevent unauthorized access. Reattach the side panels by placing them, bottom first, onto the fixed pins on the bottom side ledge of the XRackPro and tipping the top closed. The side latches should spring shut check to be sure they are pressed fully outward. Reach inside the XRack and rotate the security latches outward to lock the side panels. To close the front and rear door, press the latch closed and lock the door latches with the keys provided. 6

Air Filtration System The 12U Studio XRackPro2 is equipped with an air filtration system. The removable filters should be inspected every few weeks and replaced about every 2 to 4 months; environments with more demanding air filtration needs may require a filter change more often. Please contact GizMac (www.xrackpro.com) or your official GizMac reseller to purchase replacement filters. Other Features Removable Rear Door The rear door has a quick release hinge. To release, simply pull down on the top spring loaded hinge and lift the door up and out. Please be sure to unplug the fan harness before removing the door. The rear door also includes a locking latch that is keyed alike to the front door mechanism. Filter Placement and Installation Instructions Place the small filter inside and push toward the front of the rack. Center the filter between the sound foam and push down to secure the velcro. Slide larger filter into rails under the bottom of XRackPro. 7

Warranty The GizMac XRack has a one-year limited warranty on electrical components and a lifetime warranty on the enclosure for defects in materials and workmanship.
