Annual Meeting Set KANSAS TRACTOR CLUB Annual Scholarship Awarded Issue No. 20 Winter 2018 The Kansas Tractor Club annual meeting will be the first Saturday in February. And once again this year we will be meeting at the Central Kansas Flywheels Heritage building. The doors will open at 11 with meal being served by Nellie Quade at Noon and the meeting following the meal. We hope to introduce our most recent scholarship winner, Toben Johnson and get an update From Bryant Patry on his John Deere Restoration. We will be previewing upcoming tractor shows for 2018 and discussing the 2018 Tractor drive. Dinner will be $10 per person. We will have a table set up to take your payment for the meal and your annual dues. Get the word out to your Family and friends to join all of us Saturday, February 3rd. We will add extra tables if needed. Bring your ideas you would like to share with the group. We hope to see a big crowd this year. The Kansas Tractor Club awarded Toben Johnson from Assaria $1000 scholarship towards his tuition at Salina Area Technical College. Toben, who attended Southeast of Saline High School, is pursuing a degree in diesel technology and will use his degree to become a certified technician for Prairieland John Deere dealership, where he is currently employed. The scholarship committee reviews all applications and submits their choices to the Board of Directors of the Kansas Tractor Club for final approval. Scholarship Winner cont. enthusiasts who wanted to share their love of collecting, restoring and displaying their tractors. The club has grown to over 80 members from all over North Central Kansas. The clubs goal is to encourage the next generation to get involved preserving the past. This is the second year the Kansas Tractor Club has awarded the scholarship. In addition to the scholarship money, the Kansas tractor Club also awards money to help with restoration projects. In addition to members dues, money is raised from events including the annual tractor drive held every 2nd Saturday in May. At the February annual meeting Toben will be issued a year s membership to the Kansas Tractor Club. In attendance for the presentation at the Salina Area Technical College was Jim Patry, scholarship committee, Jim Becker, Kansas Tractor Club Board of Director, Mark Shaw, scholarship committee and Dan Helm, vice Orscheln Shows being set One big change for 2018 will be the Salina Show. It will be moved up to April 28th. Normally this show was on fathers day weekend in June. The reason for the change is because of the summer heat. If you have not yet attended one of these great shows. This should be a must do this year. Orschlen goes the extra mile to make everyone who brings a tractor is properly acknowledged. Grand prize winner has received a one hundred dollar gift card to the store. And various door prizes are awarded to just about everyone who attends. Some stores will supply cold or hot drinks and snacks. The Junction City store, last year brought in Pizza for everyone. Patrons are asked to pick their favorite tractor during the show and that choice determines the days winner. Members and guest are encourage to attend. And as an added bonus, Salina Orschlen and Ellsworth Orschlen offer a 10% discount to all active club members throughout the year. One trip to Orscheln could pay back your annual membership. We are still finalizing the dates on the rest of the Orschlen locations. Be sure to check out the Kansas Tractor Club calendar for those dates. president, not pictured. Toben applied for the scholarship on the kansastractorclub.com web site. If you are pursuing a degree in an ag related field you are invited to submit your application before July 15th 2018. Salina Tech Show The first big show of the year is the Salina Area Technical College Vehicle Extravaganza. We are still waiting to hear back from the college to confirm the date and tractor location. Last years show was canceled due to rain. There were a few cars in front of the school, but that was the extent of the show. Please keep checking back to the Kansas Tractor Club web page for more information. And we should have an update on this show at this years annual meeting P A G E 2 Need your Ideas The club is looking for a great idea to put our funds to good use. We have been awarding some of our funds to Scholarships. But we have about $7500 to spend. We would like to donate some of these funds to local charity where it would do the most good related to farm community or ag related. Bring your ideas to the February meeting and share them with the group. 2018 Calendar Events We will be putting together the 2018 calendar web page soon. Please get your events email to me dhelm537@gmail.com or Amy Helm, Kasnsastractorclub@gmail.com. Please include the date of the show, the hours and a brief description. If you have a web site, include the link in the email. If you have a brochure or a flier, please include that as well. If you have any questions, please let us know. All shows must include tractors or a parade that includes tractors.

Painting Tips for Your Tractor P A G E 3 Keeping your tractor or equipment well kept & free from rust & corrosion will extend the life of your investment & help retain its value for a longer period of time. It can be difficult, in many cases, to determine the best products and preparation to best fit your needs. The following tips will hopefully aid you in selecting the system to best fit your individual needs. What to consider when planning your paint job TIME COST EXPECTATIONS SAFETY SUPPLIES & EQUIPMENT NEEDS The more time spent on your project the better the results. Not every situation is the same and the painting system you choose can vary greatly depending on how much you are willing and able to invest in your project. If your tractor or equipment is very rusty it will naturally take much more time to prepare, fill, prime and finish than for a surface with minimal rust & wear. COST The cost of paint most often is the least costly part of the paint job in comparison to preparing and applying the paint. The cost of your basic coatings the average person can work with vs. the high-end automotive finishes best applied by a professional painter, can range widely in price. Later in the presentation we will discuss this in more detail. USE of your tractor and equipment Determine the use of your tractor or equipment and keep this in mind when choosing your coating system. Many times if you have limited outdoor exposure or wear you can save a fair amount of money on the type of coating you buy. Performance EXPECTATIONS Determine the importance of durability, gloss retention, ease of application and dry time needs when choosing your coating system. There can be trade-offs you will need to consider. SAFETY Your personal safety is a top priority. Generally, the more basic coatings are not only easier to apply but are much safer. Adding hardeners or using more exotic coatings, like Acrylics or 2 component systems, use more hazardous chemicals and the use of an approved chemical respirators is a must. A NIOSHapproved charcoal respirator is highly recommended. Also use extra caution in regard to the environment you are painting in. It is very important to have proper ventilation and eliminate open pilot lights and spark sources. SUPPLIES needed to complete the job Sand Paper (coarse to very fine) or sand blaster Cleaner/ degreaser Paint - primer and finish coats Paint thinner and cleanup solvent as recommended for the coating system you choose Spray gun Compressor Masking tape (best quality you can buy) Masking paper or plastic Pick your coating system As noted previously, each coating system has its advantages and disadvantages. Standard enamels (alkyd or synthetic) are usually cheaper and easier for the do-it yourself person to use. Adding a hardener to these coatings can improve the performance closer to that of the higher priced coatings. The higher-tech Acrylic, Acrylic-lacquers and two component products are much more expensive, harder to apply and require much better preparation to perform properly. In most cases these coatings are best painted with by a professional.

Green Magazine Features one of our own Kansas Tractor Club member, Lindsay Hale has been subscribing to the Green Magazine for a few years and enjoyed looking at the part of the magazine which features its reader and their tractors. Some would be celebrating a birthday, anniversary or just the completion of a project. Lindsay wanted to share one of his prize restorations and had his wife Chris take a picture of him with his, what appears to be a John Deere 820. His hope was that it he would see it in the middle section with the rest of the pictures. In early December he received a call from a friend asking Lindsay if he has seen the latest issue of Green. Lindsay went to the mailbox retrieved the latest copy. His picture made the back cover of the magazine. Congratulations Lindsay. Restoring your old, worn tractor tires I did a little research on fixing the weather worn tractor tires. You can order black tire paint from any online store including amazon or ebay. Tires are one of the big ticket items when restoring a tractor. Inflate your tire before you start. Mix the paint, according to instructions, most of the time it is 1 part paint and 4 parts water. You can spray it on or brush it on. The paint does not only cover and becomes a part of the tire, but brings new life to your worn tires. It is the same paint that is used when retreading tractor trailer tires. The paint will fill the small cracks and give your tires that look like new for a fraction of the cost of replacing your tires. But if you need to replace your tires, be sure to find some great deals at one of our tractor club sponsors. P A G E 4 What is your News Year s Resolution Every new year beginning, many of us think back over the past year and remember some of the task we wanted to accomplish. Some we did, but maybe there were some that didn t get done. Many of these uncompleted task remained undone simply because we didn t remember to do them. This year my first task is to take my Orscheln calendar and pick out the dates I want to start certain projects. This will not only remind me that I need to start this project but putting it on the calendar, I will know that it is coming up. If something prevents me from starting the project, I will just move it ahead on the calendar. This won t guarantee that I will get these task accomplished but it won t be because I forgot them.
