The integrated thermostat accelerates warm-up and prevents overcooling when used with an oil cooler. Under no circumstances can the thermostat fail in such a way that oil flow to the engine or transmission is blocked. Thermostat is re-buildable. Should the unit fail, it can be shipped back to Improved Racing for a rebuild with a new thermal element and seals. For a list of compatible filters, turn to Appendix A, located on Page 7 of this manual. 3
Flow Diagram and Operation 1. The thermostat bypasses the oil cooler until the fluid reaches the rated activation temperature. 2. At the activation temperature, the bypass valve gradually begins to close, forcing oil through the cooler and allowing it to cool. If the oil cooler s heat extraction rate is sufficient, the fluid will tend to stabilize at the rated stabilization temperature at the outlet. COOL OIL 94-98% OF OIL FLOW BYPASSES THE OIL OIL ALWAYS FLOWS THROUGH FILTER FIRST HOT OIL 100% OF OIL FLOW NOW FLOWS THROUGH OIL Figure 1 - Oil Flow Diagram 4
Flow Configurations The standard flow configuration (Figure 2) or alternate flow configuration (Figure 3) may be used. Select the configuration that best suits your setup. Tip: The standard flow configuration is recommended. ENV-170 18 F THERMOSTAT PAT. PENDING MADE IN USA 170217 ENV-170 18 F THERMOSTAT PAT. Installation Instructions 1. Install the AN adapter fittings into the filter mount. Tip: Lubricate the -AN fitting O-rings with engine oil to prevent O-ring damage. Tip: Use aluminum -AN fitting wrenches to avoid damaging the fittings. 2. Secure the filter mount to the vehicle with the mounting bracket provided. 3. Configure and assemble the oiling system lines for the vehicle. 4. Fill the oil cooler with oil prior to connecting the lines.. Connect and tighten the system lines. DO NOT overtighten. Tip: Use aluminum -AN fitting wrenches to avoid damaging the fittings. 6. Secure the oil cooler to the vehicle. 7. Refill the engine oiling system and install a new oil filter. Tip: Pre-fill the oil filter with engine oil and lubricate the oil filter seal with engine oil. 8. Remove the fuel pump fuse(s) or disconnect the ignition circuit. 9. Crank the engine over to build oil pressure. 10. Replace any fuse(s) removed and/or reconnect the ignition circuit. 11. Start the vehicle and inspect for leaks. 12. Turn-off the vehicle and inspect the engine oil level. Add oil if necessary. 13. Re-inspect the oil lines and fittings for leaks after 100 miles of driving. Installation is now complete.
