The AEM Cold Air System is the result of extensive development on a wide variety of cars. Each system is engineered for the particular application. The AEM Cold Air System differs from all others in several ways. We take the inlet air from outside of the engine compartment where the inlet air is considerably cooler than the hot under hood air. The cooler inlet air temperature translates to more power during the combustion process because cool air is denser than warm air. AEM has conducted extensive inlet air temperature studies and we have seen temperature reductions of up to 50 degrees by pulling air from outside of the engine compartment. The air mass flow to the engine is increased because of the increased airflow and reduced inlet temperature, which translates to more power. The AEM Cold Air Systems are 50 states Street Legal (some model and years still pending) and come with complete instructions for ease of installation. Our system is constructed of lightweight aluminum and then painted with a zirconia based powder coat for superior heat insulating characteristics. The aluminum will not crack in extended use like plastic and it is actually lighter than plastic. The tube diameter and length are matched for each engine to give power over a broad rpm range. Unlike the plastic systems that use a continually diverging cross section, we take advantage of the acoustical energy in the duct to promote cylinder filling during the intake valve-opening event. R ead and understand these instructions BEFORE attempting to install this product. 1) Getting started a) Make sure vehicle is parked on a level surface. b) Set parking brake. c) Disconnect both battery terminals. d) If engine has run within the past two hours let it cool down. e) Chock rear wheels, jack up front of vehicle and place on properly rated jack stands. f) Remove front left wheel. 2) Removing the stock air inlet system a) Stock intake system. b) Unplug MAF sensor and loosen hose clamp at air box inlet. c) Release all clips and remove upper air box from vehicle. d) Remove filter from lower air box. 2
e) Unplug green connector on vacuum solenoid. f) Pull vacuum hose off of the nipple on the air box. + g) Pull the air box up and out of the engine bay. Remove the two bolts holding down the air box bracket and remove the bracket from the vehicle. h) Remove the vacuum solenoid from the air box. Remove all vacuum lines from the solenoid. Plug green connector back into solenoid and secure it to a wiring harness utilizing the supplied zip tie. 3
i) Release plastic clips inside the fender. j) Remove the four screws on the bottom of the fender liner. k) Place fender liner as shown. l) Release the three nuts securing the resonator box. Remove the box from the vehicle. 4
3) Installation of the AEM Cold Air Intake System When installing the Cold Air Intake System, DO NOT completely tighten the hose clamps or mounting tab hardware until instructed to do so later in these instructions. a) Release the two hose clamps that hold the vacuum hose to the radiator hose. b) Follow the vacuum hose from the air box up to the plastic vacuum fitting under the throttle body. Carefully pull the vacuum hose off of the fitting. Be careful not to break it. Remove hose form vehicle. c) Install supplied vacuum cap onto the open port on the vacuum fitting. d) Remove the bolt in the fender sheet metal. 5
Rubber Mount Chassis Lock Nut Fender Washer Inlet Pipe Support Tab e) Install the supplied rubber mounts as shown. Refer to step f for proper installation. f) Proper rubber mount installation g) Place pipe in engine bay as shown. h) Secure the pipe with the supplied washers and lock nuts. Do not completely tighten lock nuts. 6
Air Flow Plug side i) Secure the upper end of the pipe utilizing the stock inlet hose and clamp. A small amount of WD-40 on the end of the pipe may ease installation. j) Remove the air flow meter from the stock air box. Secure it to the smaller pipe using the supplied screws as shown. Attach the air filter and reducer to the pipe using a size 44 hose clamp on the reducer. Confirm that the air flow sensor is installed as shown above! k) Attach the air filter apparatus as shown. Route the stock air flow sensor wiring harness through the hole in the fender and plug it into the sensor as shown. Again check the position of the air flow meter and confirm that is positioned as shown above. l) Finished Cold Air Intake System installed. 4) Reassemble the vehicle a) Inspect the engine bay for any loose tools and check that all fasteners that were moved or removed are properly tightened, including the wheel and fender liner. Torque lug nuts to 90 lb-ft. b) Position the pipes so that they do not touch any other surfaces and tighten hose clamps. c) Reconnect battery terminals. d) Start engine and perform a final inspection before driving the vehicle.
