All Spanish companies in the automotive equipment and parts sector agree that the direction of their investment activities is entirely dynamic, depending on the model renewal decisions made by the automobile manufacturers. The parts industry is increasingly important within the automobile production process, as an increasing number of them subcontract and supply more pre-assembled complete systems. In recent years, the sector has been taking on more complex functions, such as coordinating with other suppliers and investment in R&D+i. Competitiveness factors Technology, investment in R&D+i, cost control, on-time deliveries and the quality-price ratio are the key factors to the success of the sector. In recent years, the greatest innovations have sought to develop parts that improve driving, comply with environmental regulations and increase safety. In general terms, the sector leans towards integration within the value chain, expanding its assembly lines to supply modules instead of components, in order to become a strategic partner and not just a parts supplier. It also invests in R&D to offer higher value equipment, giving it a sustainable competitive edge. The sector is also turning to specialization; that is, developing unique, high-tech products and retaining the intellectual property rights to them. Sector associations SERNAUTO www.sernauto.es The Spanish Association of Automotive Equipment and Parts was established in 1967. It is the most representative entity in the sector. Of the 1,000 Spanish companies that manufacture automotive equipment and parts, over 350 are SERNAUTO members. The main objectives of SERNAUTO include representing the industry before national and international organizations, as well as supporting its promotion both within Spain and abroad. 3
