FLASHLIGHT ANSI STANDARDS While Pelian was one of the first manufaturers to use quantifiable test proedures, the need was reognized to develop a ommon language that ustomers ould use to selet the right flashlight for their speifi needs. As a result, the Amerian National Standards Institute (ANSI) with input from the flashlight industry, developed performane standards and symbols to effetively ommuniate a flashlight's features and benefits. Resulting ANSI/NEMA FL 1 Standards inlude the six riteria desribed below: LIGHT OUTPUT Light Output is the total luminous flux. It is the total quantity of emitted overall light energy as measure by integrating the entire angular output of the portable light soure. Light output in this standart is expressed in units of lumens. RUN TIME Run Time is defined as the duraton of time from the initial light output value defined as 30 seons after the point the devie is first turned on using fresh batteries, until the light output reahes 10% of the initial value. BEAM DISTANCE Beam Distane is defined as the distane from the devie at whih the light beam is 0.25 lux (0.25 lux is approximately the equivalent of the light emitted from the full moon "on a lear night in an open field"). PEAK BEAM INTENSITY Peak Beam Intensity is the maximum luminous intensity typially along the entral axis of a one of light. The value is reported in andela and does not hange with distane. IMPACT RESISTANCE Impat Resistane is the degree to whih a devie resists damage from dropping on a solid surfae. IPX4 WATER PENETRATION RATINGS IPX4 - Water Resistane - Water splashed against the devie from any diretion shall have no harmful effets. IPX4 / IPX7 WATER PENETRATION RATINGS IPX7 - Water Proof - Ingress of water in quantities ausing harmful effets shall not be possible when the enlosure is temporarily immersed in water under standardized onditions of pressure and time. IPX8 - Submersible - Ingress of water in quantities ausing harmful effets shall not be possible when the enlosure is ontinuously immersed in water under onditions whih shall be stated by manufaturer, but whih are more severe than for IPX7.

ANSI (AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARDS INSITUTE) These standards are aredited by ANSI, whih is a private non-profit organization that oversees the development of voluntary onsensus standards for produts, servies, proesses, systems, and personnel in the United States. The organization also oordinates U.S. standards with international standards so Amerian produts an be used globally. GLOSSARY OF TERMS Candela - A unit of measurement of the intensity of light that is, power emitted by a light soure in a partiular diretion. Lux - The unit of luminous flux in the International System, equal to the amount of light given out through a solid angle by a soure of one andela intensity radiating equally in all diretions. Lumen - A unit of measurement of the amount of brightness that omes from a light soure. Lumens define "luminous flux," whih is energy within the range of frequenies we pereive as light. Integrating Sphere - An integrating sphere is a measurement devie with an entrane port that an aept all the diretional light output of the devie under test, or an totally enlose the devie itself. The walls of the sphere should be highly diffuse with high refletivity (>80%) and the spetroradiometer should be shielded from diret view of the devie under test by a baffle system. IP (Ingress Protetion) - Ingress Protetion (IP) ratings speify the environmental protetion the enlosure provides. The IP rating normally has two numbers (IPXX). The first number represents protetion from solid objets or materials (dust) where the seond number represents protetion from liquids (water). With the IP rating IP 54, 5 desribes the level of protetion from solid objets and 4 desribes the level of protetion from liquids.

All were satisfatory and are summarized in the following setions. All data is on file at FMRC along with other douments and orrespondene appliable to this program. 3.1 N oninendive Examination - N oninendive equipment aeptability is based on the inability of the apparatus to release suffiient eletrial or thermal energy under normal operating onditions to ause ignition of speifi hazardous atmospheres. 3.1.1 Enlosure Pressure Test - Pressure testing was onduted on a series of six samples to determine the maximum internal pressure prior to venting. The test was onduted on a fully assembled model void of batteries. This test is required only for sealed flashlights. The results are as follows: Maximum Pressure MityLite Magnum, 2300 Super PeliLite, 1800 3.4 psi 2.2 psi The above models utilize a threaded over to atuate the lamp. A seond set of tests was onduted to verify that there is no ejetion of the over or parts of the devie. With the batteries in plae, the threaded over was unsrewed two turns past the extinguishing point of the lamp. Pressure was applied until venting ourred. There was no rupturing of the lens, over, or any other parts. 3.1.2 Make/Break Evaluation - Spark ignition testing was onduted using a 21 % hydrogen-in-air mixture at 1.1 times the maximum reorded venting pressure. A series of six tests on a battery set was onduted in its intended onfiguration for eah battery type and manufaturer. A fresh set of batteries was used for eah test. Results are as follows: 3.1.2.1 Models 2300, 2250 and 2270 - The test iruit onsisted of two fresh "AA" ells with no lamp resistane in the iruit. The gas mixture was pressurized to 3.74 psi A series of six tests were onduted using Duraell MNl 500 ells, Eveready Energizer E91 ells and Ray-0-Va AL-AA ells. Results were satisfatory in that there was no ignition of the test gas. 3.1.2.2 Model 1800 - The test iruit onsisted of two fresh "C" ells with no lamp resistane in the iruit. The gas mixture was pressurized to 2.40 psi. A series of six tests were onduted using Duraell MN1400 ells, Eveready Energizer E93 ells and Ray-0-Va AL-C ells. Results were satisfatory in that there was no ignition of the test gas.
