2010 KX250F High-Performance, Liquid Cooled, 4-Stroke Engine A winner around the world, the KX250F has been upated for 2010 with changes to both the engine and chassis to help keep the KX250F ahead of the pack. Engine refinements increase high-rpm and over-rev performance, while chassis updates help make the KX250F faster turning and easier to ride fast. New for 2010 ENGINE PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTS Factory-style forged piston has a revised profile with a shorter skirt, reinforced external ribs and the first mass-production use of a bridged-box bottom with fully-flush internal bracing so it is lighter and stronger than ever while improving performance at all engine speeds. Revised piston crown helps improve combustion. Shorter piston pin contributes to reduced reciprocating weight. The non-tapered portion of the exhaust pipe is 30mm longer to help increase low-end performance. The radiators are 10mm thicker and 7.0mm wider with increased tube and fin pitch. The new design makes them stronger so that reinforcing brackets could be eliminated and better resist mud build-up. 2009 2009 2010 2010 Electrofusion treatment on cylinder bore results in a surface with good oil retention. Further, the molybdenum on the surface of the cylinder bore helps resist scorching, contributing to durability. Wider (18mm >> 19 mm) big-end bearing featuring thicker copper plating on its cage, and a longer crank pin offer increased reliability. Revised oil pump rotors offer increased reliability and durability. Feed pump rotor size is larger (5 mm >> 5.5 mm), increasing oil fow; scavenge pump rotor is smaller (11 mm >> 10.5 mm), reducing mechanical loss. Larger dogs on the 3rd and 4th input gears help prevent wear, and revising the 4th input gear holding method (by eliminating a circlip and washer and changing the shape of the 2nd input gear) reduces thrust clearance. These changes offer increased shifting reliability. The right crankcase is reinforced at the lower engine mounts for increased strength and durability. Exhaust pipe s new stainless steel construction is more durable. Revised joint between the exhaust pipe and muffler ofers increased sealing performance. Rubber damper collar used for the rear silencer mount also contributes to increased durability. CHASSIS PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTS New steering stem shaft diameter is 1.0 mm less for reduced rigidity and lighter handling. Revised fork settings optimize front/rear balance for a flatter chassis posture. Revised cross section shape in the swingarm also contributes to lighter handling. Revised Uni-Trak linkage ratios help increase rear wheel traction. Combined with the less rigid steering stem, fork action is smoother soaks up the bumps better. Revised shock damping settings soak up the bumps better and offer increased control in braking bumps to enhance performance on corner entry. New rear brake pads improve brake feel and stopping power. DURABILITY ENHANCEMENTS Connecting rod big end and bearing are 1mm wider, the crank pin 1mm longer and the copper plating on the bearing cage is thicker for increased reliability. Increased spring tension on the Kawasaki Automatic Compression Release makes starting easier. New stainless steel exhaust pipe construction offers enhanced durability, while a revised muffler joint improves sealing and durability. The radiators are 10mm thicker and 4mm wider with increased tube and fin pitch. The new design makes them stronger so that reinforcing brackets could be eliminated and better resist mud build-up. Larger dogs on the third and fourth input gears help prevent wear, and a revised fourth input gear holding method reduces thrust clearance for increased shifting reliability. The right crankcase is reinforced at the lower engine mounts for increased strength and durability. Firmer seat foam is more durable and holds its shape longer. New rims are stronger and lighter. High Performance 4-Stroke Engine Cases designed to carry less oil to reduce weight and mechanical loss. Oiling system sprays oil over the top of the transmission for more effective lubrication.
Balance enhances crankshaft mid- and high-speed performance while reducing vibration. The piston skirt is streaked with a fine, spiral-cut groove that increases oil retention for better lubrication and durability. Compact, lightweight design to centralize mass and inertia points, and minimize overall engine height. Connecting rod and crankshaft are case hardened for durability and rigidity. The big-end bearing features caged needle bearings for high rpm reliability. Special main bearings reduce mechanical losses and allow the engine to rev more freely. Aluminum cylinder with electrofusion provides rapid heat transfer, superb wear resistance and optimum lubrication retention for increased performance and durability. Thin walled crankcases reduce weight. Semi-dry sump lubrication system for quicker engine response. The majority of oil is stored in the transmission to keep excess oil away from the crankshaft and prevent power-robbing stirring loss. With only a shallow chamber to collect oil at the bottom of the crankcase, where a scavenge pump moves it to the transmission, the crank is located as low as possible to help lower the center of gravity. Crankcase pressure is reduced by way of a reed valve between the crankcase and transmission. Engine cases are vented through the kickstart mechanism. Holes in the kickstart idler gear are matched to holes in the kickstart shaft. As the idler gear spins on the shaft, centrifugal force prevents oil from going through the gear, into the shaft and out of the engine while allowing excess pressure to escape. Twin oil pumps ensure proper lubrication and oil scavenging for optimum performance. To eliminate external oil lines, oil passages are built into engine cases to reduce weight and improve reliability. 4-Valve Cylinder Head Intake port uses an extremely smooth coating to help improve performance at all engine speeds, and especially at high rpm. Intake valves have a thick head and are made of a special titanium alloy for increased strength and durability. The head gasket is silicone coated for better sealing. Intake and exhaust port roofs are shaped for maximum flow and velocity. Lightweight titanium valves (31mm intake and 25mm exhaust) reduce reciprocating weight. Valves are coated with an oxidized membrane treatment to resist wear. Stiff valve springs help ensure reliable valve control at high-rpm. Special valve seat material helps prevent wear on the titanium valves. Located on the exhaust camshaft, the Automatic Compression Release (KACR) allows for easy starting. Lightweight Exhaust System Long fiber muffler packing is thick and has long fibers to extend intervals between muffler packing. The bolt-on silencer core provides easy access for changing the packing. Keihin FCR Carburetor Settings enhance acceleration. Race inspired 37mm FCR carburetor with accelerator pump offers precise fuel metering. Equipped with a hot start lever for easy starting when the engine is hot. When the lever is pulled, a small plunger at the front of the carburetor opens a passage that draws additional air into the intake tract. More air leans out the fuel mixture to make starting a hot engine easier. U-packing seal on hot start plunger cable prevents water from getting into the carburetor. Digital Capacitor Discharge Ignition with TPS Lost Spark Control smooths over-rev power by precisely cutting spark as the engine nears redline. Spark gradually starts tapering off at 12,000 rpm before the 13,500 rpm rev limiter is reached so that power does not abruptly cut-out when the rev limiter is activated, like conventional systems. Acceleration Compensator monitors changes in rpm and adjusts ignition map to prevent wheel spin and improve traction. Phase-sensitive coil added to stator helps prevent kick-back during starting. Spark plug-mounted stick type ignition coil is compact and offers precise spark delivery. K-TRIC system uses a digital microcomputer to monitor throttle position and engine rpm and adjusts ignition timing to maintain maximum power and minimise engine braking effect. Neutral sensor activates separate ignition map to make starting easier. 5-Speed Transmission Ratchet-style shift mechanism for smoother shifting and a more positive feel.thick gears increase transmission durability. Clutch cable mount is now integrated with the crankcase and is more rigid for better clutch feel. Stiff clutch springs for more direct clutch feel at the lever. Clutch release lever complements the stiff clutch spring rate. Teflon lined clutch cable provides smooth action and clutch feel. Liquid Cooling System Water jacket provides consistent flow for improved cylinder cooling. The water pump is placed adjacent to the oil filter cavity to provide heat dispersion from engine oil. Separate oil filter/water pump cover allows for easy oil filter maintenance.
Aluminum Perimeter Frame Designed to help optimize rigidity for quicker, better handling and reduce overall frame weight. Wide footpegs are located high for optimum cornering clearance, and the frame is narrow at the peg mounts for improved riding position and cornering clearance. Composed of a combination of forged, extruded and cast parts, the aluminum frame is designed with a balance of torsional and longitudinal rigidity for superior handling. Design emphasis on improving traction under acceleration. Specific chassis dimensions (swingarm pivot, output shaft, linkage mounts, and rear axle) placed to prevent chassis squat and improve traction. Centralised key inertia points improve handling. Uni-Trak Rear Suspension Rear shock features a large 50mm piston and body design that, when combined with the valving settings, improves overall performance and provides better response and feeling when the shock is fully bottomed. Uni-Trak rear suspension linkage ratios suit the aluminum frame and swingarm. The linkage bushings are all collared sleeves for easy maintenance. The shock features dual compression adjustability, allowing high-speed and low-speed damping to be tuned separately. Threaded preload allows many tuning options. Thin shock spring coils reduce weight. Inverted Twin-Chamber Cartridge Fork Titanium coating on the inner fork tubes provides less friction for improved fork response, and the blue color adds to the factory look. Outer fork tube shape works with new upper triple clamp shape to optimize rigidity balance for better handling. Fork tube guards wrap around the lower fork tubes for better protection. Small holes at the top of the cartridge slows the rate air is displaced during compression. Since the air helps act as a spring, the slightly increased air pressure during compression helps produce more linear damping characteristics and smooths out the initial part of the stroke. The Showa twin-chamber fork keeps oil and air in separate chambers for stable damping performance lap after lap. Hours of track time determined ideal set-up for the front and rear suspension. The front and rear suspension characteristics, as well as how the suspension interacts with the aluminium frame, give you stability on the gas or on the brakes. Fully-adjustable damping allows the suspension to be tuned for specific conditions. The bolt-on handlebar mounts have rubber dampers to reduce vibration and can be rotated to change handlebar position. Front and Rear Disc Brakes Petal brake discs front and rear reduce unsprung weight, and help clean the brake pads for more efficient braking performance. Two-piston front brake caliper with semi-floating disc. Forged aluminum rear brake pedal has a large mounting bolt and the lever has a large foot with sharp teeth to provide a solid feel, and easier operation in difficult conditions. Integrated rear brake fluid reservoir/master cylinder for reliability. Detail Features Resin skid plate extends all the way to the frame down tube for greater protection with no weight gain over aluminum skid plate. A works-style Renthal (standard-type, K971 bend) aluminium handlebar saves more than half a pound in weight. Black wheels, triple clamps, and lightweight magnesium clutch, generator and cylinder head covers complement Kawasaki s racey lime green colour.
