The Rob Report The 2012 Grand National was a great success. The hotel was top-notch and St. Augustine is rich with history, making for excellent sightseeing. Our very own Craig Chally won the individual long distance award for driving his 1977 Coupe deville all the way from Newbury Park and back. Jerry Hopper drove Old Gold his 1967 Eldorado from the O.C. and then shipped her home. Congratulations to Len Berman, David Chestnut, Lauren Schweitzer, Marsha Redman, Lee Herbermann, and all the volunteers that put on a great Grand National. BASEBALL CAPS Order your SoCal CLC caps today! BLACK only one size fits all. $25 each, postage included. Please see below for ordering information. Fred Bausch recently retired from his post as Western Regions Vice President. We thank him for many years of service. Fred will continue in his capacity as Vice President of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club Museum & Research Center. Tim Coy has graciously agreed to be the new Western Regions VP. I am personally grateful for Tim s willingness to take this position. The 49th annual North-South meet is set for October 5-7 at the Apple Farm in San Luis Obispo. Twenty-seven rooms have been set aside in the Trellis Court for us and our cars. Reservations can be made by calling 805-544- 2040 for event rates mention the Cadillac LaSalle Club when reserving. We hope that you will join us! The annual Regional National at Ruby s at the beach is only a month away. Please register now the flyer is page seven of this newsletter. The editor of our exquisitely beautiful newsletter will step down at the end of this year to pursue other activities for a few years. He has not ruled out the possibility of returning to the Crest & Wings around 2016. The region is therefore looking for a new editor to serve for a few years. Please contact me if interested! Rob MULTI-MAKE EXTRAVAGANZA IN PALM SPRINGS Diversity of makes was the unstated theme of our May 6 event in Palm Springs, where we toured seven spaces filled with private collections. Our hosts were Chris Menrad, Bill Stewart, Kenny Cassady, John Boccardo, Derek Esplin, Bill Scheffler, Andy Linsky, Scott King, and Sandy Edelstein. Since most of these men are not members of the CLC, it was a unique opportunity to see cars not shown at our other events. POLO SHIRTS SoCal CLC Polos are available in RED or BLACK, in both MEN s and WOMEN s cuts. $35 each, postage included. Please specify SIZE and COLOR and include your name, address, and phone number when ordering. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGION of CLC, Inc. c/o Linda Leonard 5016 West 131st St. Hawthorne, CA 90250-5021 Brunch was catered by Leon s Bar & Grille and was unusually good, especially the sausages. Most of us managed to finish brunch before the receding shade disappeared completely. If we had given a Hard Luck Award, it would have gone to Brian Keligian, whose 1974 Coupe de Ville needed an emergency pulley by-pass or A/C compressor transplant. Luckily, the problem was discovered before he set out across the desert and several knowledgeable people assisted. Of the more than 150 cars on display, it would be hard to choose a favorite. Some wanted to sit in the Rolls-Royces. One collector was kind enough to shoe-horn the editor in and out of 3 Continued on page 4.

OBSCURE CARS OF YESTERYEAR The obscure car in the March-April issue is a 1950 Tatra, a Czech car. The winner is Dave Ventresca. Honorable mentions to Frank Burns, whose relative owned a Tatra, Jim Higgins and Jack Heacock. Please see page 5 for a new obscure car. (There is no charge or ridicule for guessing incorrectly!) NATIONAL CORNER International affiliates (which are not the same as regions) have a new manager. She is Antonia Nabholz-Huse. his 1972 Honda Z. It is unclear who won the bet about his being able to get in and out of one! Other foreign cars included Jaguars and Benzs, a Citroen SM, a gray Ferrari coupe and a very jazzy red Maserati coupe, circa 1963. Jay Davenport was pleased to see a somewhat less jazzy 1961 Cadillac Series 62. If you have a project car but progress on it is lagging, there is nothing like a SoCal Region event to get your inspiration back. Sooner or later, you will see all of the major car makers represented at our events and be able to speak with many of the owners. At right, Brian Hermansader admires a circa 1963 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III. A 1963 Series 62 convertible and 1958 Fleetwood Sixty Special were brought by tour participants. Below right, the impeccable lines of the 1961 Continental. Below, the Editor s Choice Comfy Naptime Award went to the 1956 Crown Imperial. 4

The CLC Museum and Research Center will build its museum on the 90-acre complex at the Gilmore Car Museum near Kalamazoo, Michigan. See the site on YouTube: http:// w w w. y o u t u b e. c o m / u s e r / a n g e l l e 1 6 6? feature=mhum#p/a/u/1/mgk_utp_-7k. Donations to build the new museum building are greatly needed and appreciated and are tax deductible. P.O. Box 252796, West Bloomfield, MI 48325. OBSCURE CARS OF YESTERYEAR What kind of car is it? Hint: Successful American maker. The first member who correctly identifies the model year (exactly) and make wins a free CLC windshield decal. Send your answer at once to th@clcsocal.com. The back seat of a 1958 Series 62, with its embossed V above the armrest. Below, another 1958 car, the Edsel Bermuda. At right, the original upholstery of this 1978 Mercury Bobcat is not so different from 1974-75 Cadillac orange Metamora Cloth. Believe it or not. 5

PLEASE KEEP YOUR REGIONAL AND NATIONAL MEMBERSHIPS CURRENT TO PARTICIPATE IN GREAT EVENTS LIKE THESE. Cadillac was not the only car to have the tail pipe through the rear bumper. Above, a circa 1955 Facel-Vega FV-1, one of the rarest cars on display. French and $$$$. The 1960 De Soto had a little different taillight treatment. The collections featured several interesting Chryslers, De Sotos and Plymouths. The era of big hair on women and big glass on cars. Above right, the 1972 Honda Z (aka Z600, for cc displacement of export model) is 50% larger than a golf cart. (Honda is pronounced hone-da in Japan.) At right is its contemporary, a 1972 Mercury Cyclone. 6
