Hartlepool monthly report March 2018 Introduction Welcome to the March 2018 monthly report for Hartlepool power station. These reports are available to all members of the public on http://www.edfenergy.com. We are keen to hear the views of our local communities. We recognise that good communication is a two-way process and we welcome your feedback and comments. Safety Operational safety On 22 March 2018 Reactor 1 was manually shut down as the unit was returning to power following its statutory outage. Environmental safety There were no environmental safety incidents in March. Minor injuries The site recorded six minor injuries during March, two of which were dealt with by onsite first-aiders. The site takes safety very seriously and incidents are investigated fully to ensure they are avoided in the future. Plant status Hartlepool has two advanced gas-cooled reactors with a net generation capacity of 1180 MWhs. As at 31 March 2018: Reactor 1: The unit remains off line following the completion of the outage to carry out some further mechanical repairs. Reactor 2: Unit is at full load. During March 2018, Hartlepool power station generated enough low carbon electricity to power 101,259 homes avoiding 0.14 (MtCO2e), the equivalent of taking 62,666 UK passenger cars off the road when compared to direct emissions of Combined Cycle Gas turbines

Hartlepool visitor centre March 2018 In total, the centre welcomed 588 visitors in March 2018, with 177 visitors taking a pre-arranged tour. In addition, teams from the visitor centre supported six outreach events, engaging with over 540 individuals. This visit and outreach activities included: St Hilds secondary school, Year 10 careers event Grange primary school careers event Year 12 careers event at Stockton Riverside College, Billingham Fens primary school careers events St Mary s RC primary school, Richmond Barnard School primary school visits Hartlepool welcomes tours Monday Friday and some Saturday mornings. Please contact Louise Corser on 01429 853582, email hartlepoolsitetours@edf-energy.com or visit https://www.edfenergy.com/energy/education/visitor-centres for further information. Breast Cancer Now ~ Charity Golf Day ~ Friday 27 April 2018 EDF Energy and Breast Cancer Now, the UK s largest breast cancer charity, are working together for three years. EDF Energy s employee fundraising target is 100,000 each year and EDF Energy will match fund up to 50,000 each year of the partnership making a total target of 450,000. To support the stations fund-raising activities a Charity Golf Day has been arranged at Hartlepool Golf Club on Friday 27 April 2018. Cost per team of three in 75 and includes all fees and a light lunch. To reserve your tee off time please contact Louise Corser on 01429 853582 or email hartlepoolsitetours@edf-energy.com. EDF Energy at Hartlepool power station ~ 6 th form mentoring programme The station linked up with Hartlepool Sixth Form College in September 2012, English Martyrs Sixth Form College in 2013 and Dyke House 6 th Form in 2014, to work alongside various groups of budding young engineers interested in potential careers here at the station and in the broader north east economy.

The partnership, which is now working with its sixth group of students, provides the students with an individual mentor. In March our fifth cohort of students attended site for their second development centre, taking part in various team building exercises, concluding their mentoring programme with the station. We wish them success in their future educational and career paths. Alice House Hospice, Bright Sparks Award Ceremony Children and budding entrepreneurs have been taking part in the Bright Sparks Challenge to raise funds for Alice House Hospice. The competition, sponsored by EDF Energy at Hartlepool power station, had seven entries challenged with raising as much money as possible from an initial stake of 20. The overall winner was Sacred Heart RC Primary School who raised 667. They were presented with the EDF Bright Sparks Trophy, a cheque for 100 for school funds and a Gold Award at an awards event at the visitor centre in March. All teams were invited to the award ceremony which was held at the EDF Energy visitor centre. Craig Dohring, station director at Hartlepool power station, said We were delighted to be asked to support this innovative fundraising scheme. The station has been partner with Alice House for many years now and it s a charity that is very close to all the team here. The challenge to youngsters to work with a small amount of money and then see how they can grow it was a fantastic idea and one that could even create the next Alan Sugar right here in Hartlepool. Anyone who is interested in taking part in the next challenge which is open to schools, colleges, youth groups and individuals can contact Janice on 01429 855536 or jforbes@alicehousehospice.co.uk

Company News March 2018 Sizewell C and Bradwell B power stations economic boost MPs, Lords and business leaders from the East of England were shown the economic boost delivered from building a new nuclear power station at a meeting in Westminster. They met suppliers and apprentices as EDF Energy launched a new report detailing the training, skills, jobs and local contracts made possible by the construction of its Hinkley Point C power station in Somerset. EDF Energy is already at work with business and education groups in the east to repeat the success story at the proposed Sizewell C and Bradwell B power stations. The report shows that almost 200 apprentices have already started careers at Hinkley Point. The report also shows that more than 465m of contracts have been awarded in the south-west and that a third of employment opportunities are due to be filled by local people. John Dugmore, Suffolk Chamber of Commerce chief executive said: The event shows how new nuclear can support the regional economy and can give a long-lasting boost to regional and local businesses. Jim Crawford, Sizewell C project development director, said: Nuclear has a bigger impact on jobs and skills than any other technology - especially compared to importing energy. We are determined to use that impact to leave a positive legacy and today s report shows that we are delivering on our promises. Bradwell B in Essex would follow the Sizewell project multiplying the positive effect on people and the economy from Sizewell B and C. Glossary of terms: Term Environmental event or incident Outage Unit Definition Environmental events arise from wastes or discharges above permitted levels or breaches of permitted conditions. A period during which a reactor is shut down. The periodic shutdown of a reactor including for maintenance, inspection and testing or, in some cases, for refuelling is known as a planned outage. In the UK, some planned outages are known as statutory outages and are required by the conditions attached to the nuclear site licence needed to operate the station. Unscheduled shutdown of a reactor for a period is known as an unplanned outage. A unit refers to one of the reactors at the power station and its generating turbine.
