THE PUGET SOUND ROCKET Newsletter of the Puget Sound Olds Club An Official Chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America March 2013 On February 11, the Puget Sound Olds Chapter lost one of our dearest members, Bill Iverson. Bill fought a valiant seven year battle with cancer but is now free from the pain of the disease. Many of our chapter members honored Bill with their attendance at his funeral service on Feb. 15 at St. Anthony s Catholic Church in Renton. Bill served for many years as the PSOC Membership chairman, reminding us that it was time to pay our dues. (Kathi, you have big shoes to fill.) Bill and Judy also for many years brought the coffee pot to the monthly chapter meetings as part of their dedication to the chapter. Attending Bill s service were many friends and co-workers from the Boeing Company. Bill retired from Boeing in 1995 but the friends that he made honored him with their attendance at his service. That is a testimony to the impact that Bill had on many lives. Surviving Bill are his wife, Judy; son, David (Samantha); daughter Diane (Tom) and three grandchildren. Bill is also survived by a brother and sister. Between the Bumpers MEETING MINUTES PAGE 3 Page 6 Puget Sound Oldsmobile Club March 2013 1

So please bring them to our next meeting. For those of you who are unable to attend our meetings, you can mail the story and photo to me at 13209 Quil-scenic Dr. Marysville, WA 98271 We lost a very good friend and long time member, Bill Iverson. Bill played a big part in the Oldsmobile club. He was our membership chairman for many years as well as he would always try to help. Jim goes to the Monroe swap meet every year he always said he would see Bill there to see if he could find a possible new member, showing our large Oldsmobile signs and talking to anyone he could about our chapter. I want to thank everyone who joined our club to honor Bill Iverson and his family for the nice man he was and to support Judy. Good bye Bill, we will miss you. I hope someone has thought of something we can do after the meeting it might be fun to go for a lunch, or just a cruise. BETWEEN THE BUMPERS By Ed With the unusual papal resignation grabbing headlines worldwide, what better time to take a look at a former pontiff s very stylish ride, custom made for a visit to New York in 1965 and now on display at the LeMay America s Car Museum in Tacoma, Washington. Lehmann-Peterson in Chicago built this 21-foot-long 1964 Lincoln Continental parade limousine for Ford in less than two weeks, in preparation for Pope Paul VI s visit to New York City and subsequent address to the United Nations in October of 1965. The car rides on a 160-inch wheelbase and was outfitted with exterior step plates and handrails, a public address system, a raised seat for the pope, a removable roof section with a windscreen and a transparent rear roof/window attachment, as well as a bank of seven batteries for auxiliary power. The car is said to have worked without a hitch during the pontiff s visit, which included his address to the U.N. as well as a mass at Yankee Stadium and a trip across the Bronx and Queens to the World s Fair in Flushing Meadow. After the papal visit, the Lincoln was loaned to the city of Chicago where it served as a parade car and courtesy vehicle for visiting dignitaries. In 1968, it was used to transport the pope around Bogotá, Colombia, for the 39th Eucharistic Congress. Bogota sits at a lofty 8,600 feet above sea level, so modifications had to be made to deal with the high altitudes. Ford and Lehmann- Peterson apparently had only 12 days to prep the car, but it again provided the pope with trouble-free transportation. The Lincoln s service to historic figures didn t end there, however. Following the successful first lunar orbit and the safe return of the Apollo 8 astronauts to Earth on December 27, 1968, mission Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders rode in this Lincoln during a tickertape parade through Chicago, held in their honor. Astronauts from the Apollo 11 mission that put the first humans on the moon, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins also rode in the car, as did astronauts from the infamous Apollo 13 mission and Apollo 15.The car then changed hands a couple of times and was last sold at the Bonhams Quail Lodge auction at Pebble Beach in 2011 for $220,000.
