Stay alert for hidden hazards or traffic. DO NOT operate near drop-offs, ditches, or embankments. Unit can suddenly turn over if a wheel is over the edge of a cliff or ditch, or if an edge caves in. Data indicates that operators, age 0 and above, are involved in a larger percentage of Verticutter-related injuries. These operators should evaluate their ability to operate the equipment safely enough to protect themselves and others from serious injury. GB

Read the entire Owner/Operator manual and other training material. If the operator or the mechanic cannot read the manual, it is the owner s responsibility to explain it to them. Only the user can prevent and is responsible for accidents or injuries occurring to themselves, other people or property. Only trained adults may operate or service unit. Training includes actual operation. Local regulations may restrict the age of the operator. NEVER allow children to operate or play on or near unit. Be alert and shut off unit if children enter area. NEVER operate unit after or during the use of medication, drugs or alcohol. Safe operation requires your complete and unimpaired attention at all times. DO NOT wear loose clothing or jewelry and tie back hair that may get caught in rotating parts. Wear adequate outer garments. NEVER wear open sandals or canvas shoes during operation. Wear adequate safety gear, protective gloves and footwear. Wear proper footwear to improve footing on slippery surfaces. Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields when operating Verticutter. Moving parts can cut or amputate fingers or a hand. Wear gloves to service. NEVER place your hands or any part of your body or clothing inside or near any moving part while unit is running. ALWAYS keep hands and feet away from all rotating parts during operation. Rotating parts can cut off body parts. ALWAYS keep body and hands away from pin holes or nozzles which eject hydraulic fluid under pressure. DO NOT touch parts which are hot. Allow parts to cool. ALWAYS keep hands and feet away from all pinch points. Read, understand, and follow all instructions in the manual and on the machine before starting. Understand: How to operate all controls The functions of all controls How to STOP in an Emergency Braking and steering characteristics Turning radius and clearances Keep safety devices or guards in place and functioning properly. NEVER modify or remove safety devices. Start and operate unit only when seated in operator s position. PTO must be disengaged and parking brake set when starting engine. Do not permit anyone to stand between tractor and Verticutter, especially while attaching to tractor. Use care when approaching blind corners, shrubs, trees or other objects that may obscure vision. Dust, smoke, fog, etc. can reduce vision and cause an accident. Mow only in daylight or good artificial light. Avoid slippery surfaces. Always be sure of your footing. DO NOT mow on wet grass. Reduced traction could cause sliding and effect the machine s stability. Do not turn tractor too tight; Verticutter may ride up on the wheels causing injury or damage. Watch for traffic when operating near or crossing roadways. Never carry passengers. Never direct discharge towards persons or property that may be injured or damaged by thrown objects. ALWAYS disengage PTO, stop unit and engine, remove key, engage parking brake and allow moving parts to stop before leaving operator s position. Disengage the tractor s PTO before raising mowing units for transport. Never engage PTO while raising mowing units or when mowing units are in raised position. Raising mowing units " (1 mm) or higher with PTO engaged will result in damage. Keep PTO shielding in place and in good condition. Do not operate with shields missing. ALWAYS block up or securely support Verticutter before working underneath. Hydraulic system failure can cause mowing units to fall and cause serious injury or death. DO NOT operate at too fast a rate. Slow down before turning. DO NOT operate in reverse unless absolutely necessary. ALWAYS look down and behind before and while backing. Stop and inspect equipment if you strike an object or if there is an unusual vibration. Repair, if necessary, before restarting. Never make adjustments or repairs with the engine running. Verticutter reels are sharp and can cut you. Use extra caution when servicing them. Rotation of one reel may cause rotation of the other reel. Take all possible precautions when leaving unit unattended. Shut off tractor engine and remove key to prevent unauthorized use. Know the weight of loads. Limit loads to those you can safely control and the unit can safely handle. Disengage PTO when Verticutter is not in use. ALWAYS disengage Verticutter when travelling, crossing driveways, etc. Mow up and down slopes, not across them. DO NOT operate on slopes of more than 1 degrees. Use of a Rollover Protection System (ROPS) on the tractor is recommended for slope operation. Always wear a seat belt when operating tow unit with a Rollover Protection System (ROPS). GB

Keep all movements on the slope slow and gradual. Do not make sudden changes in speed or direction. Avoid starting or stopping on the slope. If tires lose traction, disengage the reels and proceed slowly straight down the slope. If you cannot back up a slope or you feel uneasy on it, do not mow it. DO NOT park on slopes unless necessary. When parking on slope always chock or block wheels. Always set parking brake. Use a slow speed. Tires may lose traction on slopes even though the brakes are functioning properly. Do not bypass transmission when on a slope. Tow only with a tractor that has a hitch designed for towing. Do not attach towed equipment except at the hitch point. Follow the manufacturer s recommendations for weight limits for towed equipment and towing on slopes. Tractor counterweights may be required for optimal steering control. Refer to tractor s operating manual. NEVER allow children or others in or on towed equipment. On slopes, the weight of the towed equipment may cause loss of control. Travel slowly and allow extra distance to stop. Use extra care when loading or unloading unit onto trailer or truck. Secure unit chassis to transport vehicle. NEVER secure from rods or linkages that could be damaged. Transport Verticutter with transport chain in place. Block the Verticutter units securely to take the load off to the lift chains and lift mechanism. Do not exceed 0 MPH ( KMH) transport speed. Keep unit free of debris. Clean up oil spills. ALWAYS block wheels and know all jack stands are strong and secure and will hold weight of unit during maintenance. Release pressure slowly from components with stored energy. NEVER attempt to make any adjustments to unit while it is running. Stop tractor engine and remove key and wait for all moving parts to stop before servicing or cleaning. Check tractor parking brake operation frequently. Adjust and service as required. ALWAYS maintain unit in safe operating condition. Maintain or replace safety and instruction labels, as necessary. Check all hardware at regular intervals. Keep properly tightened. Check moving components frequently. If worn or damaged, replace with manufacturer s recommended parts. GB

OPERATION GENERAL SAFETY Only qualified people familiar with this Owner/Operator Manual and the tractor operator s manual should operate this Verticutter. Operator should wear hard hat, safety glasses and safety shoes. The operator should read, understand and practice all safety messages shown on the caution, warning and danger decals affixed to the Verticutter to avoid serious injury or death. It is recommended that tractors be equipped with Rollover Protective System (ROPS) and a seat belt must be used. Before beginning operation, clear work area of any objects that may be picked up and thrown, and check for ditches, stumps, holes or other obstacles that could upset tractor or damage Verticutter. Always lower Verticutter to ground and allow reels to come to a complete stop, set parking brake, and turn off the tractor s engine before leaving the tractor operator s seat. ATTACHMENT Leveling the Frame Tongue Adjustment The clevis hitch may be rotated and mounted in six different positions for leveling the frame. See Figure. Tractor Hook-Up 1. Position the tractor close to the hitch. Use the Verticutter tongue jack to raise or lower the tongue to level the Verticutter s frame.. Adjust Verticutter hitch height to match tractor drawbar height. Keep frame level with tractor and Verticutter on level ground. Place a -ft. (1. m) carpenter s level across the square frame segments front to rear and adjust hitch height to level the frame.. Attach Verticutter with a /" (19 mm) hitch pin and secure with a lock pin. IMPORTANT: Always use a hitch pin that contains a safety locking device to prevent it from falling out.. Lower the tongue jack until the weight of the Verticutter is fully removed from the jack, then remove the jack. Place the jack in the storage base located on the mainframe weldment. See Figure. 1" ( mm) Figure " (1 mm) -/" (0 mm) " ( mm) " (10 -/" (11. Attach the safety chain on the frame hitch to the tractor. Adjust the chain length to remove all slack except what is necessary to permit turning of the Verticutter. Lock the hook securely on the chain.. Attach the driveline to the tractor. The end with the constant velocity joint connects to the tractor s PTO shaft. Attach the other end to the splined input shaft on the center of the Verticutter frame. See Figure. Verticutter Jack Holder Figure Tractor PTO Shaft NOTE: The use of a drawbar hung between the -point hitch arms is not recommended. A straight drawbar attached to the rear-axle housing in the standard SAE position to the PTO is preferable. Constant Velocity Joint Figure GB 9

. Move the driveline back and forth to ensure that it is securely attached on the PTO shaft of the tractor and input shaft on the Verticutter.. Secure the driveline chain around the Verticutter frame to prevent the outer shield of the driveline from rotating. IMPORTANT: A chain is supplied with each driveline. This chain must be attached to the shield cone of each driveline and to an anchor ring on the Verticutter hitch. 9. Route the hydraulic hoses through the hose support and connect to tractor remote fittings. Shortening Driveline If the driveline requires shortening: 1. Position driveline half shafts in the shortest working position and mark.. Shorten inner and outer guard tubes equally.. Shorten inner and outer sliding shafts equally at the same length as the guard tubes.. Proper overlap is a minimum of one half of the length of each tube, with both tubes of equal length.. Round off all sharp edges and remove burrs. Apply grease to sliding shafts. Hydraulic Hose Connection 1. Route supply and return hydraulic hoses through hose guides on Verticutter unit. Ensure that hoses do not make contact with driveline and tractor drawbar.. Insert the hydraulic hose quick-disconnect fittings into the female quick-disconnect fittings on the tractor. Ensure that supply and return hoses from the Verticutter are mated to the supply and return hoses on the tractor. NOTE: Verticutter quick-disconnect fittings are SM Type 00 QC. If tractor is not fitted with quick-disconnect fittings an adaptor kit must be used. MOWING 1. Disconnect transport chain from between two rear lift arms.. Place the tractor hydraulic control in the lowering position and lower the mowing units to the ground. IMPORTANT: Avoid damage to hydraulic components. Do not attempt to lower Verticutter units with transport chain or lock pin in place.. Engage tractor PTO at low speed to avoid shock to Verticutter powertrain. CAUTION: Do not engage the PTO with mowing units in the raised transport position. Do not raise the mowing units with the PTO engaged. Make sure that the PTO is disengaged and the reels have stopped rotating before raising the mowing units.. Select appropriate tractor gear range (maximum -1/ mph or. km/h at rated PTO speed).. Accelerate to maximum PTO speed of 00 0 rpm. To raise the Verticutter units place the tractor hydraulic control in the lift position. Return the control to the neutral position once the Verticutter units have raised fully against the stops. GB 10

MAINTENANCE DRIVE BELTS Check condition of drive belts frequently. Replace damaged or overstretched belts. TIRES Tires should be checked regularly for damage, especially on units which are frequently transported on highways or rough roads. Regularly check tires for proper inflation. For inflation pressures see SPECIFICATIONS on page 1. CAUTION: Avoid injury! Explosive separation of tire and rim parts is possible when they are serviced incorrectly: Do not attempt to mount a tire without the proper equipment and experience to perform the job. Do not inflate the tires above the recommended pressure. Do not weld or heat a wheel and tire assembly. Heat can cause an increase in air pressure resulting in an explosion. Welding can structurally weaken or deform the wheel. Do not stand in front or over the tire assembly when inflating. Use a clip-on chuck and extension hose long enough to allow you to stand to one side. ANNUAL INSPECTION To ensure efficient operation and long life of your Verticutter, the following checks and maintenance should be carried out before storing the equipment at the end of the mowing season: 1. Perform all services outlined in the section on periodic maintenance.. Check jackshaft coupling to ensure that keys are in place and bolts are fully tightened.. Check that all split taper bushings are secure.. Check transport locks and springs for correct operation. Replace broken, damaged or worn components.. Wipe exposed cutting edges of bed knives and reel blades with light oil to prevent rusting.. Check that all safety guards are intact and securely fastened.. Check wheel bearings. a. Jack up carriage frame. b. Remove the wheel hubs. c. Clean and inspect wheel bearings and pack the cavity between the bearings with. cubic inches of high-quality general purpose grease (such as Mystick JT- High-Temp NLGI No., or equivalent). d. Adjust wheel bearings so that there is no end play but the wheel turns freely. IMPORTANT: Do not overtighten the bearings.. Check the rubber bumpers on the outer Verticutter unit lift stops. Replace worn or damaged bumpers. 9. Check that all Verticutter unit tie rods are secure and properly adjusted: a. Set Verticutter level on a flat surface, with center line of front and rear jackshafts the same height above ground level. b. Using a length of string as a visual tool, check the alignment of the Verticutter units as shown in Figure. GB 11

HYDRAULIC OIL SYSTEM WARNING: HYDRAULIC FLUID can result in severe burns. Fluid in hydraulic system can penetrate skin and result in serious injury or death. Be sure to stop the engine before doing any work on hydraulic parts. Keep body and hands away from pin holes or nozzles which expel hydraulic fluid when under pressure. Use paper or cardboard, not hands, to search for leaks. Ensure all hydraulic fluid connections are tight and all hydraulic hoses and lines are in good condition before applying pressure to system. FOREIGN FLUID INJECTED INTO BODY can result in gangrene. Fluid must be surgically removed within a few hours by a doctor familiar with this form of injury. Be sure to relieve all hydraulic pressure before disconnecting any lines between the implement and the tractor hydraulic system. MAIN DRIVE BELT IDLER ADJUSTMENT Figure 9 Check regularly for correct belt tension, particularly every to 10 hours following installation of new belts. To adjust belt idlers: 1. Remove main belt guard.. Loosen idler clamping bolt.. Adjust idler to allow. to 9. lb tension at 1/ (1 mm) deflection.. Replace main belt guard. SERVICE & ADJUSTMENTS LIFT CHAIN ADJUSTMENT UNITS # & # The outer lift chains on Verticutter units # and # provide adjustment of the nylon rollers in the stops and lift operation. If the # and # Verticutter units do not engage the stop ramps properly when lifting, adjust as follows: 1. Lower Verticutter units to the ground. Loosen the nut on the chain-adjusting rod and back off the nut several turns.. Remove the clevis pin from the adjusting yoke.. Turn the adjusting yoke towards the nut to increase the lift and decrease the roller clearance in the stop.. Replace the yoke and clevis pin, making sure that the chain is not twisted.. Lift the Verticutter units into place to confirm that adjustment is correct. Adjustment is correct when there is slight tension on the lift chain and the nylon rollers are tight in the stop.. When adjustment is correct, tighten the adjusting rod locking nut and ensure that the cotter pin is secure. VERTICUTTER UNIT TIE ROD ADJUSTMENT CHECK Annually check the alignment of mowing units #, 1 and. See Annual Inspection on page 11. VERTICUTTER UNIT DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT To replace Verticutter unit drive belt: 1. Place Verticutter unit in mowing position.. Using the wrench provided, loosen the 1" jam nut (on the spring) until the belt is loose.. Remove the bolts holding the safety chain and shield in place.. Slip belt off reel pulley WARNING: Telescoping arm is heavily sprung. Extreme care must be taken to avoid personal injury. Figure 9. Remove / bolt from telescoping arm end and guard.. To remove belt from center Verticutter units, it is necessary to remove all belts from the jackshaft pulleys and then the jackshaft coupling assembly. The belts can then be pulled through the gap between the jackshafts. IMPORTANT: Do not place tension on the jackshaft belts or pulleys until the jackshaft coupling is reinstalled. Damage to the jackshafts will result. GB 1

. Place the new belt around the jackshaft pulley, making sure that it goes to the right of a right-side telescoping arm or to the left of a left-side telescoping arm.. Replace the / bolt through the guard, telescoping arm and frame. 9. Replace the small bolt through the upper flange of the guard. 10. Slip the belt on the reel pulley and retighten the 1" nut until the spring is compressed to " to -1/" in length. 11. Reinstall the pulley guard and safety chain. Detach and store Verticutter in an area where children normally do not play. Attach rear lift arm transport chain between rear lift arms.
