Background The Aircraft Carrier Alliance is a partnership between Babcock, Thales UK, BAE Systems and the MOD which is responsible for delivering the Royal Navy s new aircraft carriers. Pipex px is one of the worlds leading suppliers of glass Reinforced epoxy (GRE) pipes and fittings. With global engineering support, field service expertise and large UK stock, Pipex px are able to provide flexible design, fabrication and installation solutions to clients worldwide. Pipex px has been awarded by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance the prestigious contract for the supply of GRE pipes and fittings on the first of class aircraft carrier, the Queen Elizabeth. An innovative alliance approach known as the Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA) will deliver the two carriers. The alliance was adopted to create common project objectives between all its members, with rewards for project wide results rather than individual advantages. For the fabrication phase of the project, the Aircraft Carrier Alliance is formed by Babcock, Thales UK, BAE Systems Marine (representing BAE Submarine Solutions and Insyste divisions) and the MOD (which acts as both partner and client.) The Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carriers Will provide four acres of sovereign territory Will form the most visible and potent demonstration of maritime power Will be the largest warships ever built in the UK The vessels will displace 65,000 tonnes, 280M long by 70M wide and 9 decks deep with a flight deck capable of carrying 36 f-35 Joint Strike Fighters plus EH 101 Merlin helicopters The vessels will have a speed of 25+ knots, a range of 8,000-10,000 miles and will carry a crew of 1,450 (including air crew) The designing and building of the ships is expected to create and sustain thousands of jobs across the UK The aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales are being delivered by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, a unique partnering relationship between BAE Systems, Thales UK, Babcock and the UK Ministry of Defence
Pipex px and the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers Pipex px will be working on the carriers for up to five years with an estimated completion date of 2016. The Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers project teams based at Portsmouth and Clyde have reported that the project is on schedule. The contract underpins the continual employment of Pipex px current 126 strong workforce. Pipex px are on contract to fabricate and supply over 2000 No. GRE pipe spools for the chilled water distribution system supply and return, waste heat hot water, ballast system and sea water cooling. Up to October 2010 Pipex px has fabricated and supplied 750 No. spools and delivered 580 No. spools to BAE Systems Surface Ship at Govan and Portsmouth. In addition Pipex px have also provided site installation of GRE spools working alongside BAE system pipe engineers. Pipex px have also supplied our innovative Bulkhead Penetration trims, 2 No. 700mmø, 1 No. 500mmø, 1 No. 600mmø providing a solution to ensure that watertight integrity and fire resistance is maintained when a GRE pipe penetrates a watertight bulkhead, by encasing the GRE pipe in a steel sleeve.
