Multi e.dot+ Gun 1 Safety Instructions Read this section before starting up the unit. This section contains recommendations and common procedures for safe installation, operation and maintenance (hereafter referred to as Use) of the product described in this document (hereafter referred to as Unit). Additional safety instructions appear throughout the manual as warnings regarding specific application steps. WARNING: Risk of burns! Do not remove the nozzle when the system is pressurized. If the nozzle is removed while the system is pressurized, adhesive can flow freely from the gun. Relieve the system of pressure before detaching the nozzle. Failure to relieve pressure can lead to injury. WARNING: Failure to observe the safety notes, recommendations and instructions on how to avoid danger may result in personal injury, death and/or damage to equipment and property. Safety Symbols The following safety symbols and signal words are used in all of the documentation to warn of potential danger and to make the operator aware of conditions that may lead to equipment or property damage. All safety notes preceded by the signal words WARNING and CAUTION must be followed. WARNING: Indicates a potential hazard that can cause serious injury or death upon failure to observe. CAUTION: Indicates a potential hazard that can cause minor or moderate injury upon failure to observe. WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Failure to observe may result in personal injury, death, or equipment damage.

2 Multi e.dot+ Gun Responsibility of the Unit Owners The owners of the equipment are responsible for the implementation of all safety information. They must ensure that all instructions and implementation specifications regarding use of the unit are complied with and that all potential operators are sufficiently qualified. Safety Information Obtain and interpret the safety information from all available sources, including owner-specific safety concepts, common practice in the industry, applicable regulations, product information from the material manufacturer and this document. Make the safety information available to the equipment operators in compliance with the valid regulations. Please consult the government agencies responsible. Safety instructions, including the safety labels affixed to the equipment, must be clearly legible. Instructions, Requirements and Guidelines Ensure that the units are uses in compliance with the information included in this document, relevant laws and requirements as well as common industry practice. Before initial installation or startup of the equipment, seek approval from the department Industrial and Building Systems, the Safety department or a department with equivalent responsibility. Ensure that emergency and first aid equipment are easily accessible. Perform safety inspections to confirm that the required procedures are being followed. Check and reevaluate safety practices and precautions when procedures or equipment change.

Receive safety training specific to their tasks, as required for compliance with valid regulations and common industry practice Are familiar with the owner's regulations and measures regarding safety and accident prevention Receive from qualified personnel training that applies specifically to their tasks and the equipment they will be operating NOTE: Nordson offers unit-specific training for installation, operation and maintenance. Please contact your Nordson representative for information. Have functional experience as well as skills specific to the industry and branch Are physically able to perform their assigned tasks, and that they are not under the influence of substances that restrict their mental or physical capabilities. Safety Measures to be Applied in the Industry The following safety measures apply to the intended use of the units described in this document. The information stated here cannot cover all possible safety measures. However, it represents the best-suited information for the equipment in similar branches of industry and with comparable potential hazard. Intended Use of Units The units may be used only for the purpose described here and only within the area specified in this document. The units may not be adapted or modified in any way. Unsuitable or incompatible materials or untested accessories may not be used. Please consult your Nordson representative for questions regarding material compatibility or use of accessories that are not standard. Instructions and Safety Notes Carefully read and follow the instructions contained in this document and in reference documents. Become familiar with the placement and meaning of safety labels affixed to the equipment. Refer to Safety Labels and Tags (if included) at the end of this section. Please consult your Nordson representative if you are unsure of how to use the unit.

4 Multi e.dot+ Gun Installation Operation Install the unit by following the instructions in this document; install additional accessories as described in the included documentation. Ensure that the degree of protection is suitable for the intended installation location and that material processing does not pose any risks in the surrounding areas. Refer to the material safety data sheet (MSDS) for information on the material. Please consult your Nordson representative if the required equipment configuration does not correspond to the installation instructions. Set up the equipment such that it can operated safely. Allow sufficient clearance between units and other objects. Install lockable switches to be able to disconnect the unit and independently connected accessories from the power supply. Properly ground all equipment. Consult the responsible building authority for special requirements when necessary. Verify that circuit breakers of the right type and specified value are installed in fuse-protected units. Consult the proper government agency when installation permits or inspections are required. The operator must be familiar with the location and operation of all safety devices and display equipment. Verify that all of the equipment and all of the safety devices (protective mechanisms, safety switches, etc.) are in good operating condition and that all requirements have been met at the setup location. Wear the specified personal protective equipment (PPE) for the respective tasks. Refer to Information on Equipment Safety and to the instructions from the material manufacturer as well to the MSDS for the PPE requirements. Units that do not function properly and equipment that indicates potential malfunction may not be used.

Multi e.dot+ Gun 5 Maintenance and Repair Perform maintenance at the intervals stated in this document. Relieve adhesive/material and pneumatic pressure in the system before beginning maintenance work. Disconnect the unit and accessories from the power supply before beginning maintenance work. Use only new parts or refurbished parts approved by the manufacturer. Before cleaning the unit, carefully read and follow the manufacturer's instructions as well as the MSDS for the cleaning agent. NOTE: The MSDS for the cleaning agents available through Nordson can be obtained at www.nordson.com or can be requested by phone from your Nordson representative. Check that all safety devices function properly before restarting the equipment. Properly dispose of remaining cleaning agents as well as working and processing materials according to local regulations. Refer to the respective MSDS or consult the responsible government agency. Keep the safety labels on the equipment clean. Damaged or worn labels must be replaced by new ones. Information on Equipment Safety The following information on equipment safety applies to the following Nordson units: Units that apply hot melt adhesives and units that apply cold glue, as well as all related accessories Pattern controllers, timers, compiling and monitoring systems as well as other optional process controllers. Unit Shutdown To be able to safely and reliably perform many of the processes described in this document, the unit must first be switched off. The degree to which the equipment must be switched off depends on the unit used and the respective process. When required, the shutdown instructions are specified at the beginning of the process. The shutdown levels are: Relieving System of Adhesive Pressure Completely relieve system of pressure before detaching a hydraulic connection or seal. Instructions on relieving the system of hydraulic pressure can be found in the respective melter manual.

6 Multi e.dot+ Gun Disconnecting System from Power Supply Before accessing unprotected wiring or connections, disconnect the system (melter, hoses, guns and optional accessories) from all voltage sources. 1. Switch off units and connected accessories. 2. Lock and label isolators and circuit breakers that energize units and optional accessories, so that nothing can be switched on unintentionally. NOTE: Government regulations and industrial standards specify certain requirements to isolate hazardous energy sources. Refer to the respective requirement or standard. Deactivating Guns All electrical or mechanical devices that transmit an activation signal to guns, their solenoid valves or the melter pump must be deactivated before any work can be performed on a pressurized gun or within its effective range. 3. Switch off the gun controller or disconnect it from the power supply (pattern controller, timer, PLC, etc.). 4. Detach the input signal cable from the solenoid valve(s) or detach the gun power cable (electrical guns). 5. Set the air pressure to the solenoid valve(s) to zero and relieve the remaining air pressure between the pressure controller and the gun. General Safety Instructions: WARNING and CAUTION Table 1 contains the general safety indications (WARNING and CAUTION) for Nordson melters and cold glue guns. Study the table and carefully read all of the warnings and precautions that are relevant to the equipment described in this manual. The units types are designated as follows in table 1: HM = Hot melt (melters, hoses, guns, etc.) PC = Process control CA = Cold adhesive (distributor pumps, pressure containers and guns)

Multi e.dot+ Gun 7 Unit type HM Tab. 1 General Safety Instructions: WARNING and CAUTION Warning or caution WARNING: Hazardous vapors! Before processing reactive polyurethane hot melt adhesive (PUR) or material containing solvents in a suitable Nordson melter, carefully read the MSDS and comply with it. Ensure that the material processing temperature and flash point are not exceeded and that all requirements pertaining to handling, ventilation, first aid and protective equipment are met. Failure to observe the instructions in the MSDS can cause injury or death. HM WARNING: Reactive material! Never use halogenated hydrocarbon solutions to clean components made of aluminum or to purge Nordson units. Nordson melters and guns contain components made of aluminum that may react severely with halogenated hydrocarbons. The use of halogenated hydrocarbon solutions in Nordson units can cause injury or death. HM, CA WARNING: System pressurized! Relieve system of pressure before detaching a hydraulic connection or seal. Failure to observe can allow pressurized adhesive or cold glue to escape and cause personal injury. HM WARNING: Melted material! When performing maintenance on equipment with melted adhesive, wear eye and face protection as well as heat-protective gloves and clothing to protect exposed skin. Hot melt adhesive can cause burns even when it is still hard. Without appropriate protective equipment, injury can result. Continued...

Unit type HM, PC Warning or caution WARNING: Unit starts automatically! External controllers are used to control automatic hot melt guns. Before working on or near a running gun, deactivate the gun trigger and stop the compressed air supply to the solenoid valve(s). Failure to observe may result in injury. HM, CA, PC WARNING: Risk of electrical shock! Even after the unit is switched off and disconnected from the power supply with isolators or circuit breakers, it may still be connected to accessories that are energized. Disconnect all auxiliary equipment from the power supply before beginning maintenance. Failure to properly disconnect auxiliary devices from the power supply can lead to injury or death. CA WARNING: Risk of explosion or fire! Nordson units that process cold glue may not be used in potentially explosive surroundings, and they may not be used to apply solvent-based adhesives that can generate explosive fumes during processing. Refer to the safety data sheet (MSDS) pertaining to the adhesive for information on processing properties and restrictions. Use of incompatible or solvent-containing adhesives or incorrect processing of adhesives containing solvent can cause injury or death. HM, CA, PC WARNING: Only trained, experienced personnel should operate the equipment and perform maintenance. When inexperienced personnel or persons without adequate training operate the unit or perform maintenance, injury, death or equipment damage can occur. Continued...

Multi e.dot+ Gun 9 Unit type HM Warning or caution CAUTION: Hot surfaces! Avoid touching hot surfaces of guns, hoses and some melter components. If contact cannot be avoided, wear heat-protective gloves and clothing when working on hot equipment. Failure to comply with the instructions to avoid hot surfaces can result in injury. HM CAUTION: Some Nordson melters are designed especially for processing reactive polyurethane hot melt adhesive (PUR). When an attempt is made to process PUR in a unit not intended for this material, the melter may sustain damage and the adhesive can harden prematurely. Please consult your Nordson representative if you are unsure of whether your unit can process PUR. HM, CA CAUTION: Before using cleaning or purging agent on or in the unit, carefully read and follow the manufacturer's instructions and the MSDS for the agent. Some cleaning agents may react with hot melt adhesive or cold glue in unexpected ways and cause equipment damage. HM CAUTION: Nordson melters are tested with a type R cleaning agent, which contains polyester adipate plasticizer. Some types of hot melt adhesive may react with type R cleaning agents and form a solid rubber, which then clogs the melter. Before use, verify that the hot melt adhesive is compatible with type R cleaning agents. Other Safety Precautions Do not use an open flame to heat hot melt system components. Check high-pressure hoses daily for excessive wear, damage or leakage. Do not direct the assembly handgun towards any persons. Always hang the assembly handgun in the bracket intended for this purpose.

Immediately submerge the affected skin in clean, cold water until the adhesive has cooled. 3. DO NOT ATTEMPT to remove the hardened adhesive from the skin. 4. Initiate shock treatment if burns are severe. 5. Immediately consult a qualified physician. Show the MSDS for the adhesive to the medical personnel treating the patient.

Multi e.dot+ Gun 11 Description The Multi e.dot+ gun is a compact, non-contact, high-speed precision applicator for applications requiring small dots of adhesive. The terms (hot melt) adhesive and glue, as well as compound words containing the terms, are used interchangeably in this document. 16 Multi e.dot+ Gun Operation The Multi e.dot+ gun is now ready for operation. Stroke Adjustment The Multi e.dot+ gun is equipped with a graduated dial for stroke adjustment. The stroke has been set to 0.15 mm at the factory. It is not necessary to modify the gun stroke under normal operating conditions. The stroke need only be adjusted after the gun is disassembled. If the nozzle is removed while the system is pressurized, adhesive can flow freely from the gun. Relieve the system of pressure before detaching the nozzle. Failure to relieve pressure can lead to injury. WARNING: Risk of injury. These units contain pressurized hot melt adhesive and high voltage circuits. Before performing any troubleshooting measures, read the section Safety in this manual. Failure to observe the safety instructions and accident prevention procedures can cause injury or death. 22 Multi e.dot+ Gun Cleaning Components WARNING: Risk of fire. Do not heat Nordson cleaning agent Type R over 245 C (475 F). Use only a commercial controlled electrical heater intended for heating industrial fluids. Heating Nordson cleaning agent type R over an open flame or in a non-controlled heater can lead to personal injury or property damage. 1. Soak the components in Nordson cleaning agent type R, heated to warmer than the adhesive melting point. 2. Remove the components from the cleaning agent and wipe thoroughly with a soft cloth to remove all foreign matter. CAUTION: Use a precision cleaning pin of the correct size to clean Nordson nozzles. If a pin other than a precision pin or a pin of the wrong size is used, the nozzle may be damaged. The Nordson nozzle cleaning set (P/N 901915) contains various cleaning pin sizes. 3. Insert a cleaning pin of the proper size into the nozzle outlet. 4. Grasp the cleaning pin with a clean cloth, then extract the needle from the nozzle; wipe the needle clean. 5. Clean the armature and the spring. 6. Check all components for damage or excessive wear. Replace if necessary. Refer to Parts, Gun service kits. When the nozzle or armature needs to be replaced, Nordson recommends replacing all three components (nozzle, armature and spring).

NOTE: Dispose of the old filter. Filters cannot be cleaned and reused. 4. Apply Never-Seez mounting paste to the thread of the new filter. 5. Insert the new filter (1) and tighten with 1.35-2.71 Nm (1 2 ft-lb).
