1.Description RoughScan is a portable, battery-powered, micro processed instrument for checking surface roughness with digital readout on LCD. RoughScan can be widely used in laboratory, inspection area in the shop, or wherever on-suit surface roughness testing is required. RoughScan roughness tester standard package includes: - RoughScan basic unit - Standard probe - A precision specimen - Calibration plate - 9-volt alkaline battery 2.Technical Specifications Display : LCD Measuring range : Ra (ISO): 0.05μm 5.0μm / 2μ 200μ Ry(ISO), Rz(DIN) : 0.2μm 25.0μm / 8μ 999μ Resolution : 0.01um / 1μ Accuracy : ±10% conform ISO Class 2 Uncertainty : 2% Cut-off (λ) : 0.8mm /.030μ, ANSI 2RC Filter Traverse lengths and Evaluation lengths : Traverse Evaluation Switch position length length 1.2mm 0.8mm 1 3.0mm 2.4mm 3 4.5mm 4.0mm 5 Power : 9-volt alkaline battery Stylus type : piezo-electric 3.RoughScan Layout 4.Battery Installation / Replacement 4.1 Remove battery compartment cover. Install / replace battery and replace the compartment cover. 4.2 Set power switch to on position, the LCD will display 1-000. 4.3 Press the start button. If LCD displays 8-888, indicating battery weak which requires to replace the battery. 5.Probe Installation 5.1 Swivel the probe mounting block to its 180 position. 5.2 Grasp the probe by its body section, carefully insert the probe into probe mounting block (the pin in probe mounting block should be inserted into the bore at the end of the probe). 5.3 Tighten the knurled locking collar. Note : Please make sure that the probe stylus will be perpendicular to the surface of work piece 5.4 Reverse the procedure to withdraw the probe Manual 3 / 5
6.Calibration Prior to operate the tester, the calibration should be checked. 6.1 RoughScan tester is calibrated by using the Reference Specimen. Set the traverse length switch to position 5, and set the metric/inch switch to metric. Put the precision standard specimen into the groove of the calibration plate, then place the tester in the calibration plate. Make sure that the probe stylus is in the middle of specimen. Take a reading from the center of specimen. If the test reading would be within ±5% (±0.02μm) of the precision standard value stated on the report of calibration certificate, the calibration result is within tolerance.if the test reading differs from the precision standard value stated on the report of calibration certificate by more than ±5%μm, please take one more tests. If the readings still differ by more than allowable tolerance, recalibrate the tester following the procedure below Please note : the value marked on specimen is only a Class-level value not real roughness value. The actual measuring value may be 0.3 0.4μm around class-level value. 6.2 Using a jeweler s screwdriver, carefully adjust the calibration control. Clockwise to increase the test reading Ra value, or Counter clockwise to decrease the test reading Ra value. 6.3 After adjust the calibration control, repeat take testing on precision standard specimen to assure that the tester in within allowable tolerance. 7. RoughScan tester can be operated in any one of four probe position : 0, 90, 180, 270. Normally, in 0 position, the tester can measure flat surface or cylindrical surface. In 90 position or 270 position, the tester can measure surfaces such as crankshaft pins and journals that can not be measured with the probe in its 0 position or 180 position In 180 position, the tester can measure flat, cylindrical and bore inside surface. With the probe positioned on the work piece surface to be measured, carefully adjust the tester and work piece set up, so that the reference line on the probe mounting block is parallel to the bottom of the tester housing andparallel to the work piece surface. This ensures that the probe skid and stylus are flush on the surface ever though the probe body will be at an angle to the surface. Manual 4 / 5
8.Protection And Storage RoughScan is a precision instrument which should be treated with care to assure measurement accuracy and reliable performance. To protect the RoughScan tester when it not in use, always withdraw the probe, and keep the tester and its accessories in the fitted carrying case. 9.Measuring parameters Ra - Roughness Average - the arithmetic average height of roughness irregularities measured from a mean line with the evaluation length (L) Rz Mean Roughness Depth (per DIN) also known as Rtm the mean of 5 maximum peak-to-valley roughness depths in 5 successive sampling lengths. Ry The maximum Roughness Depth in one cut-off. 10.Part List 1 Digital Display 2 Start key 3 Parameter selection 4 Cut-off selection 5 Micron / micro inch 6 On / off key 8 Battery housing 9 Probe housing 10 V anvil 11 Test block 12 Probe Manual 5 / 5
