SCOPE OF THE PROJECT EBS.. Now EBS Energy (GeV) 6.04 6 Multibunch current (ma) 200 200 Circumference (m) 844.39 843.98 Horizontal emittance (pm.rad) 4000 140 Vertical emittance (pm.rad) 4 5 - Is going to be the new photon source (6 GeV electron storage ring) of the ESRF. The brilliance of the generated X-Rays will improve by factors due to the reduced horizontal e-beam emittance. - Will contain 7 dipoles per cell (today 2), 7 x 32 = 224 dipole magnets - Will replace the existing machine in the same tunnel - Will be pre-assembled prior to installation which starts in Jan 2019 - Will contain 128 + 1 girders for magnets, vacuum chambers, etc. - Will be an in-situ bakeable machine - Will mainly use lumped (discrete) UHV pumping rather than functional coatings - Will consist of stainless steel and aluminum vacuum chambers and use conventional flanges Page 4 3 rd rencontres vide cnrs 10 13 October 2016

PREPUMPING FOR ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION Traditional pumping groups with Hybrid turbomolecular pump, membrane pump, gauge controller, PLC, etc. too space demanding for EBS machine because of space constraints. This is also to comply with safety standards and European legislation (CE conformity). A more compact pumping concept had to be found.. Page 16 3 rd rencontres vide cnrs 10 13 October 2016
PREPUMPING FOR ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION 6 turbomolecular pumps attached to pre-pumping valves of each vacuum sector. Backed by a dry pump. Isolation valve in the exhaust which closes when rotation speed of turbo gets low, operated by Turbo controller. A trolley will transport controllers, turbos, ACP etc., materials to be installed on cable trays to keep the walkway free. Page 17 3 rd rencontres vide cnrs 10 13 October 2016

ID14 TEST OF KEY COMPONENTS EBS Prototypes installed in a 6m ID straight section of ESRF: - Straight aluminum chamber following EBS dipole chamber production principle(1) - Bellow chamber containing two low profile RF liner assemblies(2) - All metal pneumatic RF gate valve prototype(3) - 1800mm NEG coated ESRF extruded Al ID chamber to fill up full length of SS (4) 3 1 2 4 Page 19 3 rd rencontres vide cnrs 10 13 October 2016
PROBLEMS AND LESSONS LEARNED FROM ID14 TEST IN AUGUST 2016 - Full aluminum flanges can create problems outside lab environment - Co-incidence of vacuum and RF gaskets on the flanges complicates flange assembly - With the same fixation hole pattern, RF gaskets for low and high profile chambers could be confused - Crossing welding seams on aluminum chambers produced from two plates can create problems - Given the amount of issues identified on this small test assembly, it becomes obvious that the mockup construction is very important Aluminum prototype chamber on ID14 View from below, with leaking CF100 aluminum flange (IP) Page 20 3 rd rencontres vide cnrs 10 13 October 2016
CONCLUSION Contracts for the custom-shaped series production items (standard cell chambers, valves,.. ) have been placed; Design and procurement for one-of-a-kind items (injection and diagnostic chambers, straight section adaptation,..) is ongoing; Procurement of vacuum instrumentation (UHV pumps, gauges, controllers,..) close to completion; Still a lot of work for consumables ( screws, gaskets, heating collars and connectors, thermal insulation,..) ahead; Page 21 3 rd rencontres vide cnrs 10 13 October 2016
